PCV Valve Replacement Instructions-4.7L

The foam cover appears to be:
Toyota 12236-50010
Cover, Ventilation Valve

 

The FSM for our 04 calls for 20ftlb and rotate as shown below !

 

Found the foam cover thanks to @w666

The PCV hoses differ between V8 and V6. Had to do some digging to ensure I got the V8 hose and not the V6.

For the record, part numbers for a new V8 PCV hose, hose clamps, and foam cover:

 

I had a feeling that grommet would be a PIA. Had a new PCV installed, the grommet leaks like crazy. Crikey.

 

So let's suppose you find a valve cover from a later generation truck that threads in. Could you just swap valve covers to be rid of the grommet?

 

I don't see why you couldn't if everything lines up.

Another member on here - @txagg ? - went through the "generational valve cover" swap, I think? I'll see if I can dig and find that. It was someone within the last 6 months, around the same time I did my gaskets. If I can find in the next 3-5 mins I'll update this reply.

 

2006 threaded...gunked up but still sounded good. Quick and easy. Let it warm up to go get beer and still a little tough to get loose. Foam was crumbly too but able to put back on.



Sorry, phone decided to focus on the gloved hand...you get the point. Having issues with it connecting to laptop, looked a little more clear on the handheld computer.

I am new here and would like to ask if there are two PCV valves on the 4.7 V8. I see the one which is being discussed but there seems to be another one on the other bank on a 2002 engine which looks like the threaded valve. Any ideas?

There's only one on my 4.7, on the driver's side. I've got the VVTi 4.7 that's in the '05-'06. Can you snap a pic of the PCV you're looking at on your truck's 4.7?

On an 04, it's part of the crankcase ventilation system(PCV) system. Simply another path for blow-by gases to be pumped back into the cylinders for another shot at combustion.

 

Do you know if it's actually valved, or is it just a vent?

 

On my 04, just a vent thru that 90 deg fitting. Not sure why Toyota Engs felt driver side needed an actual PCV unless it was there way thru throttle body to intake

 

Yeah, dunno. I guess I just glanced over it when I did all my gaskets. Mine has it too. Huh. But I'm 90% positive it was just a crankcase vent, not a valve.

 

Replaced mine today.
Pretty tight but do-able.
After removing the hose, I was able to get the closed-end of a 7/8" wrench over the old one to remove it.
Didn't look bad, but since I already bought a new one & it was cheap, I swapped 'em.
It's gotta be my imagination . . . but the truck seems to run a tad better . . . felt a little 'crisper', but I can't see how that could be.

 

I don’t recall seeing any schedule to replace on our trucks but back in the day most maufacturers recommended replacement at 30K IIRC.

Could be partly imagination, partly reality. I swear my Tacoma always drives better - smoother, quieter, more pep - right after an oil change. I'm sure most of it is me knowing it's been taken care of. But I think it really is noticeable when everything inside the engine has fresh, uncontaminated, un-broken-down lubrication.

My new PCV and grommet will be in my hands by the end of today. Another project for the weekend unless I decide to go camping. I've had this thread bookmarked.

 

I don’t notice anything after oil changes on my Tundras but my 2005 Suburban has noticeably less “vortec-tic” when the oil is new.

 

Did this yesterday. Not sure if it had ever been done before, but it was really pretty clean. Replaced it anyway. Gasket is definitely a pain, but I got it out without dropping any bits into the valve cover. If nothing else, I feel better knowing there's a fresh gasket in there that'll take many years to get as hard and brittle as the one I pulled out.

 

On 2002 FSM. Recomends replacement or inspection every 30k I believe.

 

Wow. That feels like way too often. Might be on my every 100k schedule.

 

I just replaced mine on my 2000 AC. Old one didn’t look terrible and rattled when shaken. Rubber grommet was stiff but came out in one piece. Replaced ‘em both since they are cheap and I already had new ones.

 

If you haven’t done it already you may want to get a new hose for the pcv valve. I replaced my valve and the hose was so old and dried out that it split when I disconnected it.

 

Mine too. Ends were completely cracked up. Can't remember if I posted pics on here or not.

I need to go through and replace all my rubber hoses in the engine bay sooner than later, but I've been too damn lazy to look them up.

I feel like @Tundra2 posted a website on here once that shows you the hoses you need by year. I know with our VVTi engines, the hoses are slightly different, if for nothing more than you have the hoses between the SAI solenoids above the passenger valve cover, which link to the SAI valves on the back of the intake.

 

I got quite a shock when that tiny hose piece was over $50!

 

Ventilation hose #2 is NLA for early FGT. I had to improvise to make the later hose fit over the smaller nipple.

 

Fifty-what? This is before the applied 15-25% off seasonal discount (I forget what it was last year), so not even $45 for all of them. It's for '06 also, so price and part number should be identical for your year. #2 is passenger side, #1 is driver side.

Purchased from Lagrange Toyota online, but Serra Toyota of Birmingham's prices were within $10 of this.

I think I was thinking $50 because I bought two at the local dealer. One for my truck and one for the 4Runner which both have the v8 but the hoses were very different

 

Does anyone know if the 05 4.7 is the threaded version?
