Early this morning I encountered fog with the automatic high beam system active. I went to low beams and turned the automatic high beam system off using the switch. Within a second or so the high beams came back on with the dash light indicating the auto high beams were off. Driving with high beams in fog isn’t fun. Any thoughts?

I haven’t figured out how it works or suppose to work. Is it suppose to automatically dim when cars approaching or automatically brighten when no cars approaching. Does light on button mean it’s off or on

Yeah that's odd. Whenever I have turned the auto high beams systems off it stays off. I tried it out for a bit but found it more annoying than anything for my daily driving. I could see it being nice on the highway though.

If there is no green light icon with A on it then auto high beams are off. Sorry I can’t tell you which state the button in is. And if it’s on it’ll turn on when it doesn’t think it will influence others driving around you negatively.

When turned on, you click your high beams on. When it sense an oncoming car it turns them to low beams and the back to high after the vehicle passes.

So if button is lit the it automatically brightens headlights when there is no on coming traffic . It doesn’t automatically dim light though correct

You have to physically turn on the high beams then it will work like it should. If it turned on and you’re in low beams nothing will happen. At least that’s how it works on my 20.

That’s not how automatic high beams works in new Toyotas. Read your owner’s manual.

The left stalk does not need to be in a high beam position for the auto high beams to work, just the light on the button and the indicator light on the instrument panel.

It sounds like user error from OP. OP just needed to press the auto high beam button to turn it off, no need to move the stalk.

This is the correct answer. Also keep in mind that the auto high beam will only work if you do not have oncoming traffic. The sensors are really sensitive. I've had it have a brain fart when I approach a flashing yellow light intersection.
