I have a 2020 Tundra with a TRD factory Skid plate. Toyota did the first two oil changes. I like to learn how to do it myself.

I went to YouTube and found this: 2014-2020 Toyota Tundra 5.7L V8 Oil Change Step-by-Step How-To - YouTube

Question: To keep your warranty in effect, do you save your receipts?

BTW: How many Quarts will I need? I took my owners manual out of the truck and put it in a safe place. So safe, I can't find it.

Yes, save all receipts. Buy the correct oil and since most brands come in 5 qt jugs, by two jugs. Sooner or later you'll have enough left over that buying a few single qts will be enough.

7.9Q of 0w-20 5w-20 or 5w-30. All are acceptable weights for your engine! You can read many hours forums about which one is better! You pick what you think best suits you.

The owners manual states to use 0w-20 oil nothing else. In case of emergency other can be used but needs to be changed back to 0w-20 asap.

In my experience the sale recepit will list the weight of the oil bought, that said if warranty work was needed they could see that you used improper oil and could deny coverage.

    Just saying.

I just did an oil change on my 5.7 liter yesterday. And as it has in the past (I'm at 90,000 miles) it takes 8.4 quarts of oil to get to the top of the dip stick range (after filling and running the engine for a few minutes, then letting it settle for 10 minutes min.).

OP, if you want to consider making your Tunda engine oil change life easier then look into getting a Fumoto oil drain valve to replace oil drain plug with. https://www.fumotousa.com/all-products.html

Not necessary to save receipts. I just keep a log of the maintenance I do, for my own record. I have never read a story about a dealer asking an owner to produce receipts for oil in order to perform a warranty claim.

8.5 quarts is what you'll use. The Tundra oil change is a little more involved with it's oil filter choice, but it's not too complicated. The Motive X makes thing a lot less messy.

This. There would really be no point. Just because you can show a receipt for oil doesn't prove to the dealer that that oil was used in that vehicle.

MotivX seems to be out of the funnel currently, but they have the wrench and drain tool available.

As stated in other forums, the manual and oil cap say that because of US government requirements.

The docs for the same engine in other countries lists other weights.

However, in the interest of warranty coverage, it's probably best to stick with 0-20.

I'm using 5-30 in my '15 because of the summer heat here in southern AZ.

You can find a PDF version of your manual on the toyota website. You'll see it's probably state 7.9qt with oil filter. I did 7.9 for a while, then had enough of bottles sitting around with 0.1 in it. So now I just put in 8.

Others state put in 8.5 to keep the dip stick happy.

If you ask Toyota nicely through their website they may send you a new printed manual. They did for me!!

    None....
I keep the receipts and do a log of each oil change. I also take pics of the whole change while I'm doing it. I want to make sure they can't deny warranty coverage.

I honestly think a long and receipts would be enough proof.

-8.5qts of 0w-20. People will recommend 7.9qts, but this is incorrect for a 2020. Your manual will corroborate.
-Good filter tool. TOY640 is excellent, US made, and not expensive. https://www.amazon.com/Assenmacher-Specialty-Tools-TOY-640/dp/B0015PK3AG
-Toyota 04152YZZA4 filter kit pay attention to how the housing gaskets fit.
You will need a 24mm socket to use the above tool. You will also want a torque wrench.
OEM drain plug fiber washer. Old school parts guys will give you one with the filter free.

Filter housing drain cap- 10 ft/lbs
    Filter housing- 18 ft/lbs
    Drain plug- 27-28 ft/lbs

Oil changes on these are very easy and everything is accessible. The worst part is the stupid skid plate hangers.

EDIT: Get a carfax account and update your oil changes there. You can even upload your receipts. This way it will keep the carfax record good.

The first thing local service managers here will do is pull the carfax when you state something is up. They will give you crap right away if it does not show oil changes. They do not care what your logbook says.

I “log” my oil changes in the Toyota app. All the dealer performed maintenance is logged in there from prior to me buying the truck. I take a picture of the oil and filter I used and have it in a folder on my phone. Carfax is is not the Bible. It, like all sources of information, is only as good as the record keeper reporting to it. Lots of missing info on a Carfax. And I wouldn’t call oil changes on these trucks easy. They are actually kind of a pain in the ass. My wife’s Jeep GC is easy. One drain plug, filter sits in a canister on top of the engine. No skid plate, no draining mess.

