Respectfully, I think you are wrong on both claims. First, people do make that claim on the internet all the time. "If you get into an accident while over the manufacturer's ratings, your insurance will deny your coverage." No, they won't. They can't. They can jack your premiums way up. But as long as it is accidental (torching your house to collect insurance money is willfully intentional/fraudulent), they have to pay it. Second, if you are negligent, they still have to pay. Almost all traffic accidents are due to negligence. They have to pay up to your limit of coverage. If you get shot robbing a bank, your health insurance has to pay your medical bills, as always, up to your limit of coverage.

First link: "...it may well be illegal to overload your vehicle." This is lawyer speak. It tells us absolutely nothing definitive. I'M NOT SAYING to do whatever you want. Exercise prudence and caution. The context is Tundras pulling loads that are within some of their numbers but not others. Ex: If I pull a 7k trailer well under both my tow rating and GCWR yet 600lb over payload, I'm not being negligent, reckless, or imprudent. The truck handles it just fine.

Second link: that's a different country on the other side of the world, the laws of which do not apply here.

Third link: this is a forum thread from 2006. Read post #6. His insurance broker told him "you are going to be covered, but likely not renewed." To be fair, this falls under hearsay.

Fourth link: Here's post #5 (@ColoradoTJ already quoted it):

"I use to sell insurance for State Farm. We had a insured that had an accident while towing. The truck was overloaded beyond the stated capacity. The trail [sic] lawyer for the injured party was able thru research and interviews. Establish that our insured both knowingly and willfully exceeded his trucks capacity. Long story short. State Farm denied his claim. I'm not saying they were right for doing that but they had just cause presented to them during the trial."​

Seems pretty incriminating, right? Like it's the smoking gun? Except the same guy backtracks it later in post #18:

"I was not privileged to all the court proceeding but the insured was denied coverage. Maybe I am speaking out of turn by even trying to relate this case with what the OP original question was. There obviously are some details missing and the case was complex. Thus the reason it went to trial. I probably shouldn't have brought it up since I did not know all the details. I just thought it was interesting that no money was ever paid out on this claim."​

All he knows is they didn't pay the claim. He completely made up the connection to the thread topic. Thus, this fourth link falls under internet hearsay as well.

Now back to why the tundra isn’t built to haul a 5th wheel.

 

Nothing accomplished? I wanted to see if others were dragging fifth wheels around and I did see others. They just wanted to avoid the scrutiny and BS and sent me private messages. I really expected lots of criticism pertaining to the strain on the transmission, stuff pertaining to the strain on engine components, but I forgot that we live in the Karen generation. Besides... Payload is 1530 so really I'm only over by the weight of the occupants and gear. That's only 800 pounds. Guess what... We don't and never wore those stupid paper masks either... Super hard core risk takers right?

 

If your payload is really 1530 on your door sticker then you have the holy grail magical unicorn tundra. Don’t forget to subtract the weight listed on the yellow sticker below it from your 1350 (being generous) payload listed on your factory label above it. That will give you the real payload number. You’re likely over 50% beyond your payload which is why your truck is bottoming out. We know you don’t care, but would love to see a picture of your door jamb sticker as proof of your payload claims. Think you’ll be surprised.

Thanks driver! With the exception of the first year of OTR... It's all been LTL. Out and back home every day. The first year is a little hard to nail down the miles because I was everywhere man like Johnny Cash. But for 26 years it's been back and forth like a yoyo! Easy to tally up the miles because of that. Boring at times but home for kids' football games.

 

I don't understand why we're STILL debating this. We all know what the Tundra was built for.

 

I'm still waiting for the picture of the payload sticker inside your driver's door that says this.

 

Impossible to alter payload with heavier duty springs or airbags. Payload figures are determined by many factors, vehicle weight, power, braking capability, frame strength, drivetrain and axle configuration, etc. But you already know this.

And you do you, haul/tow as heavy as you like, makes no difference to me. I'll just keep a distance when I see overweight or sketchy haul/tow situations on the road.

 

I get that this is the standard internet response, but I don’t think it’s true. Look at the Raptor, Silverado ZR2, and Power Wagon. Same frames, brakes, and axles as their base model cousins, same (or very similar) curb weight, but their soft suspension is at least a big part of what lowers their payload ratings significantly. I’m sure skid plates play a role as well. In the case of the PW, that is a 3/4T frame with the same HD axles as a 2500 Tradesman, but it is given a lower GVWR by almost 2000 lb. It is common knowledge that the rear leafs on the Tundra are extremely weak and soft. I think we can recognize that your truck is able to carry more safely if you beef them up. Other countries recognize this.

In Australia, one can beef up the rear suspension and get a certified higher rating for it. There’s no system like that here. There’s no system where private trucks pulling an RV need to be certified or weighed at all. I guess that would be the trade off—if we want this kind of officially-recognized change here in the US, we would be inviting more regulation and a higher level of govt scrutiny with private RV rigs.

Question, whats the size of the tundra rear bearings compared to a gm 10 bolt for example. Anyone seen?

You must not have read the entire thread. This has been a wealth of invaluable information.

To recap:

1) The Tundra can pull a space shuttle but cannot actually achieve the necessary velocity for "liftoff"
2) There is some kind of sticker on the driver door frame that "supposedly" indicates how much you can haul in your truck. OP is unfortunately unable to provide this information, although he can provide lots of cool pictures of his truck and trailer.
3) Putting helium in your tires will not increase payload but there is some indication that filling your cab with it might.
4) Regardless of this "payload sticker" the Tundra is overbuilt and Toyota is "sandbagging" because they don't want to drastically increase sales and have to start building thousands more trucks.
5) Because the Tundra is " overbuilt" and Toyota is "sandbagging" Tundra owners can tow as much as they want, unless your name is Karen, and then you can only tow 50% of the "door sticker" minus the weight of the actual door sticker, of course.
6) If you have an accident while towing anything above the "payload limit" you may be prosecuted and fined and face consequences up to and including being required to "moderate" Tundras.com

 

The Tundra can tow a 5th wheel, and was designed to do so just fine. Now, we can argue about how many (if any) 5th wheels exist that conform to the weight ratings. But nothing in the design of the Tundra suggests it is any more or less capable of towing a trailer based solely on the hitching platform.

 

Does anyone have the door sticker weight? Internet search produced no results.

 

Taken from Tundra.net Our rear ends are closer to 3/4 ton. Dealer tech told me the same thing when I bought the Tundra. This was one reason I bought it.

Looks like a Ford 10.25" rear end. It's probably equivalent to a Dana 70 or a GM 14 bolt, just like the Tundra's rear end.

And in case anyone wanted to know, our rear axle is 1.457" diameter and is a 36 spline shaft

 

I estimate my door sticker to weigh 0.0225 ounces.
