Rear diff shavings found at fluid change

There seems to be a pretty huge range when it comes to deposits and miles. I'm shocked at some of the guys waiting 30 or 40k miles to change the diff fluid only because mine was black as the devils heart at 20k miles. Granted it was the first change and I offroad and drive heavy alot of the time. There was only one minor chunk but a decent amount of "fur". I plan on doing it again in 20k miles just to guage if it was only that black because it was the break in oil or if it's normal for my usage.

 

I did my first at 10 and second at 40, the first one at 10 was definitely the worse of the two. I'd say getting that break in oil out as soon as you can is the way to go and then you can go 20-30k after that. I'll probably be sticking with 20k myself.

 

Yes be wise, put the appropriate fluid in according to the manufacturer.
In the Tundra transfer case an example of the appropriate fluid is Royal Purple Sychromax.

Look at the lubricant cross reference chart and find genuine Toyota LF fluid. Which happens to be what is in the Tundras transfer case.

 

If it works, it works, many have had luck with using 75w90, many have used Ravenol, I used the Toyota fluid myself. VOA of the Synchromax vs the Toyota fluid, its definitely not the same but like I said, if it works, go for it.

Yeah I'm expecting the next one at 40k to be much cleaner.

 

Synchromax's claim to fame is that it protects synchronizerss.

Dealer won’t do anything unless your diff blows up. Keep driving - this looks relatively normal for a first change IMO. Slightly more than mine had.

 

My '20 looked rather like that on the first rear diff oil change (27700 miles). Probably the worst looking "break in" oil change I have ever seen.

Not really concerned unless it keeps doing it.
