Optimax burns so clean you don't even smell it. On the other hand the carbureted Black Max I had put out a nice puff of smoke on start up. The folks in CA would have loved it.

    Yup, marketing is EVERYTHING...........

Best/quietest oil I've used so far is the Valvoline Extended Performance. I also use 5W30

That's not the proper oil for our trucks.
    :eek2::eek::eek2:
I was thinking I would make this change once the oil clearances loosen up after 75-100k.

Oil clearances? The 5.7 3UR-FE can run a many different oils. Its just only spec for 0w20 in the states for the EPA. The Tundras sold in Mexico with the same engine can run all these, and this is straight from Toyota.

I see I have stumbled on live one.

So what's the downside of just sticking with 0w20?

That is interesting about the Mexico manual.

Down side of 0w20 is it does not protect well in higher temps and because its so thin it has a higher chance of blow by. The easiest way to understand the difference of 0w20 vs a higher viscosity oil is the sound of the engine. Many people know of the tick sound the engine makes, well that basically goes away when you run 5w30. Also you get better oil pressure with the heavier oil according to my oil pressure gauge, when I run 15w40 it will tend to sit dead center rather than just below like it does with lighter oils.

I am going to go 5w30 in all my Toyotas next change. My truck only gets used for truck stuff and towing our 30ft trailer.

I did 15w40 last and this summer, no issues, just drained it today and out in 5w30 for winter.

Yup, the manual for the 1UR-FE in my Lexus is explicit that it must be 0W-20. They even say that if you are in a bind, you can run 5W-20, but must switch it back to 0W.

But then you look at the owners manual for the Australian Land Cruiser and the 1UR will take anything up to xW-50 I think.

I personally run 10W-30 in mine. It doesnt get super cold here in Utah and even then mine is always in a garage and so it usually doesnt have to start much lower than 32F

I'm in Boston but regularly drive to NH, VT, and Maine in winter for ski season. Usually doesn't go much below 0°F. My snowblower take 5w30 so I'm sure there's no issue with 5w as far as cold goes. 0w oils didn't even exist until the 2000s.

Sounds like those folks need a block heater kit.

Absolutely correct. Only for use in 2 cycle outboards. Just an example of the ridiculous inflation we are seeing.

    That's funny.

It does get cold here in Utah, but nothing like what you are describing. We see just below 0F, but in short bursts.

    Just messing with you.

I’m running 0w20 Valvoline Extended Protection now and am happy with it quieting the valve train. I ran PUP and M1 EP beforehand and the valve train was louder with each of those.

Wind Chill is a specific term used to describe what the air temperature feels like to the human skin due to the combination of cold temperatures and winds blowing on exposed skin.

Yes, heat loss for living creatures or inanimate objects can be accelerated through convection, but this is not what windchill means.

    Ok professor.

We knew what the implication was.

I used to live in the mouth of a canyon where the wind blew like clockwork every morning. When winter hit, those windy mornings were brutal on my human skin.

I learned to not back my truck in the driveway during the winter, because when I did, the wind blew right into the grille and made for harder starts. When I put the tailgate to the wind, the truck would start easier in the morning.
