Payload = gross weight - curb weight

Also, notice the language on the door jamb: “Occupants and cargo should not exceed…” Driver is an occupant and is not included in the curb weight.

Curb weight is bone stock truck with all fluids filled (including the gas tank). This is why the bigger fuel tank counts more against payload. They’re accounting for 11.6 more gallons of fuel.

To clarify this a bit more: to pass the SAE towing standard that's been referenced previously in this thread (sorry, I can't remember the number), the vehicle has to tow the weight with a driver and one passenger (both assumed to weigh 150 lbs, I believe).

Well, I'm not much above that now, but have friends that are much bigger than me. It sucks Toyota couldn't build a truck with enough payload capability to safely carry 5 husky Americans and a cooler of beer. Think about it 5×250= 1250 - 150 = 1100. I'm pretty sure the sticker on my CM 4X4 shows 1150 before my steps and ReTrax cover. So even if it's me and 4 husky friends we may have to decide between one friend and the beer - who stays home? Draw straws?

Major disappointment. Toyota should be able to do better.

Also, out of curiosity, was this the OP's first thread?

    A bunch
Ram and Ford aren't much higher for their volume sellers, GM is only consistent one in the 2000 lb range. I know people want to shit on Toyota, but it's a half ton problem in general. If you want payload it up to a 3/4 ton, 1/2 tons are for getting groceries and the occasional towing.

You could make the same argument with another manufacturer. Say stated payload is 1500 on another brand 1/2 ton. Sounds great right? As soon as you take the same calculation you have (5×250= 1250 - 150 = 1100) then add a fiberglass cap on the back, you're at max again. It's just how it is.

In my shopping experience, GMC is only marginally better than the Tundra, and that's with a much smaller fuel tank. Ford with the aluminum body has the best payload. Again, just my experience comparing.

Poor Tundra gotta love how he zooms in the "Supercharged" badge at the end as if that's the only thing needed when towing something of this size lol

Kinda off topic question but what is the tongue weight (pardon my ignorance if that isn’t the correct term) on a smaller goose neck trailer? Does it exceed 1/2 ton truck payload capacity in general?

Tongue or pin weight of a gooseneck trailer that size (35-40’) is likely 1200-1500# or more. The way that one is loaded suggests a much higher pin weight. It’s got tandem single wheel axles, not duals, so it’s probably on the lower end for goosenecks that size. Definitely not half ton towable per the stickers. Definitely half ton towable based on the pic. Can VS should.

Speaking of towing laws - how about those salvage yards that drive 3, 4 or 5 cars daisy chained in a line and the lead tow vehicle will legit be a Chevy Cobalt pulling a line of Ford Escapes and Honda Civics. Used to see them on I70 between Western KS and Eastern CO all the time. Wonder what the nuances of those laws are.

What size trailer? This one is a lighter duty (still 12K lbs rating) and weighs in at 3040 lbs. Even if the pin weight is 22% it would be 668 lbs. The problem is when you load it up even 50% of its capacity.

    https://trailers2go4less.com/shop/c...trailers/currahee-82-x-18-gooseneck-trailers/

This is 1040 lbs empty. 24' lowboy. 22.5% pin weight. In this picture pin weight is ~3500 lbs loaded due to the boulders position on the trailer.

    rocks.jpg

This one is a little less at 1020 lbs. 28' lowboy. This one also doesn't have chain boxes or hydraulic jacks like ^^^.

    IMG_3442 2.jpg

In this picture, the rocks are heavy but due to having the longer deck and was able to position the boulders differently. Pin weight was ~2800-3000 lbs.

    boulders.jpg

This pic the pin weight was ~3400 lbs.

what’s gvw of your gmc? I had to move to Ford to get a higher gvw. Truck weight empty about 8000, gvw is 12,400. F350 crew cab long bed srw.

Honestly I didn’t have particular trailer in mind, it was more of a general curiosity. I don’t have any experience with a goose neck and was just wanting to educate myself.

There was an earlier video of a gray Tundra that everyone was saying was over payload and I wasn’t sure if that was with an empty trailer.

Thanks for those examples! My trailering experiences only come from my personal vehicles and pulling some bulldozers behind dump trucks while I was in college. The vast majority of my commercial experience is with straight jobs (class B over 26k) with no trailers.

That makes sense. My door sticker before the yellow sticker is 1270. - 300 for driver and pax, -50 for the WDH gives you 920 pounds. 10% of my towing capacity.
