MX4 owners: For what it's worth.
Maybe Toyota cheaped out on hardware?

Dealer confirmed for me , factory took it off build and it’s still being built.

I much prefer that, I can get whatever cover I want now, so that’s actually nice

I would have preferred that, too. I just bought my truck 6 weeks too soon, I suppose. I am going to give it a shot with Toyota to see if I can get a refund for it and then just buy what I want.

My passenger side one was loose, two good turns on it. Driver side was tight AF So on a good note it just would of flown into the oncoming lane versus the sidewalk LOL

Should I take mine off before I goto the dealer for service, are they going to take it if it’s on?

Anyone still have a good discount on the Bakflip at this point if it's truly not included in the recall of the OEM one?

The crazy things about that are (1) They never say what the problem is, and (2) There is a double standard in how they handle them... removing and DESTROYING the ones on new trucks, but making owners who already have them keep them but remove them until there is a "fix" for an as yet undisclosed problem. Not getting a warm fuzzy here...

Do we believe this? Would it really be true that a Toyota accessory MX4 be different than a BackFlip MX4? I suppose it could be, but seems unlikely that Toyota would mess with something like this. IMHO

I hated my Roll n' Lock. Stupid thing would roll up while wailing down the highway in the pouring rain leaving the cargo exposed. Never again would I buy one

I think is it more like the F1 than the MX4, everyone keeps saying it's an MX 4, but if you look at the back corners:

My understanding was the OEM cover is a mix between G2 and MX4 components.

My guess is it's the MX4 with some of the less expensive finishes of the F1 but who knows?

And the most ludicrous thing for us more citified truckers is that our beds with these covers are used more like car trunks. So Toyota telling us to remove them is like telling you to take off the trunk lid on your car for a few months.

Interesting. But I bet the mounting hardware is the same... although we still don't know if that is the problem. I just got up in the bed and had a closer look and all the clamps look fine and all the bolts are tight. So i just don't see this thing coming off on its own. And all that hardware looks exactly the same as what I saw in the MX4 installation video I posted above.

Toyota is trying to put the attention on the cover so we can forget how our interiors sound like gravel in a can.

roll up for access company means its manual. its a soft cover. i've used them on our trucks since our 2012 tacoma. since the company is only like 150 miles away and the primary business is agri covers for farm equipment. ive never had an issue with them and they've been winter tested in our ND winters.

https://www.accesscover.com/original/ this is the cover i use on all our trucks

here is the parent company https://shop.agricover.com/category/agricover

Decent chance this is caused not so much by a defect but by a design that doesn't dummy proof the install against a less detail oriented dealer tech or consumer. Someone probably didn't tighten something enough and a cover blew off so now a failsafe must be designed as extra insurance.

I dunno... install is pretty simple. 4 or 5 clamps on each side bolt the cover rails into the truck's rail system mount points, then the 2 big plastic star nuts that hold the front of the cover to the rails. And remember, the recall requires that dealers and distributors remove and DESTROY the existing covers so they can't sneak out and get reused. Sure sounds like a defect of some sort to me.

Just minor stuff. For example, Undercover bed cover, Tufskinz custom door sill protectors, and TRD air filters.
I’ve been using the Undercover Elite clamshell type one piece cover for years. Had one on my 2001 Silverado, 2016 Tacoma, and now my 2022 Tundra. I can’t open the tailgate without lifting the cover, but I don’t care since that makes the bed more secure. I put a piece on rubber seal around the cover inner edge in case the tailgate is opened in error so it won’t get scratched. Never had ANY kind of problem. Even through a car wash not a drop gets in. Just my two cents of info. No tubes needed in the bed either.

Well its about time! So here is the deal. I purchased the Toyota Tonneau cover from the parts department late last year and installed it myself. I was driving one day on the freeway with it in the UP position an noticed it was lifting off the bed. I checked those knobs and they were snug but not tight. I tightened them down further to the point it was going to bend the bracket. The support braces were also as tight as they could be. Continued driving and it still lifted off the bed. You can make it lift off when stopped just by pushing it away from the back window as the wind would do. I took pics and went to the dealer. They were unwilling to help because I installed it. I also contacted Bakflip who did confirm they build them for Toyota and it is the same as their 448440. They never called me back once I sent my pics! Now I know why. If you have one put it in the up position and see if you have the same problem. It is totally fine in the flat position and I've never had a problem. I have not used it in the up position ever since as I've been concerned about it tearing off and hitting someone.

I’d really like to know if other people drive with it in the up position and are fine or not. Is that a one off issue I wonder.

I have the cover and planning to install it, but if I use it like my Tacoma, I’ll want to drive with the cover up fairly often.

That would be great if a few people who have them could check. All you have to do is pull it away from the back window. Note this only happens to me in driving conditions above 65ish or slower if you have a headwind. Around town it is just fine. Mine is PT954-34220-02 which is listed in the recall docs. In my opinion the bolt is mounted too far foward and there just isn't enough bite to hold it down.

Now this is interesting. Look at the difference between this bracket and mine. Mine is not flush almost as if they installed it upside down or on the wrong side. This bracket is pre-fabricated so there is no way I installed it wrong. I wonder if that is the issue?

It’s only going to fly off in the up position without having anything to brace it to the truck like a box full of furniture. The cover is heavy and it did not have any movement up, I did have my tri fold cover on my Tacoma come off this way in the past.

This is the first thing that makes any sense. No way this thing is coming off while it is shut.

Experienced the same issue the first time i used the cover in the up position. No matter how tightly I secured the bolts, the struts, or the clips, the cover is still pushed about by the wind with any kind of mild speed.

Checked the recall site but nothing listed yet.
