Garage size

We have a side entry garage, 18w x 23.5d x 8h. It's slightly oversized with another 6 ft on the house side so that gives some extra room.

You should be fine with 23 ft depth. I can pull mine in with just enough room to drop the tailgate and still be able to walk around the front. Getting this CM with 5.5 ft bed made me realize a 6.5 ft bed would be too tight.

Height should also work. I have a 6" lift on 35s and still have some room to spare.

If I could have more width i would. Backing in is the only option for me and if i give enough room to keep the doors from being able to ding the other vehicle, it's tight getting in and out. Go as wide as you can.

My garage measures 22' inside. I hung a piece of small rope about 3" from the front wall, and I pull the Tundra in until I see it move. That puts me about 2" from that wall. I then have roughly 2' of walk space behind it -- enough to walk behind it carrying something if it's not too large. The door height is 7', and I have plenty of room for my 2WD Limited. I'd say you should be fine, but bigger is, indeed, always better.

 

We have actually entertained a similar idea. We've talked about a large metal building with a 2BR apartment for us. Inside that building would be a motorcycle shop for me and an art studio for her. There would obviously be places to park our car and pickup. The RV would be parked in a manner that would give it water and electric to use as a spare bedroom or guest room. There would be a separate area for all the crap old, married couples acquire and must store -- lawn mowers, log splitters, yada, yada. We currently have 4 buildings housing all that crap that total about 3800 sq ft. I figure a 50' x 80' should be adequate.

 

What's the width on your garage door?

 

18 ft wide.

 

My garage is 20.5 ft deep and my truck fits with literally a few inches to spare front and rear. Placement of the tennis ball parking aid is CRITICAL to make sure I don't damage the exterior wall as I pull in.

 

This is terrible advice!! Where will you get your truck mod money from??? Kidding of course, build at least a little bigger than you think you should. You won't regret the space.

 

I am starting on a detached garage today at the house. Dims will be 24w x 26d, 16x8 single door with 10' ceiling. wanted to make sure I had ample room for the tundra and wife's Durango with a little room to spare

 

Assuming yours will be front entry vs. side? Side entry would be tight with a 16ft door and full size SUV.

Correct, front entry. Pad is existing at 22w x 24d, so we will just be adding concrete around the sides and rear, then applying a fresh coat to level it all out and make it uniform across.

 

I bought a new construction in SE GA two years ago. Height of the garage is just fine, but the length is way to short for most cars let alone if you store anything else in there. During a hail storm I was JUST barely able to fit my truck inside with probably 3 inches to spare between the front bumper/wall and rear bumper/garage door. Stupidly short in my opinion. My next garage will have to comfortably fit my truck without moving any other junk I have stored in there.

You can ask them to install a 12’ header in the back wall, for a future opening into a future shop space. That will make a future addition out the back easier. Just a thought I have no idea what your layout and room on the backside is like.

 

Okay, now I know I should always go bigger for such a car. I haven’t got a tundra yet, but I plan to buy it because it’s necessary for my work as a farmer and a forester.
Also, I have been thinking about the garage door I should get for the new garage I am going to build. Since there will be precious things in the garage, I want the door to be as safe as possible. I know that no door will make it impossible to break in for thieves that are determined to get in. but it will at least give me some more time to react. I think about getting a door from advantagegd.com because they offer many security features and an insulated door option. What do you think?

 

That's the reason I expanded my pad, and went with an 8' tall garage door. enough room for my Tundra, the wife's Dirango, and a workbench in the corner.

 

No garage is ever large enough!

Yes - not applicable. Would your spouse agree to that? Not exactly a family house with a garage. That is a farm shed with a bachelor pad.

 

My kids have been on their own for 18 yrs. Wife would be totally fine, her house, my garage. No cabin fever here.

 

Get a big garage. This is me parking in my garage.

 

I have a 26' deep by 36' wide garage. I have a 18'x8' and a 9'x8' door.
I came from a a 24' deep garage and the extra 2' of depth is a Godsend.
Push for more than 23'. It will probably work but is not optimal. Especially for what you are going to spend on the place.....

 

Neighbor said I'd never get 3 cars and a golf cart in my garage... I think it's 20x30? Still not big enough.

 

id love to have 23' depth. mine is like ~19.5' at our other property i store it at but it fits and is out of the washington state weather. that's all that matters.

 

Do you climb in and out of your back window?

 

No LOl! In that configuration the truck is not going anywhere without moving one outside. The benz sits outside most of the time and is our daily driver. I hate having it sit outside in the FL sun but the garage just isn't big enough.
