Nonsynethic 80w-140 Gear Oil??

Had 5.29 Nitro gears installed with a PowerTrax Grip Pro LSD in the rear. Coming up on the 500mile gear oil swap and am having issues sourcing conventional 80w-140 gear oil (GL-5) and quite frankly don't know much about them to know where to look.

Everything I find online is synthetic or has friction additives. PowerTrax specifically says conventional (nonsynthetic) with no friction modifiers. They also state only 80w-90 but a quick call to them said 80w-140 is fine and their website info is incorrect.

I've got 4 quarts of 80w-140 synthetic for the front, just lacking what I need for the rear. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Thats what I thought as well, but a call to Lucas says it does have friction modifiers in it.

 

Not much out there. I run Valvoline 80w-90 with mine, gear guy said 80w-140 was too thick. Found some really cheap off brand local, but not trying that.

pretty much all gear oil has some type of friction modifier in the additive package. Im thinking you don’t need an LSD additive. I have the lucas in mine with the auburn lsd. I had to add the LSD additive separately because the lucas did not come with it

 

I tow frequently. Running 80w-90 would burn the gear up oil way quicker so I need the heavier weight. I just got 7 qts of Lucas 85w-140 and going to run it in both diffs.

 

Yeah thats what I'm finding. Very few, if any, petrol based basic gear oils left. Gonna run Lucas 85w-140 in both and call it a day. Need the higher temp stuff since I tow.

 

Necro thread but I am getting 5.29s this week with a powertrax grip pro and I had trouble finding a non synthetic without friction modifier as well and am going with either the valvoline in the white bottle or richmond, which is the 2 that powertrax said they use. The richmond part number was RICHGL5 which is double the price of the white bottle valvoline which they said was fine too.

 

For what it's worth, I've got 24k miles with the Lucas stuff and 0 issues everything working as intended.

 

Makes sense, i think the white bottle lucas is pretty much rated the same as the valvoline, just didnt look at it close enough to see if it didnt have the friction modifier.

 

No problem with the Valvoline under very hard use for 2+ years. Reading the reviews on here my experience is different, barks tire turning, and aggressively locks up, really like it. Not sure if running the dino 80w-90 with no additives is responsible though.

Just to throw another brand in, my powertrax/5.29s have had synthetic Amsoil since I got it a year ago and 25k later it works great too my thought was better oil shouldn't hurt anything, worst case the LSD doesn't engage as well but nothing should get hurt.

 

Same here in rear diff the Lucas 85x140 dino, plus Auburn friction modifier, have Nitro 5.29 and Auburn LSD. If not for the Auburn would be running the Nitro 80x140 blend. I've got a ways to catch up to your miles so good to see it's been all good!

 

I know that Auburn says not to use synthetic gear oil, but I’ve been using the nitro 80w-140 for a couple of years with mine and its running fine. I also added a tiny bit of friction modifier last time I changed the oil. I can feel it lock up like when on ice but not around normal turns on dry pavement.

 

Im running the Grip Pro with Revolution 5.29 gears wanting to upgrade the oil ive been using with
is the O'Reilys brand mastercraft 80w-90 non-synthetic, and i run the piss out of my truck,
so what im getting from this thread is to run 85w-140 non synthetic on both front and rear?
or am i wrong haha

 

Yeah if you tow or depending on your climate. I saw your other tag but I'll keep the response here. 85w-140 Lucas nonsynthetic (dino) gear oil. Just rolled 40k on the truck...0 issues and LSD still working as intended. Tow a bit less than I used to but it's fine.

Yup I just ran the same in both. You'll have to swap it more frequently because it's not synthetic but that's ok.
