Drink some coffee, and then rethink it. Watch a YouTube and write down the sockets you need, think it's two sizes. The ball joint is 4 bolts. Get some landscaping blocks and put the factory jack on top of them and get that sucker in the air. The best way to get it to roll is a movers dolly or with plywood and a rolling jack. Deal is, you don't want it moved like that with it on that tire. In the end, I estimate it to be more work and risk getting that thing ready for a flatbed than putting a new ball joint on it. When you finish, I bet you'll be pissed they were going to charge you so much in the first place.

Anything can be a pro with a sticker on it. I tried that hybrid sticker for my Tundra to park in the hybrid only spots. Only got by the female parking enforcer and none of the guys. Most likely she didn't know much about trucks. Had to give up after the 2nd write up otherwise the 3rd would go to my supervisor. Short lived but epic.

Alright, I'm sorry about poking fun of the 1st Gen TRD Pro. The ball joint is an easy job. A torque wrench is the only real specialty tool you need, if you even consider a torque wrench a specialty tool. Replace it and have fun getting to know your rig that much better.

The typical off-road thing to do when this happens is use a heavy duty ratcheting tie down to pull the ball joint back up into place, more or less, so you can get off the mountain.

But as mentioned, jerry rigging it enough to roll, is barely any easier than actually just fixing it for real.

Lol. Thanks! Yep…when I first found this site n created a log on…I put that on my profile not even following any of the trim levels closely! I even thought that rear decal said Pro! Lol. I certainly wasn’t trying to be a poser and fluff my 01 up anymore than it is…just wasn’t well versed in trim levels…& really still not well versed in em…but I know I have to stick with the SR to get the front bench seat for when I upgrade.

Any ideas how to do this ratchet strap rig? Can’t find any youtubes on it…and if I can do it just to roll it onto a flat bed then I can get it to my mechanic

I would use at least 2 ratchet straps if your goal is to move it onto a wrecker. Around the Upper to lower control arm to get them close together. Either the front side or the back, front side may be easier. guide the ball joint back into alignment. Then wrap one around the whole knuckle end around the upper and lower arm there as well. Once they are all close together and in place, big zipties wherever you can to keep things lined up. Your ratchet straps may get ruined.

Thanks!! Will I actually be ratcheting these two components together…or just tying em together? Will they be moveable by hand once the truck is lifted up?

    @Adventundra

this is all the good advice. If you don’t use OEM Toyota parts, you won’t know what you’re getting. LBJ failure on these 1st gens is common, but avoidable. Now that it’s happened to you, don’t let it happen again.

They are under spring tension. Not easily moved together, hence the ratchet straps. You will be man handling the components together. May need a pry bar. A second set of hands would help too.

Thanks!! I touched base w my mechanic who has not made this a priority, no communication, ghosted a few scheduled days of doing it in my driveway….including today…& he said he bought “aftermarket” parts but they are not OEM…I think I need to cancel him n use someone else if I can get it on a flatbed

    ^^^ +1 on this.

To get the ratchet straps on you've got to jack up the truck and support it. Once you've done that, the job is half done... might as well replace the ball joint at that point.

@Adventundra Did you watch the video in post #19? You just need 2 wrenches (17mm & 27mm) and a hammer. (you don't need to remove the axle nut, so you won't need a 36mm)

Gotchya! Thanks!! Yep…I posted that video and have to watch it a few more times to soak it in. Any advice bout how to get this thing up to be able to work on it…it’s on uneven dirt…maybe a tall box made of landscape ties …or…any type of roller I can rest under the control arm then pull it back 20 ft to flat driveway? Or just do it where it sits?

Hey there! Mechanic in the video I found in post #19 used TRW parts…any difference between OEM? Are you familiar with TRW LBJ parts? I think both run bout the same cost.

I'd try to do it right where it sits.
Do you have jacks and stands? RR ties would be good to support it once you got it off the ground. You may have to jack in stages: jack it up, set it down on blocks/stands, put blocks under the jack, jack it further, put in more blocking.

Edit: I wouldn't use TRW ball joints.
