Looks like a bunch of retrax installs on here... Have you been having water issues? I am struggling with water on mine. Had it professionally installed onto my 22 trd pro at a premier local installer who has been great and has tried 3 times to address the issues. I'd be fine with some drips, but I'm talking streams of water pouring in the sides. Retrax suggests concentrating on making sure the rails have a minimum 2 degree rise, but given the brackets for the tundra tie down rails there is no reliable way to make that adjustment and the brackets just pull the siderails back to level or even dipped in to the bed.

I really want to like and keep this cover, and really wanted crossbars with a functional/opening bed cover. But given the effort put into this cover and the amount of water I think it is time to start looking for other solutions. I'm really disappointed.

 

I have a couple questions for those with the Truxedo Sentry/Sentry CT.

1. Looks like there are two versions, one for trucks “with” deck rails (like ours) and one for trucks without. When selecting “with deck rails” it says that it does not come with quick release. Does this make it a pain to completely remove?

2. Are the bed rails still useable with the OEM plastic tie down points?

3. When paired with the Elevate TS rails, can you still use the Rails with OEM plastic tie down points? I don’t see why not, but have got conflicting info. Thanks!

 

That’s insane!…I get zero water other than a minimal amount at tailgate seams…and it’s not much at all…do you have pics of your clamps?…I’ve installed all 4 of mine with no issues like that at all, that “2 degree rise” can be hard to achieve but it’s doable…I basically push down on rails on top of bed sides as hard as I can while positioning clamps and kinda pushing up to tighten em down, if that makes sense…hard to explain in txt, post a couple pics of your clamps and I’ll see if I can help ya!

 

Did you ever get any answers on the Weathertech? I have watched a few videos including non-sponsored real users and it looks pretty good. Trying to figure out all this stuff before I take delivery of my new truck.

 

Here's a picture of the clamp in the worst performing corner (rear passenger side). Many things have been tried, pushing down on the edge while pulling up, shims behind the nylon adjustment screws, makings sure the canister is supported while mounting the rails. These were all done by professional installers with the guidance of the manufacturer.


I'm of the opinion that it is a design issue, not install issue. If the channels the bearings roll in needs a rise, it should be built into the rail. Or, where the side rail attaches to the canister it should attach with the rise built in there instead of attaching square. Or, the brackets that hold the rail should attach securely to both side of the rail and have an adjustment bolt/screw in how it is mounted to the utility rails that provides controlled adjustment of the angle.

You can also see the c-clamp should have more clearance over the small ridge below the nylon screws, because if the side rail is appropriately far from the side of the truck the clamp hit that part of the side rail and pulls the side rail down (eliminating the rise). In order to avoid that contact the side rail would be need to moved out farther, but then the rails would not be parallel and the problem whack-a-mole out in other ways.



As a result of all of this the channel (where the water collects) is basically level. Then the bottom of the aluminum rail of the cover is right on the small lip, breaks the surface tension in that spot, and the water just starts to pour in. This happen when the truck is just parked level (most parking spots) with static water on the cover (not high pressure water at the rails or anything like that).

I don't want to be too negative about it, but I do think I've given it a solid chance and it just doesn't seem to fit my truck.

 

Yea absolutely, I can definitely see why you’re ready to throw in the towel!…only thing I’m noticing is the clamp, I would try one more thing…I have my clamps up against underside of the rails, literally push them up and tighten them down while holding them up against underside…I can see a little gap (looks like it anyway, a little hard to tell in pic)…just trying to think of anything to help ya, I’ve installed 4 of these covers on 4 different trucks of mine and never had that issue…but totally get why you’d be ready to trash it!…I can post a pic of my clamps if ya want, but I included the “small gap” that I’m referring to on your clamp…you can even call me if ya want, I’m happy to try to help (and no, I have no affiliation with Retrax….lol)…it’s kinda hard to explain in txt, but let me know if I can help in any other way, good luck man!

 

Thanks for the suggestion! I re-installed making sure those mounting brackets are right at the top of the channel in the side rail, while again pushing & "twisting". It is actually surprisingly better than I have seen so far (almost to the point of what I originally expected). Thanks!

I actually crawled into the bed and had my wife close me in while doing a water test and noticed a couple things. Most of what is left is water streaming in at the back corner. I can probably manage that, despite it being worse than I expect.


The more surprising thing to me that I realized while in there are that there are a handful of panels (maybe 4 or 5) that have little screws in them and one of them in particular is leaking a steady drip from the screw (this is towards the end, but before the side rail). I've also noticed a few scrapes on the underside of a couple of the panels that I wouldn't expect in a brand new cover. Sorry for the quality of these screenshots... the videos are far more compelling, but don't share to the forum well.


Now I'm kind of wondering if I just got a lemon in addition to the design challenges.

