Tundras were built for this!!

Not to be a dick, but I have no filter right now due to lack of sleep, but it sounds like you don't actually check your payload on your truck. Especially telling a guy with a 5th wheel to nose load his trailer.

 

Trouble is, those that wish to ignore it will use this exact info in a backwards way. "Yeah, see! The old stuff did it and now these new ones are even better, so we can do even more stuff over the limits and it'll all be fine!" When somebody wants to do something badly enough, they're gonna do it and justify it however they need to.

Totally agree. Hell, go back to when I was first on here and I was looking at a travel trailer, then a toy hauler, and all that. You, specifically, and the forum in general taught me a ton and I recognized the same things you did. The Tundra is NOT built for this. I just went the other direction and tailored my stuff to my truck., while you tailored your truck to your stuff. Both are perfectly good ways to do it, and I'd prefer either to white-knuckling it with a trailer around a bend, taking out 427 mailboxes and narrowly avoiding a drop in the Marianas trench.

It doesn’t doesn’t matter how many years and experience you have OP because clearly all those times you have done it stupidly. You are over your payload, a friggin 6 year old can read the manual and I would hope slap you in the face and say you’re overloaded dumbass don’t bring your “the truck can do it” bullshit here. Every thing you add to the truck takes away from payload yes even the upgrades to make it tow better, I’m from an island never towed before only been 3 years towing a travel trailer and I know you’re overloaded.

same rig gets to the intersection at the bottom of the hill and can't stop for the red light and slams into traffic!! The first vehicle hit is a GMC truck both occupants, husband and wife were killed...



As the tow vehicle and trailer run through and over vehicles that are rightfully in the intersection, one vehicle bursts into flames...


...the driver of this vehicle was in critical condition!



Investigation determined that the load exceeded "max weight limits"...

For those that don't think "the little stickers" matter; they do!

For those that don't think exceeding GVWR, payload, etc. is negligent; it is!

For those that don't think investigative teams won't weigh your shit; they will!

For those that don't think they can be charged criminally for negligence; you're wrong!

For those that are unfamiliar with charges such as manslaughter, negligence resulting in death, negligent homicide, etc... These types of felonies don't require pre-meditation or criminal intent. Generally speaking, it's simply a willful and wanton disregard for the safety and well being of another human being(s) resulting in that person(s) death.

By the way, the driver of the truck depicted above was in fact arrested and charged with multiple felonies in connection with the collision.

 

I don't think I can give that a like, but it's a solid representation of why I try not to be cavalier about the recommendations and ratings from the people who built the truck. Even if I think they are being extra conservative and erring on the side of safety... WTF is wrong with that? Trying to be safe? How does that make you the dick in the conversation?

I don't point out the bad idea because I get a kick out of shooting down people's good times, though that's a nice bonus. The purpose is to see if they have thought about what they are doing and if they are really willing to take on the personal responsibility for their actions. It's not just you on the road.

The guy in the pics you have here... he gets to live with the fact that he hurt people. Compared to the flat out knowledge that your actions ended peoples lives and left families grieving, is prison even that big a deal? Are we so self centered as a society and obsessed with "Bigger!" and "MORE!" that we don't even think about what might happen to other people?

You don't wanna wear your seatbelt and you're the only one in your car, fine. Go for it, but if you have a passenger you are putting their life in danger by not wearing it. EMT I worked with taught a defensive/safe driving class, and to drive home seatbelts for people to do it in their personal life and have others do it to, he shared his experience of working a single vehicle accident off of I-80.

The vehicle was a 3 row SUV like a Tahoe or a Suburban with 6 or 7 people in it. The driver wasn't paying attention, overcorrected and crashed in the median near an exit. The only person who died in that accident was the girl who was wearing her seatbelt in the front passenger seat. She was the only one in the vehicle wearing a seatbelt. Do you know what killed her? It wasn't the seatbelt. It was the right shoulder of the guy in the very back left of the SUV because he was launched like missile through the vehicle and his shoulder caved in the back of her skull. If he hadn't decided that he didn't need a seat belt, that wouldn't have been a fatal accident. It would have been a bumps and bruises, everybody walked away from it, happy ending. Do you really think he even remotely thought he was putting anyone but himself in danger? Hell no, but that didn't make her any less dead.

Just stop and think about somebody else for just a second once in a while.

 

Payload capacity is close to 2k. A trailer that size has a tounge weight of around 800 lbs to 1k depending how it's loaded... And I said to not load to tail heavy... that doesn't mean you should load the crap out of the nose... Not my fault everyone is underestimating this truck and forgetting it's not a dang TACO

 

No, the payload of a 2019 Limited CrewMax is NOT near 2000 lbs. That is 100% false. With the optimistic marketing the highest rating a 4x4 Limited CrewMax 1530 lbs. Claiming 2000 lbs is an exaggeration of 30%. If your boss tells you they'll pay you "Close to" $100 per hour but your paycheck only shows up with $75 per hour rate, how easily are you gonna let that slide? More than double the 800 lbs low ball you suggest and 50% more than the 1,000 lbs you figure is high end. That's the dry weight. You are grossly underestimating the trailer's weight while over estimating the trucks ratings. Not my fault you think this truck is a 3/4 ton HD truck, because it isn't.

 

@GODZILLA LOOK! Another guy with a crewmax complaining about PAYLOAD Sorry not all of us got crew cabs haha! I knew someone was going to have to come back with the " N0o0o0 the truck is n0t capable!!" response... instead of using logic to realize that the tounge weight should NOT be 20 PERCENT of the weight of the trailer??? like come on man... This is about the OP's truck which is a crewmax limited. Also, this isn't a bumper pull, it's a 5th wheel so it's a completely different animal for weight. It is absolutely going to be 20% pin weight because it's NOT a bumper pull trailer. FFS, go read the thread before you spout off about people not thinking.

 

I don't think anyone here is going to admit that it is wrong pulling 5th wheel that size with tundra. Nature of the internet is running its course. Best to save strength..

Exactly! If the trucks from back in the day were so beastly then why are trucks constantly getting more ridged and powerful? Oh maybe because people realized having to white knuckle 10k lbs and pray the drum brakes hold up, is absolutely zero fun and a liability. We maybe be spoiled today, but I actually enjoying towing now that the truck doesn’t struggle and get pushed around the road.

People can do what they want, but to say the tundra is built for a 5th wheel is wrong. Case in point the removal of the transmission cooler

 

We can always increase our payload by using lighter weight oils, can't we?

 

Or putting 28 lbs of air in the tires, instead of 38 lbs. Don’t forget the spare for more weight savings.

Swap out the 16 lb rad cap for a 10 lb. Heck, we’ve added up to 56 lbs already.
