Obviously everyone on here is well aware of what a QC hold means by now. But if you’ve been told there is a ship hold at port, what does that mean exactly?

For myself, I ordered my 2023 Toyota Tundra, Army Green, 1794 Edition, TRD off road, I-Force Max truck on November 19, 2022. I was first told it would be delivered by December 29, 2022. It now has a ship hold on it and I'm told hopefully it will be here the second week of March 2023. From what I've seen on the Net it has to do with a computer programing glitch for the digital display. I can't get any information from the dealer, they just say it's still on a ship hold. Last November, I made a $1,000 deposit to secure the truck. I've told the dealer if I don't get it my truck by the middle of March, I want my $1,000 deposit back. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve but Christmas day keeps getting postponed.

wouldn't you rather them fix everything prior to taking delivery instead of getting it and then being pissed there are things wrong?

Oh of course. But they are either really slow at figuring this out or it is happening under some very specific race conditions. My delivery date went from 1/9, to 2/10, to 3/10 over the past 3-4 weeks so the carrot is just dangling at this point

Edit: to add, I just wish there was better communication from Toyota down on things like this

I've read horror stories where one individual waited 10 months for his truck and another waited 8 months. I'll be happy if I can get my truck in March after 4 months.

a ship hold is to ensure those on QC hold are processed first, then once those are done the ship holds are processed (to ensure more shipped vehicles are not put on QC hold once they arrived at a port).

right now the latest i have heard is that the tundra is on a software update qc hold. its not the "a" pillar fix that is holding the rav4 and highlanders on qc hold currently.

the rav4/ highlander fix is supposedly coming out feb-5 and the tundra qc hold is suppose to clear on feb-15.

I had mine Tundra limited 4x4 crew max with 6.5 bed on Jan 5 I was told by the dealer at that time it would be 45 to 60 days in which I was fine with then a week later I called my salesman and I am told they don't know when it will arrive my problem is I put 1,000.00 down if I would have known there were still having issues I would have not given them my money until the trucks started showing up on the lots needless to say I am pissed

Isn't it funny how they can be literally built on the same day, at the same place, yet only one is allowed Lunar Rock?

Toyota has had my $1,000 since August of '21. Now the truck is caught up in the QC hold.

Ordered a 23 wind Chill Pearl Limited Trd Off Road June 17th, was told it would arrive October 17-Dec 17, 2022. Was then told Dec 9th it would be 45 days, was told today it’s going to be at least another 30 days. Starting to get real impatient.

Called my dealer today and they are saying Build date of 2/6. Nothing was mentioned about a QC hold.

I have been in your shoes so let me help shed some light.

In early June of 2022 I also put a grand deposit down on my Tundra. I tracked the truck through the rail system which showed me a ship date of late June and of a delivery date to my local yard of early July. Around the 4th of July the rail showed delivery to my local yard near Cleveland, Ohio. Then the dreaded news from my sales person said it was in QC Hold!
Like you I wanted to know what the heck does this mean!? I did receive my truck on August 11 which is the same day it was shipped from the holding rail yard.

I was fortunate enough to meet a “Local Toyota Engineer “ In the fall of 2022. I had some issues with my Tundra and Toyota was in the area and wanted to take a look at my truck. In that time I asked the engineer about the QC hold process. Long story short Toyota sends out Local Engineers in your region to go to either dealerships and rail yards to perform work on Toyota vehicles that require specifics that your mechanics cannot do.

In our cases the QC holds are because there is a quality or materials or software upgrade/fix from Toyota that became active after the ship date. In my case it was a back up camera issue that had to have a software fix. I told the engineer that my back up camera update could have easily been done by my local Toyota mechanic and the engineer said that it falls under the NTSB regulations that once the vehicles leave the plant they cannot to be sold / released until all vehicles meet the NTSB requirements.

The problem with QC hold is availability of the local Toyota engineers. There is only a handful and we wait until the vehicles are fixed. Unfortunately this is a grey area and the dealer and customers are left in the dark on specifics.

While I tracked my Tundra to the rail yard and it sat for a month! My local dealership received Tundras that were built after mine! It was so frustrating to say the least.

Hope this helps with understanding the QC hold process at least for our vehicles.

    Ordering vs Allocation

For some of you that this applies to I should probably help with the clarity of the Toyota receiving process.

All of us cannot order a specific Toyota vehicle.
All Toyota dealers get monthly allocations. This is dependent on your local Toyota dealership volume and also Toyota’s availability of materials when assembled. It takes 1 day to build our Tundras from start to finish.
As far as what your local dealer tells you or promises you is at the sole discretion of your sales person.
Toyota on a monthly basis will tell your local dealer what is allocated for them and the vehicles are given a temporary VIN # Once the vehicles are scheduled to be built and are built your sales person will then give you the permanent VIN #

Once you are given the permanent VIN # is when you are able to track it and that’s when your clock should start.

So it’s best to keep an open mind for actual delivery dates until you have the permanent VIN.

This is exactly what happened to me @Mick1953 Original deliver through Portland planned for 12/29. It was delayed on the rail about 3 weeks, since then they told me it’ll be 2-7 days until it is transported to my dealership in central Oregon. This went on for about more 3 weeks until 2/9, when they informed me of the QC hold. Estimated early March delivery now. Fingers crossed, I didn’t anticipate my custom camper to finish being built before the truck was delivered!
