    Hi

does any one know if you can remove oil filter without draining oil pan from 5.7 tundra ?

just changed oil but have leak from
Filter, need to remove filter cap to change o ring

any tips on how to remove cap is greatly appreciated

The housing itself comes out fine but the grey cap is jammed to the housing

If you mean the cap at the bottom of the housing?? You will need to tighten the plastic housing and try to jerk the cap loose. if the housing turns with the cap then lightly overtighten the housing.. then go back to the cap and try to loosen the cap by tappinh the ratchet handle for leverage.. If I'm understanding what you're saying...

If you're talking about the cap the turns the housing you may need to tap it from all sides with the handle of the ratchet, atleast this how I've done it over the years..

I've had to check the o-ring 2 weeks ago and I drained the filter rolled it down just enough to check and retightened it when I made sure I had replaced it.. added half a quart after and checked over the next couple of days.

    Hope this helps some.

Thanks a bunch for that info!

I was able to get the cap of the housing holding the housing down as hard as I could with an oil filter wrench and the highest setting in 3/8th impact wrench and it broke free
it was way to over tightened last time

But anyways after breaking it free and putting in new o rings I still have the same leak that seems to be from the cap

I’ve pulled the damn filter housing out 3 times now pitting new o rings and it leaked each time
the housing and cap looks fine I don’t see any cracks where the oil could leak from
But I’m probably just gonna order an aluminum housing ok Amazon for 20 bucks and put that in and see if the leak stops
Probably the easiest/cheapest thing to do

Maybe you're putting o-ring in the wrong thread. There's a channel that is made for the o-ring. You really shouldn't even tighten the housing a lot because o-ring does all the leak proofing.

Do you have a hairline crack somewhere from previous frightening? It could've been damaged by heavy hand last time.

Yeah I’ve tried 3 different o rings and made sure they were in the channel desjunges for them

they definitely weren’t on the wrong thread cause I just pulled it out 3 times and checked but it must be a very small crack I can’t see or something
For only 13 bucks I’ll get a aluminum one on Amazon and see if the leaks stop and then I’ll know if this plastic housing currently on it is bad

I’m thinking it must that since I didn’t have this issue the past few times I changed the oil

I’ll update here in 2 days once bezos delivers the new filter housing

I would highly recommend buying the OEM Toyota housing instead of a cheaper aftermarket one, it might save you from having the same problem. Good luck.

there is a figure 8 gasket that you may want to get as well.. that's probably your failure, but idk, I can't see it.. its 50cents online, I got it for my 93 Lexus which applies to the Tundra as well...FYI

Yeah that’s exactly what it was

Canceled the order for the cheap one and picked one up just now at Toyota for 52 bucks
more than online but got to test it today and definitely seems better quality

Used same o rings and no more leak

There must be some micro crack not really visible on the other plastic filter housing since there’s no more leak with the new one

the old filter housing wasn’t leaking at rest or if u take it out and fill with oil but once motor is on it starts leaking so must be the pressure pushing it out of small crack

does anyone else only drain around 5 quarts when they change oil on 5.7 ?

never seem to drain full 8 quarts every time change the oil

    Is that normal?

I just changed the oil and got about 7.4 quarts as expected. Maybe you had leaked the extra 2.4? You drained from both the filter and drain plug separately, right?

It looks like you still need to switch over the taller center support screen/tube from your old cap to the new cap. The Aluminum comes with a shorter one foe a different engine and the unsupported part of the filter element can colapse if you leave the shorter center screen/tube.

Yes, OP will definitely need to switch out the center tube in the oil filter housing with the tube from the old housing. OP, are you sure you are changing the oil while parked on level ground. You should be getting more oil out than 5 quarts.

Oh wow I wasn’t aware the shorter tube in filter housing made a difference

do you think it would be fine to leave until next oil change or will cause serious damage and should be done immediately ?

    it at least isn’t leaking

I’ll call Toyota and ask if they can check if the shorter tube is or isn’t compatible with the motor

would suck to have to take it out for 4th time but is what it is I guess

Also yeah the drain pan was drained separately before the removing the filter and was done on level ground but still didn’t even drain 5 quarts

in the pic is all the oil drained not even 5 quarts

The dipstick didn’t show it was that low before draining the oil to only get barely 5 quarts

It was dripping a decent amount from the filter housing before changing it but wouldn’t think lost 2 quarts through it

But at the same time the last 3 oil changes I don’t think I’ve ever filled more than a full 5 quart jug with the old oil not sure why keep draining less oil unless it might be burning since the motor looks dry and doesn’t look like it’s leaking from anywhere

I'm draining full(mad full) 5qt bottle and then a bunch of water bottles. Check the tailpipe, do a swab, does she look dark? (Mine us 4.6l btw, not 5.7)

Edit: one other thing, when you change oil and check level, do you check AFTER starting motor? Because if you only check before starting motor, all that space and filter is empty and after start, it will get filled up. That might be your extra 2 quarts that you maybe never added after checking after engine start?

I would definitely swap over the riser tube ASAP.

oil starvation is NOT something you want to risk... Especially on an engine this expensive to replace.

I would also start checking your oil level every couple weeks. There should be way more than 4 quarts draining from your sump.

I assume you are not draining the transmission thinking it's the motor oil.?

Just draining the filter won't spill THAT much oil. Shouldn't be too expensive to replace

Pretty sure it's just a one off for the OP. He's been draining and refilling so much due to this leaking fiasco, perhaps he overlooked the level one time and didn't fill her up.
