Thanks SB95! The appearance of your truck's stance and tires is really, really good. I think that 285/65R20 is probably one of the most perfect with zero rub or adjustment necessary even with mudflaps. 295/65R20 is sweet but apparently requires some modifications for some. Same with 35X12.5R20. I am going to compare 35X11.5R20 along w/your tire size, and I still kind of like the 295/60R20, but it has a bit more of a 'street racer" look to me compared with your 285/65, which is clean, mean, off-road machine. Awesome! And thanks for your spacer info, is that for both front and back? And lol re: your wife's thoughts on your Lunar Rock! Take my word for it, yours is awesome (I think that both our "greens" in our 3rd gen models are fantastic! :)

I only needed a spacer on the front. I initially asked for a 1” on the back but they said it didn’t need one. I may have them do one later just so I don’t look backwards when towing.

First purchase after buying my Tundra was the Talon's Garage Catalytic Converter Shield. It is awesome and I received it really quickly. Install was straightforward even under the truck with tires on, holding everything up with my knees! I couldn't get the last passenger seat second from the front bolt to thread properly. I have just ordered the front (white) TRD Pro skidplate and will reattempt to install the Talon along w/front skid bolts once that arrives.

One more thing. I think the TRD Sport has a slightly lower front stance (-1/2”) than the Offroad so you may only need a 2” level. I’d just take it to a quality shop to see.

Another factor with the tire install is that I only have 6.5" of clearance left in my garage! So I need to be careful as I do intend to continue to park inside!

The black exhaust tip was a super easy install and I am really happy with the appearance.

The emblem overlay was also incredibly easy to install and made a huge difference in the appearance. Along with the black exhaust tip and the TUNDRA lettering on the tailgate, it gave the truck a "night" appearance (except for the mustache, rear tailgate panels, door handles, tailgate latch and window trim lol :) But I like the contrast and no longer plan to try to color match everything. I'm embracing the differences of the Limited, she is totally awesome.

At first I thought I wanted to change the front grille for the TRD Pro "heritage" grille. But now with the Red Decal in the TRD location I think the appearance of the Limited TRD offRoad is awesome.

I made this chart for my research comparing Toyo with Falken, Nitto and BFG. My main criteria was that they be 3 snowflake certified, and in the sizes 35X11.5R20, 285/65R20, or 295/60R20. This was mainly because I need great snow traction, and I want the tires to fit w/o a lift or spacers etc. I could argue that 295/65/20 would fit no problem, but I want to stay sub-35". Any errors in this chart are my own.

Although now I’m looking at 295/65R20 BFG KO2 and it’s only 35.1x11.8, it should fit… it’s heavier (66lbs) but it has a whopping 4080 max load. I like that the BFGs all indicate made in USA, even though I like the appearance of some other tires such as the Recon Grapplers and Falkens more. I’ll be comparing pics of the 295/65R20 with 285/65R20

Hi ELiDirtTundra! Thanks for your post and your question! Tires and lift have been the hardest decision for me with my truck. I went with the 285/65R20 Falken Wildpeaks and sent them back, from my research it seems like that size Falken are made in the PRC.

Just based on the numbers I really want to go with a Toyo 285/65R20. Less tire weight, better speed and weight ratings. They have been really difficult for me to find. The only other tire I'd go with is the Toyo 35X11.5R20 but they weigh (a lot) more and have less speed and weight rating. Is there any other advantage to the inch-flotation rating over metric, do they look a lot better?

I have decided to pair the Toyos (either 285/65R20 or 35X11.5R20) with the black anodized Westcott 3/1 lift. Re: the Westcott, there too I'm stating to doubt myself (probably reading too many reviews!). I am not sure whether I should continue w/the Westcott plan, or go with changing the shocks to Bilstein (I have been happy w/the 5100s on my Sequoia).

I had thought that going w/the TRD offroad setup meant I didn't have to change shocks, don't we have Bilsteins already? (Let me guess, the red shock bodies aren't as good as the 5100s perhaps...) The OEM Toyota lift and the other "big boy" lifts (Icon etc) are a major investment and I don't think I require that much, I do want the ride to be really good however.

