Rear view mirror

I am new to club and have a 2006 Tundra access cab step side. I am looking to replace the standard rear view mirror with the self dimming mirror and wondered if anyone else has done this. The replacement mirror did not come with the plug ( 127 ) and wiring diagrams don't show if the plug is already there behind the upper console. Anyone know if it is there or will I need to get the plug and wire it in myself.

Need to know what cab your truck has. Or any details about your truck, since you didn't update your profile with them.

Different cab types have different roof wiring. There are a couple of threads on this in the forum, but need more info to help.

 

I replaced my standard one with one from a 2005 Sequoia. The Sequoia has all the "conversion" pieces that you need to mount it to the glass, since Toyota wants to be weird and not use a standard set screw type. I then ran wiring down to the fuse box in the dash. I didn't use the reverse wire, so it is simple. Power to Key on source and then just ground to where ever.

I install an auto dimming mirror in all my vehicles. The easiest autodim mirror to get and use is from the 96-98 or 99-04 Grand Cherokees. They are Gentex 187 mirrors, power and ground. So simple and there are thousands of them in junkyards. I put a Grand Cherokee mirror in an 08 Pontiac, works great.

 

For access/regular cab trucks, this is definitely a practical way. For double cab, many owners found they had the overhead console harness' wiring and auto-dim mirror plug pre-wired, tucked up into the headliner. It was a feature for Sequoia, and DC is the only cab type closely related. us AC/RC folks got screwed there, but I'm going to find a better plug-and-play solution one of these days, to integrate it with factory wiring, dammit!

Worth saying, there's a ton of aftermarket ones from Voxx/Gentex you can buy new, also. Their model number ADVGEN2A is around $90-100 depending where you buy it, and it comes with all the wiring and accessories (other than Buss add-a-circuits). I've actually got a spare Gentex auto-dim with Homelink and compass I don't need, with an adapted harness and windshield cover, because I bought a newer, edgeless Voxx model to replace it. In case anyone is looking ...

 

Mine is a 2006 access cab SR5 Tundra, The mirror I am going to install is from a 2004 Sienna and has the auto dim and compass. The plug to connect it was not included but looks like it is 127 on wiring diagram. What I am wondering is does the factor harness already have the plug or wires or do I need to run them myself and where would i get the plug for the mirror?

 

Ideal situation is to get the donor vehicle's harness and adapt it.

If that's not an option, if you'll look at the raised writing on the rear to see which model Gentex you have (it's usually 3-digit number for the older mirrors, in the 200/300/400 range) you can then buy pre-made harnesses cheaper than the OEM connector, pins and wiring.

If you have any questions about whether it's the right harness, Bob usually responds pretty quickly on fleaBay. A few people here and other forums I browse have had great luck with him.

I added a camera mirror with auto-dim in my DC and didn't use my harness (the Limited came with auto-dim from the factory). But I had to add wiring anyway for the camera. For power I used a fuse tap.

I've got the best deal on the internet for a Homelink, compass and auto-dim mirror but I haven't verified if it mounts as the Tundra's do (do your own research). I have one sitting in the garage for my daily driver, took about a week to get it here -

Holy crap, that is a great price, did it come with wiring? What version of Homelink does it use, do you know? Is there any manufacturer writing on the rear of the unit to identify who made it?

 

I actually looked it up using part number "A7062-ADUP1", and apparently it's available all over for that price. This parts/dealership place has it too.

Yep, but with a caveat: It only supports up to Homelink v4. Which should support many of the new encrypted Security 2.0 ones, I think. More info below.

Nope. It's a Gentex, and p/n HFCHL4 is clear in the pic. User manual is here.

Normal format for Gentex is this: Last three digits of the model "HL3" the 'HL' is 'HomeLink' and the number (3/4/5) indicates which version of Homelink it supports. In this case, HL4 means this supports HomeLink v4 garage door opening, so it will open some - but not all - new Security 2.0 encrypted motors. Anyway ... it's a smoking deal. This is one hell of a find. The only thing I'd warn against: DO NOT use the red t-taps that come in the kit! Those things are shit. Swap out for some Positaps instead, or don't use them at all.

 

Yeah I got one of the homelink adapter boxes (like you had for sale previously) to get it to work with my car ($50 or so) so I guess at this point it doesn't really matter what version it has.

Do those mirrors come in an auto-dim only, or maybe with a compass on it? Outside temp?

You can find them with dimming, compass, backup camera… homelink… hell I think there’s a model with map lights. Mine from an Avalon has the radio mic in it I never finished wiring..

 

All of the things you listed are available, and more. The spare I have and don't intend to use has compass, autodim, and HomeLink, and I think the compass is behind the mirror glass, you see it when it lights up.

For temperature, you need to wire in the temp sensor. I have a discontinued Toyota mirror wiring kit that comes with the temp sensor and all wiring to get it to the radiator support, picked it up on eBay for a good price a year or three ago. Options are out there

 

I just pulled my headliner shroud down to see about wiring. No joy. The only thing up there is the wiring for the dome and map light. I was hoping to get an easy install for a fancy mirror.

 

How do I know that they're going to fit? Just type in tundra or corolla on ebay

 

If you did find your mirror wiring, since you have a Double Cab, it'd likely be above the overhead console area (AC/RC trucks don't include it in their wiring)

If you found the mirror plug, it would be a wide flat (7pin) connector as others have found, like this (note the 3rd pic for location and connector appearance). Some people only find the overhead console wiring like this. You could totally just buy the OEM harness and re-wire your truck from the plug in the dash, up the A-pillar, and so forth - it's plug-and-play, more info on that here but it would use the "legacy" old-school mirror wiring connector I just mentioned.

For temp sensor wiring, this is where it plugs in, if you have the wiring. For HomeLink compatibility on the garage opener side, this info will help you know what version your garage door is so you know compatibility with mirrors. For HomeLink version information and how to decipher what HomeLink version is supported on the mirror side, so this post.

 

Most mirrors use standard window tombstone, or whatever it's called.

Really, the best deal I've seen so far is the Kia one that's linked above. For under $30 shipped, to get that mirror, with all of the necessary wiring ... it's absurd. You won't be able to find a better deal on fleaBay. I paid $50 for mine, which came out of a mystery vehicle, I just know the LCD coloring is blue. Different vehicles have different colours.

 

Great reply man thanks. My wiring is like the one in the second link. In this case the juice isnt worth the squeeze IMO. If I had the wiring up there Id tackle this project.

 

You still have an option. Test the voltage on each wire with key OFF (constant), key ON (accessory), and see if you have accessory power on any of the 3 or 4 or 5 wires there. Ground is typically white with black stripe. If you have accessory pwr and ground, you could buy the female plug online, and pin off that connector to the mirror. Easy peasy, no-hackey.

 

I did that. They are all constant power for the map lights.

 

@shifty` Great info as always. Any known new plug n play replacements for the Donnelly 015603? It's the auto dim, compass, temperature mirror.

Google isn't turning up much in the way of new. Only used. My autodim feature isn't working and I've heard it's easily rendered inoperable, so I'm leary of going used.

3 wires makes home link, compass and dimming work. You just need power ground and accessory power.

Nope, that's a weirdo mount. It's possible to remove the old mount. I dunno what they include in the kits that removes old adhesives but ... maybe it's acetone? I've always just bought a kit at the LAPS all of two times in my life when I've needed to replace my tombstone.
