What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

How many miles? Going just by what I quoted, it stinks of fuel pump to me.

That is one I will more than happily pay my mechanic for. I've replaced one and that was too many.

 

I don't mind if it's something you can quickly lift or pop the bed off to manage. But I really loathe having to drop a tank because it's impossible to get to the pump any other way (under cab, etc.)

Having to deal with all the wiring and hoses and crap to drop tanks sucks IME.

 

Didn't PHM determine it's best to also replace the seal when doing the fuel pump? Are those the only two parts we need? It doesn't seem like a fun job at all.

 

Makes sense. The gasket is obsolete for the 02, not sure about 04. PHM made his using FIPG or you could do the @shifty` method and cut a new piece of gasket from a blank sheet.

 

I've also just realized I've never changed the fuel filter while I've owned it or know if anyone has ever changed it. So that may be first on the list.

I attempted to at one point and the fuel lines started twisting so it just got tightened back up and left alone. I'll probably just cut it out and replace some tubing, may as well get some use out of my flare tool.

 

I got the gasket at RockAuto, so I know they have it for 2004.

 

It's literally never the fuel filter on these trucks. Don't bother.

Members with 500k+ miles on their truck are still on the original filter.

That's exactly what I'm talking about.

I can't tell you how many people on here have replaced their inline filter with the mentality it's going to fix some issue. It never does. And people bust the shit out of their knuckles to swap it, dick up fuel lines, it's a pain in the ass.

Have I seen replacing inline fuel filters on other vehicles fix sluggishness when you gun it? Yes, a couple of times. So far, in all of the fuel-delivery-hesitation-and-similar problems posted on here, it's never been the fuel filter. It's already pretty limited what's going to reach the filter in the first place, the fuel pump has a screen on it to prevent things getting through. It doesn't appear the fuel filter is a "normal service interval" item for the 1GT.

Fuel pump has two speeds. If anything, the symptom of "stumble @ 3k RPM" suggests the resistor in the fuel circuit could be going out, and not allowing the fuel pump to kick from low into high volume. Or maybe the fuel pump is having trouble actually switching between modes. Would only know by watching PSI on fuel during operation.

 

My filter wasnt hard to change. And fuel filter is always on my list of general maintenance for any vehicle i get. A couple months ago, the fuel filter was plugged on grandpas rv, but since he had already ordered a pump, i changed the pump too.

 

I bought a Wix replacement filter, but subsequently learned that the filter holder clamp thingy was rusted all to shit so I couldn't open it to change filters...Abort! Abort! I ordered up an OEM filter with mounting gear attached. Crawled back under my truck and realized... "how the hell am I going to unbolt that! It looks like they mounted it before they put the cab on!" Abort! Abort!

Now I've have ~ $80 worth of new filters sitting in my parts box for the last year or so...and my truck still runs fine!

 

Swapped mine for general maintenance reasons. Cali- then Southern truck so no rust issues. Easy swap other than all the gas pouring on you during. Gotta be quick! Think the sock in the gas tank on the pump does all the heavy lifting for fuel filtering.

 

Never changed the V6 fuel filter, and had toyota change it on crackie when they were doing the frame.

 

@bmf4069 is a big fan of changing the fuel filter.

 

Operation fender mod underway. Needs some more development. Gonna need to cut the bumper to improve the lines as well. Last pic is the untouched side.

I can do that. I’ll take more progress pics. I’m figuring it out as I go, but it’s not for everyone, lol. In my setup and tire size, it will eliminate pushing fenders on the big hits on a turn. It better.

 

I have a buddy, that all of his conversations lead to; worst case scenario is we do this and this.
Why is it always worst case scenario, let’s just plan for the best!
But his worst case scenario’s were like zombies and other stupid shit, so it was always taken with a grain of salt. Hahah that’s the “not terrible “ coming out in me

I'm at about 99% sure it's the pump now, it's not dead but it's for sure not putting out full pressure.

Played with fire this afternoon and made 5 stops on the way home. Only at one of those where it was off less than 5 minutes did it start on the first key turn.

1st try it fires up then dies in about 2 seconds, second key turn it starts low and kind of bumbles up to a low but normal idle.
