Perhaps a moot point but wireless CarPlay uses wifi for phone data and Bluetooth for phone control (play / pause / cancel nav / etc)

I don’t find it burns my crappy iPhone se battery too bad. But I also often plug it in to power. Id rather have a good wireless charging pad option like I do at home just haven’t gotten around to doing that.

Same here. I listen to Spotify on my wired headphones 9 hours a day, 2 days in a row at work and I'm down to around 50%.

You may've be joking, but either way I'll toss this out.

I never claimed to be sXe. Did I love me some bands who espoused that lifestyle, like Minor Threat, 7 Seconds? Totally.

Lifestyles are a choice, but don't always jibe with the realities of being human. Things that are toxic or impact sobriety are necessary sometimes.

Like, for me, I have beer to thank for my health and sanity. I started getting kidney stones at age 13, before it was widely recognized (medically) teenagers got kidney stones. As a result, I was in the ER with a new stone every 18-30 months average, up 'til my late 20s when I started drinking beer. That started with me having a beer night with dinner and stayed that way for years. I haven't had a kidney stone in 20-something years since, to the point I know there's no way it's a coincidence.

Of the several docs I've shared this anecdote with over the years, some were baffled or challenged it, yet virtually all European docs I've seen didn't bat an eye. One Scandinavian doc cross-training with a rheumatologist I was having a 1st consult with mentioned when you arrive at the ER in her country with a confirmed stone, they send you home with a six pack and tell you to drink it over the next 12-24 hours, then come back in a week for follow-up tests. "I've never seen it not work"

Anyway, sXe is cool and all, I respect anyone who can commit. I def won't knock it. Respectability-wise, it's right up there with living in celibacy to focus on your faith. However, I also realize it's not a feasible reality for many. I had friends who needed methamphetamine (Adderall, for ADHD) as a teen. Likewise, beer saved me two decades of pain, pain I'm not willing to return to. Beer, as silly as it sounds, is legit medicine.

I typically don't go overboard and drink more than two in one evening, one at dinner, sometimes one before or after. The other night we had friends over and had 5 or 6 shorties. If you see me acting a fool later in the evening, there's a strong possibility I pounded a couple back.

@shifty`, I never read your comments to mean you were sXe. I did read them to mean you knew what it was and were in the scene for a time.
That's wild that beer can be used to treat kidney stones. I reckon it's a good thing you're not an alcoholic or those stone-dissolving beers would put you between a rock and a hard place.

My iPhone 8+ has started running down the battery when I stream music via bluetooth. I thought it was just my phone being 4 years old and Apple intentionally killing it. It's not warm and I keep little to nothing running in the background. Damn you, SJobs.

    Ooof! Dad joke!

The one time I had to have surgery to remove one, they found they were calcium-based. I don't think the beer dissolves them so much as it causes you to purge your kidneys by way of the bladder so frequently which pushes them out when they're still small.

I can feel when I pass one sometimes. Little burning sensation immediately after peeing, and sometimes I'll hear them plink into the bowl or urinal. While that sucks also, I prefer it over curling up in a ball at 4am in the morning in writhing pain, they always seem to strike overnight while I was sleeping.

I'm running a 8s+ and had a 6s+ prior. With the 8s+, I was having the same issues until I FDU'd it last September, 2020. Basically took a backup of my install, then followed the FDU process to scrape the current firmware out, leaving a box of circuits, then iTunes lays a fresh install of iOS on the device, then you can restore from the backup like nothing happened.

Fixed my issues. Suggested to others also, fixed their rapid drain problems. May also solve yours?

Honestly, with how painful they are, it'd probably drive someone to smoke weed just to forget about it and not have anxiety about the next one coming.

Dunno if you've ever had a kidney stone get stuck in your ureter on its way out, but it's the most excruciating pain I've ever felt. And I've messed myself up pretty bad.

Unintentional dad joke no less! Big oof.

IDK about an FDU, but I'll certainly look into it. If I can do that and sneak an extra year or two out of my phone, I'll take the savings....and cling to my home button as long as I can. :D

    I meant DFU. Sorry.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263

Basically, you use that process to get it into a special mode, where the screen is black, but iTunes (either on Windows or MacBook) sees it with a "problem" and needing "update or restore".

If you choose the "restore" option, it scrapes iOS off, updates the embedded firmware/controller with the latest version Apple has - something they don't do with a standard update IIRC - then downloads and installs the latest compatible version of iOS.

This typically resolves most power/battery drain issues and other hardware-level bugs users will report. I can't tell you how many dozens of devices I've fixed out in the field using this trick. It's exactly what Apple techs do if you bring your device to the Apple Store.

DON'T FORGET TO BACKUP IN ITUNES FIRST!!

I didn't even explain what it feels like :D

Best way I can describe it for me is it's almost like someone stuck an oyster fork into a drill chuck, heated it up red hot, then stabbed it deep into your back just above the pelvis on the left or right side and pulled the trigger. Sharp, stabbing pain that's hot as hell, deep inside your lower torso, but so hot you just know it's in there deep and you can't get to it.

