No, but she thought I was which made it even worse.

I think she was taking all her anger out on me from all the guys that dumped her.

How could I tell? I could hear her sobbing through the walls.

Yeah! It's only 49.5% of the state, dammit!
It's not hype if it's happened on several occasions in recent years.

I feel like this should be in the 'what'd you do today'

For a sec, I had to check which thread I was in. Lately, the 'what'd you do today' thread has been feeling more like the lunch table. The two threads are becoming a bit indistinguishable. Somehow, conversation of recreational tax over there right now, over here we're looking at 1st Gen suspension goodness! :D

    I need an adult.

if i wanted to run lights under my bedrails, and wanted to use a momentary switch for the tailgate, and a switch, wired up like a 3-way in a house, where the switch reverses the momentary. So i could have the light on with the tailgate closed, or off with it open...

possible? Do i need a fancy switch or relay?

Yes, follow this diagram. you need 1- SPDT MOMENTARY SWITCH, 1- SPDT REGULAR SWITCH.

So, wait. Let me get this straight.
You want a pin switch/plunger that will turn the lights on/off with open/close of the tailgate.
In that same circuit, you want an override switch that you can flip on/off to turn the lights on/off regardless of the state of the pin switch/plunger?

EDIT: N/m, @KK6PD looks like he's got you covered.

I mean ... all time is relative, I guess, at least that's what some famous German dude said once.

It may just be me, but it seems like it's gone off on a few more tangents than normal lately. Not like I'm not guilty of derailing, I usually don't realize what thread I'm in when I reply.

But then again, I often don't know where the hell I am these days.

    Spdt momentary?

    explain it like i'm 5.

not really an override. Like a 3-way circuit. Where the secondary (tailgate momentary) depends on the primary.

can leds be driven from both sides?

Not to complicate the responses, but can a DPST be used instead with both switches able to trigger the relay?

    OK, components 101...
SPDT Single Pole Double Throw. this is a switch that has a common that switches between the two poles....
SPDT Momentary, same thing, but one side is always connected, other side needs the button to be depressed to make contact. Usually indicated with a NO, Normally Open, NC Normally Closed and a Common

The tailgate switch would be located at the tailgate. The other in the cab.
I would mock this up before you install it. Wire as shown, use a 9 volt battery in your mockup. get it to work on a table, then do it again on the truck. This is a pretty simple circuit.
Can LEDs be driven from both sides????
    Not sure what you mean???
You can run as many LEDs as you want, but they all have to be on the same side of the circuit. And I would run those LEDs in series to minimize the current draw.

    I need a 3 wire momentary?

    this is what ive got:
    B64A0D9D-5F6A-4FA7-8F43-DEF79E545CA7.jpg

Pressed button with the tailgate closed would turn the light on. And a switch under the bedrail near the front driver tie down would be ideal. Flip the switch and the light would be on until i open the tailgate.

plan to run power from the reciever hitch. Relay could work.

You obviously don’t know the people I have to work with sometimes. People have to be explicitly told to not spit into the hybrid module. Like it’s okay if I don’t tell them even though it’s a $10k assembly.

If all you had were DPDT's, yes you could use them, but only one (1) side of the switch would be used, and you still would need two (2) physical switches....

Both a momentary and a rocker style switch could be used independently of each other or at the same time to control the lights correct?

I wouldn’t want it as described. I would want three functional elements.

    tailgate open, auto on
3 way rocker for on / off / auto

    or in more basic blocks:

Pin or mercury switch for tailgate is open / closed for auto mode
Kill switch for the above (off if using a rocker)
On switch for “give me led”

Yes that would be correct, as long as both switches were SPDT minimum....!

What you have there is a simple SPST Single Pole Single Throw, NO, Normally Open switch.
You would need to replace that switch with a SPDT NO Normally Open switch.

To accomplish that stuff it’s easiest with ground switching. Off floats the ground input to the tailgate switch making it useless. On grounds the LED’s directly. Auto sends ground to the tailgate switch to the led. Typically a relay is used so we are discussing feeding the negative of that relay coil. The relay itself can connect ground or power depending on what is easier but if the relay is ground switched then it needs power for the other side of the coil so may as well output power to the lights from that one feed.

Yes that would work, but you are over complicating the circuit, your Items 1 & 2 could be combined in the momentary SPDT switch and achieve what you want!

We can disagree on the value but I do agree it’s more complicated. I would want the switch in the cab or accessible from the cab. For “s I forgot” when driving with tailgate down.
