If it were up to Toyota none of them would have the locking gas cap.

but it’s federally required for hybrids

I wonder why that would be significant in the design of a hybrid as far as the gov is concerned? why a solenoid? Landcruiser has the locking cap with cable release, a solenoid is another thing to fail....

I’d have to look up the literature but it has to do with the pressurization .

Ford is the same way. I was made when my 5.0 came with the non locking gas door. Found out it’s only in the PB

Sooo... Very informative, and thank you everyone for your sympathy and understanding!

Any tips on how I can find a locking gas cap that won't throw a CEL?

It's not a locking gas cap. It's a locking gas door. I get it for the Fords as they don't have a gas cap and possibly seal the door but this Tundra hybrid still has a gas cap under the door and as far as I can tell, the door and cap is otherwise the same. The locking door on my Tundra hybrid is definitely not sealed.

I also wish they put the release button by itself or on the end of the row. I have to 'hunt' for it a bit each time among other buttons that are otherwise rarely used.

Even better, do it like my Lexus that has push to open on the door but it's locked if the doors are locked. Much, much more practical and handy to me and not sure why they didn't copy this smarter approach, given the 'Toyota way'.

    The gas
This is correct, hybrids like the new iforce max equipped tundra have pressurized tanks. When the button is pressed, the pressure is released and the lid opens. My phev tuscon is the same way, as is the power boost ford.

I’m sure there’s an expensive harness, module, and other stuff on top of the door and button.

Toyota's not the only one that does the odd remote start shut off, my 2021 Mercedes GLE 350 did the same thing with remote start, soon as you touched the door handle it shut off. That GLE was probably the worst vehicle I've ever owned. So happy to be rid of it.

Have you tried locking the doors then seeing if the gas cap door will open? We went thru this on my wife's lexus , anyone can open the gas cap if the cars is running or just unlocked. but if you park, and lock all 4 doors.....the Gas cap Door is LOCKED with no access to to the fuel

I don’t know what it is but it looks as if the Tundra dwarfs that F150. Significantly so…

The Tundra was a little closer than the Ford but it definitely looks bigger .

Got word today from Trail Grid Pro that they are working on a front/rear facing anytime camera package for the 2022 and up Tundras. I am very excited about this, as it is one of the only things my SR5 doesn’t have that I would like when off-roading. They said they expect to release first half of 2023. Below is the link to the previous version for reference.

Just minor stuff. For example, Undercover bed cover, Tufskinz custom door sill protectors, and TRD air filters.

Just some information for people who don’t know (because I didn’t know prior to this):
I left a light on overnight and my battery was dead in the morning. Jumped the car and got it to start but the truck threw like 5 different codes and a CEL. Parking brake malfunction, pre-collision system malfunction, secondary collision brake system malfunction, LTA unavailable. Warnings went away after about 15 minutes of driving, except for the CEL. CEL went away after a few cycles. Spooked me initially because I didn’t know that the battery has to reach a minimum charge before all those errors go away. Just an FYI!
