I don't agree with locking up in this case, actually. Maybe some of that has to do with how eager some were to lock me up when I was a mischievous teenage skate grommet. No point in ruining this teenager's life with a lengthy incarceration on something that'll likely be wiped anyway due to likely landing on his juvie record.

I think the perfect punishment in this case is restitution for everyone injured, 10 yr license revocation so HE has to start riding bikes to get around, and a couple thousand hours of community service, where 50% of the work needs to go towards bike-related initiatives, wehther that be working in bike co-ops, doing gopher work for cycling advocacy groups, or otherwise.

Make the punishment fit the crime. Sucks these people were wronged when the parents are probably dicks who taught him to hate anyone on two wheels, make him pay several times over to the same community he assaulted.

I like where your mind is going on this. It still scares me to be next to these little diesel dicks at a stoplight in my Jeep with the doors/top off cause I’m just waiting for them to roast me with their exhaust and laugh about it.
    It’s not funny or cool….

now on the other side I HATE when cyclists use the road and ‘act like a car’ and then get to intersections and blow though lights or stop signs. Pisses me off. Be one or the other.

    Nice work @oscardog86
Is that bumper setup custom? I really like the simple and minimalist look of it.

Yea it is, I had it welded up from a friend before I had ever tried welding myself. Now that ive been welding for a year or two I felt like adding a swing out to it.

I also like the simple look of the round tube and keeping it minimal! Thanks for the comment

I love the fold-down shelf element. That's super clever, as long as a drunk friend doesn't start cooking on it while a filled gas can is still attached

Not sure how much weight those hingest would hold, would it maybe be worthwhile to have a temporary tensioner line to help distribute the weight that's on the shelf, maybe a braided line from top to bottom or a folding cabinet hinge like where the yellow lines are, something detachable, maybe something that hooks into an existing hook/hole/provision on the table surface? I only say this because it doesn't look like a piano hinge for the bottom is an option, and it never hurts to distribute load across two/three fail points.

Oh yea, i dont know if you saw in my first post, but i have braided line with crimps coming in the mail. Definitely gonna be adding that to help with handling more weight. Also that will let me swing the table out away from the tailgate if i want and still be able to handle the weight of beers, a stove or some food!

Yea, definitely gonna make sure that gas can is removed before I cook anything! Also, might add a back to the table so it helps block wind when im cooking on the table. Thanks for the feedback!

Totally! Frankly, you may have a viable, sellable add-on product on your hands here if you could get this done as a prototype, then patent and contract someone to build it. My only concern would be longevity of the main, single pivot point after extended use and how to address that. I'm really bad with figuring out fabrication stuff like that, so I usually end up reaching out to a friend of mine who does it for a living if I need input. Fabricators are a special breed, I'm definitely not one...

@Tundra2 Yea i just drilled a hole in my bumper and inserted a thick walled sleeve of tubing in the hole and welded it to the bumper. Then I ran a 1 inch thick Grade 8 Bolt through that to make the pivot. I tack welded the bolt in so it doesnt move when tightening the nut but I can cut the weld away if I ever need to remove the bolt.

Also the sleeve that slips over the bumper, the part that the swing out is connected to has oil filled bushings that fit perfectly over the bolt to take out any play and also keep it swinging smoothly.

We'll see how it all works out when I have the gas and water can installed and filled up. I went with a 2 gal gas can, and will get a 2 gal water can so shouldnt be too much weight. When its closed and the latch is clamped down it feels pretty strong and when i pull on the swing out the hole truck shakes, so should be good to go!

I actually go the idea from some offroad company that used a 1 inch Grade 8 bolt and a sleeve inserted into the bumper. Seems the company isnt around anymore and I couldnt find their kits anywhere. Either the idea didnt work or the company is no longer around? I guess we'll find out how well it works but I think it should be fine. They were also marketing it as a tire swing out so mine has less weight than a big oversized tire.

I think you're on point with adding a back. I bet another sheet of aluminum would be good to block wind and separate gas from back of stove. Especially if you setup a coleman you would have double. But I would still be a little nervous with a gas can that close.

Yea I think adding a back will work really well. I hate when there is wind blowing on the stove and im trying to cook. I have a nice thin piece of scrap aluminum handy that will be perfect for a wind blocker.

But I agree, Ill still be nervous cooking with a gas can attached so Ill always be removing that when it comes to cooking. Although the rotopax would work as good wind blockers all by themselves, but rather be safe than sorry.

So…rolled under the truck just now to check to make sure the bushings weren’t torn from the alignment and I see this….

Now is it just my bad mojo or can a mechanic hit a CV boot to make this happen?

    895A0997-A8B2-46C4-9D40-6368B520F223.jpg

    I’m thinking just my bad luck…FML :(

Do I need to replace a seal or the whole CV boot?

Are you talking about how the diff looks wet with fluid or something else? The axle looks fine.

Yep. Looks like diff fluid; that’s why I’m wondering if it’s a seal that integrated into the boot.

edit: looking online it seems like a front diff seal that can be replaced? I’ll have to check the FSM and see what sort of labor is involved in ripping it apart.

If it's leaking diff fluid it would be an issue with that seal you mention, not the axle. We've discussed before how one of the axle seals can be tricky(passenger side) because it can be driven in too far, or too little.

The actual job isn't that bad. Just pull the axle and tap the new seal in.

We talked about it in this thread.

Perfect time to do the ECGS bushing then. The seal on that side is easy.

Can you actually feel oil, a drip?
I was thinking maybe it’s just overspray from a penetrant you used while doing all that work recently

Nah, it’s definitely on the bottom side only. No overspray. Although I have two nice wet spots on the asphalt from the rust penetrant. Time to toss on the kitty litter.

Forgot how fast it works, after applying and moving on shit was already starting to turn.
This shit works faster than Ospho, my guess is it stronger as you need to rinse it off or it'll eat paint. Ospho you can leave on indefinitely.

I took a look at some videos on the install of a cv axle. How does anyone measure 173 ft-lbs for the hub axle nut when putting it back on?

My torque wrench only goes to 150 ft-lbs. Or do people here just count ugga-duggas? ;)

You can "Use" mine; Digital up to 250 lbs. Something about owning "Large Car's" made me purchase this :hattip:

Autozone list the 250 lbs torque as a loaner here in Florida, hopefully same thing up in Boston..