There’s really no way of proving any oil changes were done. Receipts of purchased oil/filter is only proof it was purchased. Your personal logbook in your center compartment isn’t any different than logs in carfax. It’s essentially the honor system. Toyota would have to somehow find proof that the oil change or lack thereof caused whatever issue would be present.

change your oil at your chosen interval and be happy driving your truck :burnrubber:

The right filter housing drain tool, the right filter housing socket, and that fancy funnel all are excellent recommendations. After dumping my oil one time, I installed a Fumoto valve. Makes such a difference…

    I bought everything on Amazon.

I also bought an aluminum filter housing through my dealer. It’s not “for” a Tundra, and has a shorter tube in the center. Takes about 11 seconds to swap tubes, and then it’s a perfect fit. The part number for the housing is circulation here somewhere, but I think it was for a Sienna van, if all things. I could be wrong though!!!

My ‘18 takes 8.5 quarts. Earlier years called for 7.9 even in the same 5.7L. I just buy two 5-qt jugs of full synthetic 0-20 and do it. I dump one jug and then pour 1.5 into the empty. Dump the other 3.5 in motor.

Buy the oil wherever has it on sale. Any good 0-20 synthetic is fine…. Buy the filter elements straight from Toyota dealer parts guys. I think I pay just a hair over $5 per. Tell them to keep that plug washer because you have a Fumoto…

Only way to make it easier it to get a skid plate with a filter housing door…

I quit watching that idiot after a short while. Did he finally make a point of why the plastic housing is superior on a Tundra, but aluminum one of identical dimension is a better choice for other motors?

I did not have my plastic housing break, despite numerous Toyota oil change “tech’s” doing their best to torque it till it spins freely. Since I’ve taken the reigns on my own maintenance, I’ve had good luck with the aluminum. I tighten till it stops turning and then just a tad of tension. It’s an o-ring seal. Doesn’t need to be horsed on there!!!

No, he did not say one is superior to the other as long as its the correct OEM part. He explained that the tube and spring which is your by pass valve is engineered to release at a certain pressure and by messing with it you could potentially not be getting oil to the engine when you need it or bypassing when it should be filtering. Feel free to watch it and deduct your own reasoning, I dont always agree with everything he says but with this one, its a known fact that the plastic housing has no issues when its not over tightened.

Gotcha. I did keep my original guts out of the housing and transferred them to the aluminum. Didn’t think about seeing if the springs were of the same rate, but they looked close. Tubes definitely need swapped in order to fit the filter correctly and support the inside.

To be honest, I cannot believe that the plastic one was still on one piece after seeing how tight the LOF guys were putting it on! 3 Ugga Duggas to remove…

Last 2 changes have been 8.5 quarts with a filter change.
I buy whatever oil is on sale but always buy the oil filter at the dealer so there is a record. Also log everything.
Also use the motiv x filter drain tool and funnel but have the Volvo Max drain plug system. IMO it's the best. So clean and easy.

The funnel is the least needed part of the kit. It is nice that it threads into the oil fill tube, but any funnel works.

In general I agree with this statement, but for me, it's pretty helpful when using 5 qt jugs to have a funnel that doesn't move when you're pouring. There are cheaper alternatives that are stationary, but I like that I can swap out the bottom of the MotivX and it'll fit the Hondas in our family (plus there's an adapter to fit our Sienna which isn't threaded).

Also it is important to make sure the filter housing wrench is oriented properly on the housing. There are external ribs that need to register with the slots on the wrench. I didn't realize this on my first two oil changes but was careful on subsequent changes.

Also, the housing can be very difficult to remove if the O-ring is not lubricated during the previous oil change. Found this out the hard way also.

I put 7.5qt in mine and it's right in the middle of the dipstick range (yes, with filter and complete drain)... and 5k miles later it's still there.

im confused as well. I put 8 quarts in mine and it’s at the top tit on the dipstick. Surely 8.5 would be overfilled.

My 2020 owners manual. As others have pointed out, the amount of oil has changed through the years.
