Kind of a Random question but detail related....

I do not have a garage or covered parking available to me. My Tundra needs a strip wash, clay barred, wash, sealant, & ceramic coated. I don't want to do this in the direct sunlight of my driveway. Does anyone have any creative solutions to find some covered parking to accomplish this?

ABC Canopy on Amazon. Use ours for detailing sometimes but moreso for the beach and at the moto track. Decent quality and a better price. Not very "creative" but we use it for a variety of things so it was worth it.

Was just gonna suggest the same thing. Even though I do have a garage to use, I had to do a quad-cab long bed truck that did not fit all the way in. Having a canopy saved that day on that one.

Make sure you come up with a solution to anchor the legs......I used 4 sand-filled buckets to do it

haha thanks, I just imagine some poor guy putting the final coat of wax or ceramic on his truck when a gust of wind lifts the canopy off the ground and into his truck.

I'm doing a full paint correction on one of our cars today (clay, compound, polish and then griots 3-1 ceramic spray). I'd like to do 2 coats of the griots 3-1 for winter longevity. If I do the first coat this afternoon, what should I wipe it down with tomorrow before the second coat? Would griots speed shine work?

A good ceramic should only need one coat

The Griot's 3-n-1 isn't a ceramic. But I think I recall someone saying the Griot's didn't do well trying to layer 2 coats on each other. The 2nd coat became "grabby" when wiping off and didn't add any more longevity to it. I could be wrong tho. There a review thread in here for it

I carry a set of 35 and 40 dumbbells and a pack of zipties in the truck whenever I bring the canopy out for something. Over 100 lbs that thing isn't going anywhere lol. I also ended up picking up a set of velcro walls....doubles as a painting tent for projects.

I don't know if a second coat would do anything.ore than a good first coat. May be just like a wax and you're wasting product. Even with a ceramic spray like Mother's you still have to wait for it to cure and bond before a second coat even does anything. I'd either do something like Undrdog or just pick a good synthetic wax. Since you're probably done at this point what did we end up doing?

I got a canopy like this a while back and used it today. Quick and easy to setup. It has pockets integrated into the pieces that go down the legs to hold sand in. Came with rope too. I think mine is this one listed in pic. The top part edges flip out to provide and extra foot of overhang shade. Simple push up the middle piece to snap into place solo. Been happy with it so far

Thanks! The bottle says you can do 2 coats, but I get that it may not be that much more beneficial. I have done 2 in the past, but never did a wipe down before the second. Was just curious if the wipe down was necessary. I will probably just do 1 coat for now and then maybe another coat in a few months.

Does the bottle say how long to wait? Some can add second coating within a hour.

I just did this on the weekend and the bottle says wait 12-24 hours to apply second coat. As a side bar the second coat was not "grabby" for me.

I've added beadmaker the following day as a top coat to Griot's 3-1 in the past. Applies evenly, looks great. I usually add beadmaker after foam-cannon maintenance washes just to keep Griot's going strong (it does that anyway even without topping with beadmaker)

Well I was able to get it to a "barely" noticeable degree.
I've now tried a descaler (acid shampoo) and somewhat helped along with another polishing pass.
It seems like the tape+minerals+time combo has etched itself after 6 years of living on the paint, it actually reflects and refracts light... at least it no longer catches my nails.

Don't know if I should keep on debadgin now that this is as good as it gets. Not gonna try 2-3000 grit either.

PS: kinda ****ing stupid to be whining about this considering the paint is all scratched up from offroading :bananadead:

What is the best way to get wax off of plastic trim? I have a whiteish buildup on the plastic that reappears after wiping off, tried magic eraser and applying back to black it still reappears. It’s been several months. Thanks for your time

There are products made specifically for dried wax removal.
You could also apply low heat & buff it in/out better.

I've used panel prep (think Car Pro Eraser) to get wax off of plastic trim. Believe it or not, I've had the best luck with a pink pencil eraser. I've seen heat guns used to restore plastic trim, but it is, at best, a temporary fix.

I’ll try the eraser tomorrow since I have it, I’m not going to use a heat gun route due to potential damage that I’m prone to causing. Thank you

I either do it early in the morning or on an overcast but not rainy day. I’ve also gone to a self serve wash and done it in one of the bays there (not the ceramic but everything else).

While it would be hilarious, I wouldn’t recommend it. I neglected to say I don’t hit those places unless they’re empty. I forget people don’t keep the same hours I do.

I learned a lesson the hard way several years ago. With people using the other bays there tends to be a shitload of sand etc flying around in the air. This lead to the War Machine’s first paint correction when I got home and saw all the microscratches I’d introduced.

I've gotten some very dirty looks and some "WTF is all that stuff you have?" when I've shown up with my own buckets filled with wash solution/wash mitts. I can not imagine what would happen if I broke out the clay bar, cordless polisher, pads, panel wipe and a coating kit

Did my first ever prep on a coating job strictly rinseless. Couple of buckets, rinseless sponges, and a lot of time. Car came to me pretty clean as was. The wheels were a pain in the ass however. No iron remover...just a real good claybar session that lasted almost 2 hours. 10/10 do not recommend...wash the conventional way folks lol.

Yeah, that is exactly what I did. Found a day with little traffic at the Self-Serve wash near me. Packed my buckets and knocked out a lot of work
