Locked and loaded baby…what brand of oil should I use for full time 4wd driving. You know, in case I hit black ice?

Yep, GM has a great system for winter driving. I found out and remembered how my old 2002 Tacoma was with the oldish school 4WD last night with my 22 Tundra. Just need to make adjustments and it’s fine. My ‘15 Canyon spoiled me for snowy driving.

However, the Tundra did great in the snow and once I got back into shifting mode it was fine.

It would be great if they would put the LC system on these trucks.

Every Toyota 4x4 I’ve owned is like this. Back in 2003 I sold my 97 4Runner when I moved to Japan. This young kid came over and wanted to “test drive” it. He was a serviceman so I trusted him to take it for a spin. He brought it back 20 min later stating “your 4WD broke” and then he took off. Forget what part he damaged that I had to replace. Lesson learned always ride with them.

I had to read up on 4x4 vs AWD vs 2WD when I got my first Tundra. It's not intuitive.

But it works just fine if you know what you're doing.

I always hoped the tires would give first in a true bind in 4x4 mode.

At least you noticed it was binding!

I can tell right away by the way it drives when my wife leaves it in 4H. She is still oblivious that she forgot to take it off when out driving by the creek with the kids.

Fortunately it's all dirt roads from there to here, but still.

I have given up on trying to explain part time vs full time, driveline binding, and the function of differentials. I failed similarly when trying to answer the question "why would you want to shift your own gears?". Luckily her SUV is AWD and the truck is too big to drive.

I prefer how Toyota does it. Don't need "auto4wd" or any other bs quadratrac shenanigans. Old school 4wd/4lo, user operated is my preference. Hell I wish the Tundra was lever operated like my 4Runner Trail was. YMMV

Well, not exactly that as CoalDragger explained above. I've seen a lot of confusion about the subject in various forums. Difficult to explain the differences in one paragraph. I'll put it this way - I like to be efficient in my morning routine, so I shave with the rechargeable razor as I commute. In snow with ANY system that does not require swapping back and forth from 2WD to 4HI I drive with one hand on the wheel and shave with the other hand.
There's a lot to like about manual front hubs and manual Tcase. Simple, versatile, reliable, no electronic actuators. The '97 Taco 2.7l 4WD was a gamer. Having said that, I think Yota should implement the 2G Sequoia multimode Tcase into the 3G's.

I checked the it out, but backseat is small and tech is so inferior to the Tundra's... I just wish Toyota would have used auto transfer case then you won't have to worry about turns, etc,

Have you ever driven a truck or SUV with a Torsen equipped transfer case? I have and the Torsen full time 4 wheel drive system is superior in every way to the antique 4X4 system that we’re still using on the Tundra.

I suppose you must also like low power engines, rotary dial phones, cotton socks, light beer, well whiskey, and Spam instead of other clearly superior alternatives.

An old school selectable 4 wheel drive isn’t more durable, nor is it any more functional than a Torsen transfer case with high and low ranges with a locking feature.

Yes all those things are better. I had a Torsen once. My doc made me wear tighty whiteys for a month and a half. YMMV.

I could forgive most of those things, but preferring light beer is just not acceptable.