Bottom line is that, right now I'm going w/the Westcott 3/1 and Toyo (either of the two listed above). I'm not sure (if I stick w/the Wescott) whether I'll do the full 3/1, or remove the shim on the front and go 2/1, or even 2/0. I'm looking for a subtle and BA lift nothing too high or extravagant. I would be grateful for any thoughts or advice re: any of the above. Thanks again ELiDirtTundra!

Hello Taikowaza thanks for the reply. Toyos are nice! And there are a lot of Westcott 3/1 set ups around the forum, youtube, facebook and there seems to be more of a hit instead of a miss. I do have Westcott’s leveling kit but I would wait until I get new tires put in and see how I like the stance before I decide to have it installed. I’ve decided to go with Nitto Recon Grappler 275/65R20 116H as I wanted to stay under E rated tires.
The OEM lift kit are above my budget for the parts and to have it installed, so will stick with either leveling kit or the 3/1 set up.
The spare tire is 265/70R18 Michelin LTX Trail, are you planning of replacing that as well? If not, are you going to remove it so as not to carry a dead weight or leave it as is? I’m planning of taking it out but I don’t know how the back will handle because of weight distribution.

My TRD sport came with bridgestone duelhers. Some come with a yokohamoa geolander, but they look like street tires.

Hey! Wanted to see how your experience has been since your last post here? Do you think the lift was necessary for either the 35x11.5R20 or the 285/65R20 Toyos? Love to not have to lift the truck so it still fits in the garage.

Would you change your decision based on the last couple of months?

My Canadian Limited TRD Offroad came with 265/70/R18 wheels and Michelin Trail tires. I have ordered some Toyo AT3 295/60/R20 tires and Flow Formed Fast Wheels, Should be here this week. I also ordered a 1.75" RC levelling kit. I am hoping my long truck looks a bit shorter :).

I really like the red strip on the steering wheel and the red shifter.

I bought Toyo OC 285/65/20 at Town Fire Tire. Guys in NH gave me a great price at $1500 out the door and no state tax. Had my dealer install when I picked up my truck. Also installed RC level and Borla spacers at the same time.

Love the discussion on tire size. I'm giving serious consideration to 285/65/20. Now the only question is which tires?

Wildpeak AT3 are OEM on some Tundra models, so it's at least not going to be a problem on 3rd gen Tundras. My 1794 came with Wildpeak AT3-a, that's the off road/highway combo looking tire. It has the advantage of having a nice straight grove either side of center which is good for shedding water in the rain. From what I've read, the more blocky the tire is, read lack of that left and right straight groove, the more easily it will hydroplane because it can't shed the water easily.

So....with looks aside, what do y'all think are good wet traction yet better off road than the rather crappy Wildpeak AT3-a tires? Oh, those AT3-a have a pretty low load rating at 2450 pounds (I recall), which is at max pressure of 51 pounds and the Tundra door sticker says to normally run at 35 pounds, so these tires are really stressed under heavy towing load at 35psi. I think they should be aired up to 45 or so for heavy towing to avoid exceeding their load capability. The larger 285/65/20 of just about any tire will take care of that problem.

    Thoughts?

I’ve been a long term BFG guy but switch to Toyo OC 285/65/20. So far I’m really liking them. Relatively quiet and look good, slightly more street look IMO versus an off-road-mud tire. The BFG is slightly more aggressive looking IMO but the Toyo look good. The biggest negative I’ve had over the years with BFG was the road noise around 45-50k, they are loud. Basically, the last year on former trucks would be louder. The BFG did ride a little rough too but, so did the Gen 2 trucks. I did run a higher PSI 45-50 which probably contributed to great ware. Generally, I would get 69-65k out of the tires, then sell while still inspectable.

With all that said would I buy BFG again, 100% Yes.

Long term verdict on Toyo, we’ll see…

On your stock tundra, did you add a level kit in front to get those Nittos on?

That tire size will fit these trucks just fine without a level or spacers

No spacers. The tires are not 12.5 wide…closer to 11.5”.
