I’m new to the thread. I’m needing some input. I’m looking in to buying a 2002 Tundra 4.7 with 90k original miles. $8500 is the asking price(is this to high?)It’s a one owner truck and has been garage kept no rust excellent shape. It is a 2wd though and I’ve heard some things about the 2wd trannies having a lot of issues compared to the 4wd models. Do I have anything to worry about with the transmission or is there anything else I should watch for in this year of truck? Also the timing belt has never been replaced should that be my #1 priority if I do end up buying it? Any input would be much appreciated.

Seriously, read the thread just linked. It answers all your questions and more. Granted, I may be a bit biased, but ...

Never heard that. All drivetrains can have their issues. Rust and timing belt are your bigger worry.

Other than rust, yes. You may get lucky because it's low mile, but lack of use dries out rubber, so ... maybe you won't. Not worth the risk.

    It’s $8500 too high for a 2wd.

That's the planetary gear issue that some 00- mid 03s had. I'm pretty sure it affected 2wd and 4wd since it was just the tailshaft that was different.

But yeah, that's a 20 year old piece of rubber keeping valves away from pistons. I'd have em lower the price so you can fit that in. Got any pics?

Ha. OP, if a 2WD suits your needs then do it. Sounds like a nice truck. Personally, part of what makes our trucks unique and collectible (and thus worth $8500 when they’re 20 years old) is being 4WD. I looked for a long time to find mine (I wanted 4WD) and then jumped on it. I passed on some great 2WD deals to get it.

Ah. Yup, that's in the thread @JasonC. linked up. Last bullet point in the "Important considerations" thread. I thought it was universal so didn't designate a drivetrain.

    Winner winner chicken dinner.

If the frame truly turns out to be rust free, even at 2WD it's not a bad price. But just know most competent Toyota mechs or dealerships are gonna charge you $900-$1,500 in most places to do the timing belt and water pump which is waaaay overdue on years, and due on miles (supposed to change every 9yr or 90k miles, whichever comes first). This is in the maintenance schedule in the documents the truck came with. Seller can't argue it doesn't need to be done.

And just know - low mile trucks come with their own set of issues. Pics are linked up in that 'so you wanna buy ... ' thread.

Looks like a nice, clean truck. I also wouldn’t necessarily call that a “low” low miles truck in the sense that it hasn’t been run enough to prevent cack buildup in the motor. But who knows. My 42k-mile truck was infrequently used but when it was, it was driven on long hunting and fishing trips; but then it sat untouched since 2019 and still runs like a sewing machine. Timing belt/water pump job ran me about $1200.
