What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I was leaning towards paint then everyone on the First Gen Tundras Facebook group said paint isn't the way to go; That it would just cause more problems later.

 

Why is that? You don’t live in the rust belt. You just need a rust converter treatment prior to paint.

In my case, I wire wheeled mine and coated it in two coats of semi-black POR-15 after pre-treating it. It’s held up well since 2012.

 

I 2nd the POR-15 suggestion. Great product but expensive.

 

I'm a little weird about spraying topicals onto anything made of cloth/fabric. Just lifting my seat belt out of the way and spraying the plastic it rides across a couple of times with drying in between pretty much resolved my light retraction woes.

 

That’s still indirectly applying it to the seat belt fabric since it rolls over it and picks it up even when dry.

 

Topical transfer vs. full-on soak. Achieves the same effect with topical onto the plastic surface the belt glides across. Same concept you find with treadmill maintenance - you spray the platorm your running belt slides across, not the belt.

I'd be worried about what nasty shit you're sealing into your seatbelt by spraying directly w/silicone, it'd be difficult to get dirt, dead skin, mold spores, etc. out again after saturating with silicone.

 

On both sides I was able to get the old bolts out, and the front bolt was longer than the rear bolts. Really weird.

 

That diff breather looks a little crusty. I would recommend testing it and extending the breather up to the tail light or inside the gas filler door.

Even though it was a million degrees in my garage this holiday weekend, I tried my hand at a swing out on my bumper for a water container, gas can and a fold down table. Its coming along alright so far though.

I wire wheeled the rust off of mine. Sprayed a coat of primer and then painted. POR-15 probably would have been better though honestly.

It made mine slide really nice but as far as long term effects I have no idea.

Absolutely, I love seeing other peoples designs. Ive had several iterations of setups back there and this is the latest one that works the best for me. Its fun building it up to really make it your own and learn over the camping trips what you need and what you dont.

I whipped one up one day after we sold our van. It's really basic, but works well enough for the short time I'll be using it.

 

I need me a 175-200 Amp I thinks. Would love to do a pulley upgrade to a new 150 Amp denso unit but haven't researched enough into belt sizes, pros and cons, etc.

 

Looks like I’ve got to get the 2003 brake caliper pins and not 2002…time to exchange. More delays. Sigh.

 

I’m not sure if I’ll get a good enough grip with a crescent wrench to help break free the 18 mm nut from spinning on either side (drivers or passengers) of the Moog stabilizer links where it contacts the LCA. Hoping I don’t have to buy new there as well. Mo’ problems.

I've never removed one with any rust without breaking them.

I have those same sliders on my truck and really like them.

 

They may work fine, just stick out a tad. Just check spoke clearance on the wheels.

 

They told me to go ahead and exchange it. The 2003 calipers are 1/2” shorter from what I’m told.

They already know there was a changeover in break pad sizes during that year due to a change in caliper size.

 

I've done brakes on 3 tundras. They never come with those pins and I had to cut them out/destroy them on 2 trucks. So when I did the brakes on my truck I went ahead and ordered new ones with the brakes. Low and behold the pads came with new pins. So then I had two sets of pins. Guess I'll hold on to the extra for next time.

 

Im guessing there is frame drilling and or some welding involved?
