General Supercharger Thread

People on here say change sc oil (trd) at 100k miles, magnesum says it never needs to be done.
What are peoples thoughts?
I understand u can draw the old oil out with a syringe? (Did this on my gen3 4runner sc but not sure about this one)

 

Toyota also promotes lifetime transmission fluid.... My opinion would be to just change the oil. I have no opinion on the syringe, I haven't looked into it. I only have about 10k on my unit.

Additional opinion: Chances are that the coupler won't last 100K, kill two birds with one stone and do both at the same time.

 

I don't recall there being a way to change the fluid through the front though, I think the only oil access port is through the rear of the blower. (Assuming you were talking about just pulling the nose cone and not the entire blower off)

The REAL way to do it, is buy a Sniv Modular Supercharger Pulley, remove the entire blower, do the oil and the coupler and the pulley in one go and reinstall

Man, in that case I better find some more local magnuson friends on the east coast. You guys will eat through 3 couplers on your trek across the US to help me out. I’ll have fashioned all new wiring harnesses for myself out of roadside debris by the time you arrive.

On a serious note, and only 10% to poke fun…I would be curious about pieces of the worn couplers falling into the oil (it’s inside the same cavity) and getting ground up further by the rotor gears and getting into the bearings. I’ve only ever seen 1 blower have the bearings actually totally fail though and subsequently take out the engine. Point being, if anyone notices coupler noise I’d get it changed out, as well as the oil ASAP.

Few corrections . The coupler is completely isolated from the oil. When you remove the nose cone there's just this cavity where the coupler is chilling and nothing else really, just a hollow compartment. Even in the event that the coupler completely disintegrates (which usually it becomes "loose" and is less of a press fit than normal) then the would have to leave the cavity they sit in and would enter the rotor area. The oil is at the back of the blower, presumably just to lubricate the alignment gears, and is separate from everything else. Plus the coupler is just plastic, maybe fiber reinforced, so it's not doing much even if it gets caught.

I'm just giving you shit, but just so everyone else understands and doesn't get scared: a loud coupler is not remotely what I'd call a big issue. It should (eventually) be addressed, but all that a failed coupler results in is increased backlash between the rotors and the pulley resulting in it making noise as the coupler develops slop and kind of slaps back and forth. The oil is completely isolated from the rest of the unit, just as the coupler is fairly isolated from everything else too.


EDIT This was incorrect: You essentially have three compartments, the timing gears/oil, the rotors/core, and the coupler/front casting/nose cone. All of which are sealed from everything else.

EDIT Correction: The coupler is in the same compartment as the rotors, albeit in it's own cavity. In the event of catastrophic failure of the coupler it could result in being ingested into the engine. However that would involve the coupler cracking apart, which is not the failure mode of a "worn coupler".

 

My intent wasn’t to scare anyone. I was truly being genuine in the suggestion. I’ve never seen the magnuson for these trucks apart, I was just going off the construction of this video that I had watched for a VMP unit in which it appears to be constructed with the coupler hanging out right above where the oil resides. The oil is common to the front and back of the blower as the gears on both ends rotate together with the gears meshed. I assumed they were all constructed similarly.

At least it's not a spring loaded coupler like the taco! My spring had deformed and was trying to poke out the side when I swapped to a solid coupler

I updated my post since I did have one thing wrong...maybe (hopefully not more!). Been awhile since I pulled the nose cone so going off of SCOL photos:

The coupler is in the front compartment which is isolated from the gears. Where I was wrong is that the coupler is not completely isolated from the rotors, since in the following picture I think that is the rotors you see which makes sense. So the coupler if it disintegrated would have the capability of getting to the rotors, however that would require the coupler breaking apart which is different from the failure mode of the holes wallowing out:



The rotor assembly has the gears at the back, which in the following picture is the block at the bottom (or my assumption). The top shafts I assume slide into bearings, with the longer side then interfacing the coupler, point being that the oiled compartment (block on the bottom) is isolated from the coupler:

 

And to add after watching that video, that supercharger is using the rotors flipped around from how ours is. Their nose cone interfaces directly to the timing gears, so all of that is lubricated. However there is no oil pass through to the back of that supercharger shown, so the bearings that hold the far side (intake side, in both their case and our case) are not actively lubricated. Only the timing gears, and anything in it's vicinity.

 

Went out and checked slack to all wires/plugs. Maf, TB, Cam phasers (Pops had an issue from being tight and went to limp mode and wouldn't fire). All good, but won't hurt to check yours.

 

After watching the video I posted hopefully one could see my cause for concern for the scenario of the coupler failing on that particular design. I see from your posts it is a different design, so not all of the concerns are the same. Given the tolerances of the rotors I personally wouldn’t risk driving around at all with a worn coupler and the remote chance sending plastic pieces of any kind through the rotors spinning 10k+ RPM and then into my engine. Now if you’re done razzing me and editing your edits, I have wiring connectors to check on my Harrop.

 

@nobodyintexas were you able to get your truck home ok? Then again I’m ahead in time zone here…maybe you haven’t left yet.

 

Don't worry, there's only an issue if you suck in a rock or a socket like I did. I wouldn't sweat the coupler

How does a wiring harness cause these issues? Is the wire an incorrect gauge or do the connection(s) come apart and then the issues start?

In the last couple days I have had "issues" come up and I dealt with the vendors politely.
