Exactly, just follow what is recommended by Toyota. Anything else is more of an emotional issue and a waste of money and time.

I’ll just throw out Toyota recommends 5k mile oil changes if you have a FFV 5.7 and 2,500 mile changes if you use E85. And if you use E85 I have some beachfront property for sale.

And again I say, it's not the color that has anything to do with any degradation. You're burning hydrocarbons for fuel. You're going to darken your oil long, long before something else causes any degradation. So in relation to color, it's still no and no!

If your full synth oil is suffering some sort of degradation prior to 10,000 miles, either it's a piss-poor synth, or you already have major mechanical problems with your engine. Lots of people here already know that I've posted several times about my 20-25K oil changes with Amsoil, and seen the Blackstone reports on the samples I've sent in. My truck has 190K+ on it and goes those 20-25K miles between changes (usually about a year) without having to add a drop between changes. It'll go three times the 190K by the time I'm so old that I have to give it up, and it'll still run like new. I've had several vehicles over the years that I've treated the same way, and every one ran like new when I sold it. One of those had well over 500K miles.

And yes, I do very little stop and go driving. It does matter, and all should take that into account. But still 10K with a decent synth should handle that.

The manual for my 5.7 FFV says 5,000 miles.
It also says 0W20, with a clearly stated restriction:

    upload_2023-1-25_14-15-35.jpg

My Toyota Master Mechanic family member also says use what the manual states.

I also live in the hot south west, and I think thicker oil would be better when it's 110 on the highway. But 0W20 works it seems.

And the same exact engine being driven in other countries with higher weight oil, all perfectly fine, because of no CAFE standards. SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30.

Assuming that's true, that's certainly interesting! Do you have any references to prove that?

I can back him up. I’ve seen it in print but don’t have it handy. Pretty sure Toyota allows up to 15-40 depending on ambient temp.

Pistons have 5 rings. 2 compression, top 2. Then you have 3 oil rings. Top ring looks like a compression ring followed by a squiggly ring and then another compression ring type.

Its been posted many times over on here. This is right from Toyotas TIS system. Notice how Mexico can run what ever they want and the same truck with the same engine in the USA is limited to 0w20.

With only 55k, I don’t believe you have damaged the engine. With that said, it would be wise to start doing oil changes every 5k. Your engine will be better off with more frequent OCI. Personally I change my oil every 3k or 6 months. The majority will say that’s excessive, but I don’t care.

I'm a 5k OCI guy with synthetic, that being said and I've said it before, we had a fleet vehicle on yearly oil changes using bulk 5w30 non synthetic go over 190,000 miles with zero engine issues and it didn't burn any oil. It met it's demise due to rust and rot. Engine was still serviceable. Takes a lot to kill an engine and with any of todays oil, there is nothing to worry about.

I suspect that the "severe duty" maintenance schedule is closer to what the engineers actually recommend and the standard maintenance intervals is marketing/less total waste generation rating/etc.
I do 5k-7k intervals, once I get to 5k I try to find time to change it, if I don't find time and I get to 7k I make time to change it.
If you're going to do your own oil changes, get the fumoto valve (or competitor), it makes oil draining much easier and cleaner.

I change my oil every 10K, and I'm currently at 219,000 miles. Truck runs like new, never burns any oil.

It's worth mentioning that the Million Mile Tundra Guy only changes his oil every 10K also.

    Too many, but not enough....
This guy was a rare example of the perfect candidate for 10k oil changes. Extremely long drives over long distances in open areas.

I’m have a theory on this and I’m convinced manufacturers are suggesting these crazy long intervals for two reasons.
    1. They are footing the bill for the maintenance packages included with new vehicles to remain competitive with other brands so it would behoove them and their bank account to do less maintenance.
    2. Even at 10k mile oil change intervals, it’s not doing enough damage/wear to effect the vehicle until it’s considered “high mileage” (over 75k). Most people ditch their vehicles way before that mark so they don’t have to worry about warranty replacing engines during that timeframe.

With a new vehicle, I change my oil at 1000 miles, 3000 miles, 6000 miles, and 10,000 miles. If you notice the intervals, they’re 1k-2k-3k-4k. Once I get through that cycle at 10,000 miles, I continue at 5k intervals from that point forward. The first few oil changes usually have some significantly sized metal shavings in the base of the plastic canister that need to be rinsed out with brake parts cleaner. This is normal from a new engine. I’m glad I don’t leave that stuff in there acting like an abrasive for the full 10k miles that are recommended.

Or with newer synthetic oils and filters there is no need to change oil every 3000-5000 miles?
Change is hard for a lot of people. Bottom line following recommendations from the auto manufacturer is best practice.
