Access cab owners, what do you store in here?

I thought mine was cool (for my dbl cab); but the one you posted is really nice!

 

I know this post is old but how did you make this build? Looks good.

This was a Toyota / Bazooka sub option for the '04 - '06 dbl cab. I found this several years back as new old stock; called up Bazooka and they sold my the needed harness.

It actually sounds decent for what it is; doubt there are many around anymore.

JL still makes the Stealthbox for our trucks, no? I’ve seen a few used ones for sale over the last year or two.

 

Them and I'm pretty sure Q-logic still makes one.

Looks like JL quit making them for our gens. Used would be the way to get one. Q-logic still makes a box though.

I have the Q-customs 2x8. I'm just taking forever to get my amp wired up. I really wish we had an auxillary boot for passing cables thru the firewall. passing a 4awg wire thru the factory grommets was a no-go, I found no clean way to do it without cutting the boot, and I'm not willing to do it. I know how I'm going to go about it, but it's going to require a bit more effort up under the dash.

But I admit, I wouldn't have bothered with installing that Q-form box it if something like this existed for the 2000-2006 AC to replace the under-rear-seat cage that houses our ineffective storage cubbies. I think the main reason Q-Logic went with deleting the passenger cubby is because of the rise in the floor on the driver's side to make room for the gas tank?

So do you think its worth it to install a sub? Seems like the inability to easily access the engine bay from the cab could be a deal breaker.

Which HU do you have and did you bypass the OEM amp?

It's always worth it to install a sub, if you like good quality audio.

I have a JL HD900/5 pending install, but that specific amp calls for a 4awg power wire, which is ½" thick, and thus requires drilling the firewall in a sensible spot to run properly. A lot of people would probably just shove a fucking wire thru the OEM grommet, I don't do that shit, if you're going to run a wire from engine to cab, don't cut factory grommets and ram it thru, you're opening up a can of worms.

I'm running the Alpine W650 with amp bypass currently, and it's ample for all the mids/highs (6spk) in my access cab, it's louder with the modern Alpine head unit than the factory head unit and Fujitsu amp. Depending which stereo system you have in your DC, it may or may not be the same for you. The double cab drivers are 2ohm, IIRC, at least for the JBL/8spk system.

Alpine ilx-W650/W670/W770 all have the same integrated amp, and support the add-on KTA-450 and KTA-200M "powerpack" piggyback amp that mounts to the back of the head unit. That amp only requires a 12awg wire, which is so fucking easy to untape the driver's side harness going thru the grommet, run a 12ga wire thru, then re-tape it's almost silly.

If I weren't such an anal retentive asshole about my audio, this would've been a super-easy decision, which was the original decision I made, would be running either the W670 or 770 with the KTA-200M add-on, and run that little 12awg wire thru the existing factory grommet on the driver's side, fused within 18" of the battery, of course. That 12awg wire is like 0.1" thick with its sheath, super duper brainless pull-thru right next to the cab wiring harness. My 4awg wire is roughly 0.5" thick, which limits your options of where to pull it.

 

I did what shifty said not to do, and jammed a 1/0 through the drivers side grommet. But, I live in a very dry climate that never rains, and made the hole smaller than the wire so it still seals.

But yes, I'd recommend adding subs. Fuck that back seat.

 

No slight intended. I'm not fully against doing it that way because what you describe is correct if you're going that route - and I definitely considered it. If I had, I'd get a hole cutter (leather punch, basically), pop out the driver's side grommet as far as I could, then use a punch to make my hole thru the grommet with a piece of wood on the backside to catch it, hole being 1/16" smaller than my wire diameter, and push it thru.

Sounds like that's ballpark what you did, and you're not one of those animals who cuts a slit or X in factory grommets then shoves wires thru. The reality is, Toyota doesn't sell that OEM grommet so you can't replace it if you ever pull out the cable, so perma-hole is there. Even if they did, you'd need to remove the harness to slide the new grommet onto the harness.

I think I'm probably going to end up using a cable gland for mine, and drill the firewall 1" above or diagonal from the OEM harness grommet. As long as you treat the bare sheetmetal, it should never cause issues and there are a couple of OEM part numbers to properly plug the hole if you ever pull the wire in the future.

The CAF guy walks thru proper ways to wire, and it's definitely worth a watch. He doesn't cover simply running thru the OEM body harness grommett, which is do-able for anything up to 10awg, probably. He also shows why it's stupid to cut slits/X in rubbers, and shows BMF's method of punching which is one possible solution (but I don't believe it's the best for our trucks on things larger than 10awg-8awg).

That said, anyone that's worked in the industry is going to have their own pet peeves. It's the same as anything out there, profession-wise. Anyone that's worked in the industry professional or been a serious hobbyist, they'll have their preferred way of doing things, and sometimes shit on the way others do things, and always have their, "oh hell naw, I'd never do that in X/Y/Z situation!"

I love that guy. He does some really nice box finishing. If I ever re-design my setup, I'd probably pay him to design it and build the box myself. I'm not a big fan of the ports on mine, and I can probably slim it down some if need be.

I keep thinking about this sub for our ACs, with the trim piece on, is there anything like a grill that protects the tops of the speakers? My seats spend at least half the time folded up so I can toss tool bags/boxes and other random crap back there. If they speakers are exposed with the seat up, I'd probably destroy them within a month.

 

I mean, in theory you could add anything you wanted over them.

 

Could you take a photo of yours with the trim piece on it? Not sure if the trim is just around the edges or if it covers them at all. Thanks

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Still have a feeling I'd destroy it tossing tools back there. Really wish I could mount a tool box in the bed, but that's where mountain bikes and motorcycles go. I'm still on my stock stereo unit and haven't even started thinking about replacing everything yet, but when the time comes I'll see what I'm mainly using the truck for and decide then.

If you were from OK I would believe it. We have a dispensary on every corner. I don't keep anything in my cubby as I am going to remove seat and build deck with drawers.

Pass side has extra emergency straps, road flares, and jumper cables.



Under polo’s platform i have a tent, a container of cable dog leads & chain leashes, a tarp, and a container of tentstakes, more paracord, one of those screw-in dog anchors, a tire thumper, a 12v compressor, and a 12v work light. And a 2’x4’ folding table.
