The factory ECU won't go into PE -power enrichment - until 80% throttle, I believe. When mine was tuned I think they lowered it to 40%. You can see it get rich on the wideband when you hit that level.

The knock sensors probably saved you when you were towing. They are very conservative.

 

question. does "Open Loop" indicator correlate to Power Enrichment?

 

I think OL is just the ECU ignoring the O2 sensors and PE is the ECU throwing in extra fuel according to certain calculation tables to cool the cats.

 

Sorta, Open Loop or Closed loop has to do with the truck not being up to operating temp initially. When it is cold it isn't running off of the data from the O2 sensors. Once it warms up and goes into Closed loop it uses the O2s to determine the amount of fuel needed. When the ECU goes into PE mode it switches from Closed Loop to running off the programmed values in the fuel table(s) rather than from the data supplied by the O2s. The ECU tries to keep everything at Stoich but the custom tune overrides that in PE. It is way more complicated than that, but you get the basics....right?

 

The ECU goes into OL during most off throttle/deceleration situations too.

 

Yep, unless the tune is changed most vehicles turn off the injectors on decel. The wideband just shows - - - - - when that happens. There is a "tuner" term for it but I can't remember what it is.

 

Got my powertrax LSD delivered today. I know this was touched on earlier, but I find it amusing how on the box it says use whatever oil you want including synthetics. Then I scroll through the manual and it’s says synthetic oil is not recommended. I feel like I’m reading a White House press briefing.

 

so I'm pondering this....back to IAT heat mitigation

installing an electric fan to cool the intercooler heat exhanger....but...only when my speed drops below, say, 5mph.

there appears to be room behind the front grill for a slim mount fan.

I reckon at speed, there is not much we could do to mitigate the heat.

I'm pondering this because my heat delta only goes up when I sit still.


would the fan hinder flow at speed?
do these fans pull crazy amperage?

 

Do you not think the stock fan is moving enough air? You're gonna need a hell of a fan to make any difference I think. The issue I believe is from the engine bay in general heat soaking, and not airflow through the radiator. There's airflow, but there's just not enough air leaving the engine bay like driving around.

 

I think the stock fan is fine.
the only time my delta increase is when I stop.
I was thinking if I could get more air moving across the radiator at a standstill, I could mitigate some of the excess soak.

I doubt we could ever get the IAT delta under 25-30 degrees.

sitting at a light or in slow traffic - I'm easily ~40+ degree delta.


at the end of the day....i see no performance difference at all the different temps. It's just been a while since I modified something & the itch needs a scratch.

 

Don't forget that regardless how isolated the radiator and intake are and how much clean air they're getting --- you have a supercharger sitting on top of an engine and crammed into a metal box. That's a lot of heat. If you turn your truck off and pop the hood, you can't even leave your hand on the blower housing (or any other part of the engine). Regardless where the intercooler inside the supercharger is, the air is getting heated a lot and sitting in an oven.

 

Swapping the mechanical crank fan on my E46 M3 did help a lot with temps, but that engine runs hot regardless. I still need, and have been waiting on backorder for like 8 months now, a vented hood for it. I have it set so that the fan still runs even with the car is off cause the radiator gets HOT (within spec tho)

 

Marketing vs Engineering.

I'm running stock fluid, it's the quietest and I haven't had any issues, you will love how taking off at turn just go, instead of traction control light kicks in.

Are you doing gears at the same time?

 

Vented hood for our rigs is something I think would help pull that engine bay heat out. I might do this down the road.

 

I've been toying with the idea of cutting some air inlet holes where that fake air vent is right above the grill. And then doing some reverse/inverse (opening facing windshield) hood louvers so air exits out. doubt i'll do any cutting on this truck though

 

The other option is to route/push air out of the wheel wells. Not sure how much it will help and what you are exposing by removing the liners.

 

Currently no liners here due to aftermarket glass. This exposes the intake hole passenger side, no bueno in rain ask me how I know lol

 

I've removed the liners on my past two off road vehicles. The supercharged Tacoma, and the Jk. While it does help a little, I don't think it helps enough. TBH I just like being able to look at the shiny headers with those off lol

 

I’m very excited to have it installed for sure. I am not 100% decided on gears but I’m leaning toward not unless you guys with 5.29s prove to be significantly faster than me with the Dragy. I’m only running 33s and don’t feel the need to go larger at this time, granted I constantly change my mind on 2 things….tire size and exhaust.

 

That's probably because most Synthetics have some kind of friction additive. I run Motul Sythentic gear oil it's the only synthetic that you can get with zero friction additives, love it and have had great results with both my ARB lockers and my Powertrax

You best get out there and do it then so I can make a decision on gears! While I won’t be surprised if you’re quicker, I do think you will find the dragy to be more of a heartbreaker than anticipated.

 

Bro don't fucking tell me that now that I've ordered it maybe I'll do a run and then return it we'll see when Thursday rolls around. Do a test up the hill and then drive down to where I apparently got 4.4s and see if I can replicate that.

 

We should've just bought one unit and sent it to each other lol

 

Dude I honestly had that thought too hahaha. I actually sent my HP Tuner module to Downy before my trip for the same reason, no point in multiple hardware for something I'll use once every few months at most.
