I posted in another thread about a metal popping noise I get *after* turning on an incline (I had dealer look into it, but they were unable to reproduce the sound). Now, on top of this sound, I'm hearing subtle pops and clings *while* turning on inclines. Especially if it's bumpy.

I think these sounds are produced as a result of twisting/flexing of the chassis/frame.

I noticed the maintenance recommendations in the manual include "Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body". The manual describes this as, "Re-tighten the seat-mounting bolts and front/rear suspension member retaining bolts to specified torque".

Has anyone ever done this or had it done? Anyone have a complete list of where these bolts are located? What are the torque specs? Could I get the dealer to do this work under warranty? (i'm coming up on 36k miles)

Check the bed bolts. Mine were loose because the knucklehead at line-x didn't tighten them enough. I took them out, added lock tite and it fixed it

ok just checking the trd skid is known for the poping you are describing. Do you happen to have a video of the noise you could upload?

my phone didn't pick up the noise very well, so you'll have to turn your volume waaay up most likely. The sound occurs at exactly the 2 second mark.

Following.....Mine has a light popping noise pulling onto an incline as well, but I thought it sounded like it was coming from the back glass area. I was thinking it was just a structural integrity thing having a roll down back glass, nothing in a fixed position. But I haven't located it nor taken it to the dealership

Update - the noise appears to occur at the same speed (12-15 mph), and only the first time I reach that speed after turning on the truck. So here goes my new theory - I think it's related to the automatic abs check the truck does, and it's causing the dust shields to pop. Thoughts?

Edit - Looks like this is an old issue (2001), and I'm just the latest to bring it up...

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/need-advice-major-clunk-sound.2592/page-2

Edit 2 - the noise apparently is reported to come from the abs actuator itself. one person reports getting toyota to replace it. so my dust shield theory was, in fact, stupid lol.

if that is the noise that you are hearing, then that is completely normal. at ~15mph, the abs system does a check and you hear a little pop. my Tacoma did it and my tundra does it.

not to be argumentative, but i wouldn't call it normal unless all tundras do this. from what i understand and have read, that's not the case. the abs self-test is normal, the loud metal clunk/pop is not IMO.

AFAIK, all tundras make the little pop sound during the abs self check. if you are hearing something different than that, then I don't know what it is.

New here to the community. Just got a 2017 trd off road cm.
300 miles on the odo and it has that popping sound. It does it periodically around 10-15mph. I thought something was wrong with it.
What what you guys are saying that it is normal???

every time you first start the truck and then hit 15mph, the ABS system does a check and you hear a little pop sound. however, it should only do that once. if you keep hearing the sound after that, then there could be something wrong.

I will make a recording of what I am talking about. I will have it posted later today.

That little popping sound freaked me out the first couple times I drove my Tundra after purchasing it. But sure enough it does it every time, 1 time, at 15 mph almost on the dot.

I have a popping noise at the front, too, but it's related to my driver's side body mount. I've just been too lazy to fix it.

Do you guys have your auto door locks turned off? I think the door locks at 15mph too. Probably why I never hear this popping sound you speak of.

I had this same problem with popping sounds from the front of my truck. The sounds were most noticeable when coming in /out of my driveway which is on an incline. I saw a post about problems with the TRD skid plate so decided to drop mine this morning to have a look. Sure enough, I could see where the skid plate was rubbing on the frame cross-member at the back (picture below). With the skid plate off, I took the truck out for a ride and it didn't make a peep. I thought about mounting some washers to provide some clearance at the rear bolts but decided to adhere some small pieces of rubber from an old bicycle tube over the spots that were rubbing. I just used some silicone adhesive to attach the rubber. I mounted the skid plate back up and no noises!! Problem solved - for now.IMG_2908.jpg IMG_2910.jpg

I installed nylon washers between the PRO shield and the frame. Problem totally solved.

There is a Toyota bulletin on this and gives the torque specs. I think we all need to call Toyota Care and get them to fix this once and for all. 800-331-4331