 

No prob, glad it helped ya!…I agree, looking at those pics it definitely looks like something isn’t right from the factory…I would send them those, especially the pic of the screw leaking!…I’ve never seen that before, and that’s clearly not anyones fault…that looks like poor quality control on their end…hopefully they’ll realize something isn’t right and take care of ya!

 

I'm thinking you got a defective cover. From what I have seen several places online, I am surprised Retrax isn't shipping you a new cover; that is a ridiculous amount of leaking! I have the same cover on my truck and agree with you, I think the rail design definitely needs a redesign. I can run my truck through a car wash and get only a few drips on the sides from high pressure water. The only thing that puzzles me is I often get 5-6 drips in the middle of the bed. I assume these are running across the bottom of the cover from the tracks. Nevertheless, nothing compared to what you are experiencing.

My patience would be well past done if I was you. Retrax would have a cover on the way to me or someone would be getting that one back! The Retrax is the fourth cover I've had on my truck, LOL. I guess I'm hard to satisfy. Good Luck!

As stated in my previous reply, I installed the tonneau temporarily whilst waiting for my Leer to arrive. Welp, it has arrived, which means I have a gently used tonneau cover for sale. I'm in San Diego and would entertain a meet anywhere between San Diego and Los Angeles, off of the 405 freeway... If in LA, let me know where. Cheapest it can be had for new is $325, shipped with tax (I paid $400). How about $250. Sorry, I wont ship it.

 

Guys: I will freely admit that I have not read ALL 30 pages in this thread but have read a bunch of posts. I have also looked online and I think have boiled it down to 3-4 options for a Tonneau Cover and wanted to ask y'alls opinion. I think any of the these would be a good option but y'all have more experience with this than me. The ones I am considering are:

BakFlip G2 Aluminum
BakFlip F1 Reinforced Composite
BakFlip MX4 Aluminum I see a lot of these mentioned
Weathertech Aluminum

This will be 2022 1794 MGM with Crew Cab and 5.5' bed.

All I can add is I tried a F1 and it leaked really bad across all the seams. Bak customer service was great and sent me a second one; unfortunately, it leaked just as bad. I fully understand tonneau covers aren't water tight, but any cargo in the back would be soaked since they both leaked all the way across.

 

Thanks for the input. Was it across the seals front and back or all the way around? Do you think it was bad seals or maybe just a bad design? Was it a difficult install?

Ok got the @Weathertech cover today. Install was pretty straightforward. I like it but the real test is when it rains, but the no water drains keeping water out of bed seems beneficial. I wish it didn’t have raw aluminum edges. Seems well built.

 

Looks good. Did you have to remove the bed rails? Pics of the rails and clamps please?
Do you think a careful paint of the raw edge with black would work?

 

I’ll take pictures tomorrow of the bed rails. You pick option with or without. You can still use them with cover installed. Mounting clamps use the rail for installation.

 

Would you be willing to take one for the team and use the hose instead of waiting for rain?

Haha yeah ok. I did wash it today and some water got in but not much. But then I realized I didn’t have the cover lined up right when I put it back on in a hurry. First test inconclusive.

 

Mine has held up pretty well. There was barely any water in the bed after a rain storm one night. I also took it through the car wash and intentionally checked the bed afterward and only saw a tiny amount of water in the very front of the bed.

 

I live in SW Fla where it rains, literally, every afternoon and have the same Retrax on my 1794 and she stays bone, and I mean bone dry.

I know they're pricy, but man you get what you pay for. Highly recommend.

 

Now that they've been out there in the wild for a while, does anyone have an updated opinion on the BakFlip MX4 on their 2022 short-bed? I'm just about to bite the bullet on this one and wanted any last minute opinions, praise, or horror stories.

I do plenty of travel and fill that bed to the max with luggage and such, therefore need a reliable, well-fitting cover. Had good luck with a surface mounted tri-fold on my 2013 SR5 but really want a higher end cover worthy of a TRD Pro.

I’ve had my MX4 for several months now…initially I was a bit pissed because there was some leakage up front and at both rear quarters. I replaced the foam strip that went across the front with one that was a bit thicker (AutoZone) and added a few pieces where it joined the sides. Around the rear I put TruXseal Universal Tailgate Seal (1703206) Universal Fitment from Amazon. This totally sealed the tailgate area from dust as well as rain and I’m very satisfied.

 

Thx for the tips. Planning to go with the MX4 and was concerned about this. You would think the manufacturer would make these improvements. I like the Weathertech too but like the design of the MX4 better.

 

BakFlip MX4 drain tube pics please. Hey guys and gals. I just put a deposit on a 1794 and when it comes in plan to put a BakFlip MX4 on it. Can someone please post pics of where you put the drain tubes through the bed? Thx.

 

I found a couple of videos on YouTube and the backflip mx4 is identical trip the OEM tonneau. The one pro I see is that it comes with drain tubes that for the holes that are already drilled in the bed. Meaning, the stain tubes are the same size as the holes and no additional drilling required.