One of my old project managers birthed her son in a car on the way to a hospital, bringing a 10.5lb baby boy into this world. Level 2 vaginal tear in the process. She got a kidney stone 5 years later. Said she'd revisit that childbirth experience 10 times over before wanting to have another kidney stone.[/QUOTE]

If you want wireless AA, check this out -- https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/aawireless/x/22281079 -- Lots of info online and YT reviews. I am awaiting mine still, but folks say 30 minutes or less drives shouldn't cause too much battery drain. Longer trips, easy to just plug it in to charge or use wired AA. Nice to not have to plug in each time for running errands and such.

Unexpected parts purchase. Was dorking around last night, building up more info on Gentex mirror swaps and options so I could eventually throw up an article to sticky.

Somehow stumbled across this, buried amongst a bunch of listings ... 2006 era Homelink/Gentex mirror kit, a discontinued part. It was part of an OEM retrofit kit you'd get with purchase of an autodim Gentex mirror for a Toyota vehicle - includes all the wiring for the mirror, and that big spool of wire is the OEM outside/ambient temp sensor, with everything OEM you need between the overhead console, through the firewall, all the way out to the sensor in the front grille if I'm not mistaken. Wire colors match the Toyota EWD for lt green and grey on that sensor. Not sure, but looks like maybe the mirror plug is also a 10-pin, which my current Gentex 453 would have. We'll see.

I added to my watch list when I stumbled across it. The seller unexpectedly tossed out a massive discount I couldn't refuse.

    Nice find!

I find it interesting to see an OEM kit that includes splice taps. Curious to see how the install instructions say to do it.

Same was true for the OEM kit I picked up last year which was specifically made for FGT. This was solely for auto-dimming (no Homelink), hence the power cord only having a power wire and a terminal ring for grounding somewhere. Toyota had a crapload of similar kits. Took me forever to find this one.

@shifty` off close skim that appears to match the gentex w homelink and temp I got from Bob of bobs mirrors. I'd imagine I paid a bit more than you did. Comes with harness and stuff. Haven't started it yet, though I did get the camlock to wedge adapter on and I am rockin' the Tacoma mirror on it for the time being, without any wires for now.

From discussions with Bob it seems that a homelink v5 with temp is super hard to find, the one he sent me is homelink v4 which is possible to locate but not easy.

    So, interesting topic.

On the back of the mirrors is a series of numbers. The last three digits of the "MODEL" tells you what version of Homelink it is.

HL3 = Homelink v3: Cannot handle any new encrypted Security 2.0 door/gate openers.
HL4 = Homelink v4: Can handle some but not all Security 2.0 door/gate openers.
HL5 = Homelink v5: Can handle 99% of door/gate openers and supports 2-way comms with the opener.

    upload_2021-11-17_19-37-58.jpg

It seems like most vehicles I'm seeing 2018+ have HL5. 2012-2017 seem to be mostly HL4. Everything prior, HL3. This is hit or miss. Unfortunately, from what I'm reading, pinouts may be different between some of the 10-pin harnesses. Toyota may use slightly different pinouts. Not a lot of info out there.

Up until the v5 openers, Gentex had been using some common prefixes to that HLx portion of the Model#, like OBI, ZTV, and WZL, like OBIHL4 and WZLHL4. I haven't been able to decipher what those are - manufacturer specific? Manufacturer plus LCD segment color? Manufacturer, LCD segment color and features? TBD.

New-in-box models from Gentex (now Advent-Gentex) actually have two variants. Wired and non-serviceable Li-ion battery operated. Believe it or not, they have a great selection. I recomment hitting the Advent website to look at those, but don't just check out the four at the home page, click the "Gentex Mirrors" menu item and check out each section for what's out there. There's actually some reasonably priced HL5 mirrors, which can be found at cheaper costs through Crutchfield or Fleabay.

It seems the Sienna, Camry, Tacoma, possibly others had some form with compass and Homelink? Scion as well. Subaru Forester seems to be another one that pops up with them, but there are plenty of models out there. Whether the base is correct for our keystone is another matter. Some model numbers I've managed to find.

New models - think the featuresets are correct:
    ADVGEN45AB5 = standard autodim w/compass and Homelink v5, wired
ADVPMHL1LN = frameless homelink v5 no compass, battery operated/no wire
GENK4ABAT - supposedly homelink v5 no compass, battery operated/no wire

"Traditional" model numbers, you'd need to double-check features:
    HL4: WZLHL4, OBIHL4, 'Gentex 687'
    HL5: AECHL5 (2015-2019 Subaru, has integrated camera?), MAHL5A or MAHL5 (2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, also as TXM-A01)

Tip: One key indicator you've got an HL5 mirror is the presence of the up/down triangles, which are either mirror-glass-integrated, or housing integrated like this:

(maybe post more on this another time)

Most common cause of shit battery life: Display is set too bright. It's drastic what changing display brightness will do, assuming you're not using the device out in full sun all day. Going from 50% brightness to 80% brightness in an indoor setting, for example, will cut your battery life by more than half on most devices, from 10 hours to 3-4 hours. I'd recommend setting up auto-dim and keep it around 30% brightness for max life, even if streaming. Doesn't matter whether the device is Android or iOS, pretty much the same across the board.

If you think it's app related, both iOS and Android track which apps are using the most battery life/time. Quick Google search on your OS version will tell you where to find that.

But bluetooth comms will also eat battery. No doubt.

People still use Ipods? The battery on mine died in 2012. Haven't used it since I replaced it with an iPhone.
