2.5 gen tpms compatible with 2 gen?

title says it all. i got some 2.5 gen(2016) wheels on my 2013. a tire tech told me that the tpms on the newer wheels wouldnt work with my truck. bit sick of looking at the tire pressure warning light so i figure id find out for myself. if not, any idea on where to get a set of 2nd gen ones cheap? are there generic options? are they wheel or vehicle specific? ive never dealt with them before.

Up to and including 2017 sensors work with 2nd gens. 2018 and up are different sensors.

I run those same TRD wheels from a ‘17 on mine, with the ‘17 sensors.

 

ok, to be honest, i just guessed with the 2016 number. they could be newer than that. if its from a 2018, or 2019, do they not work? am i looking at an expensive set of tpms, or is it even possible?

 

Are there tires mounted on the new(er) wheels at the moment?

If no, you can look for a TRW logo (older style) or Pacific (newer style) and read the ID code printed on them.

If yes, you will need a (tire) shop with a TPMS ID scanner to read the ID from outside the tire, and that can be used to determine if they are TRW or Pacific.

Worst case senario, you’d need 4 new TRW sensors, and have them installed.

There is also a difference between alloy wheel sensors and steelie's.

 

thanks. i think its safe to assume they are the new ones and icompatible, as the tire shop definitely attempted to scan for them.
$40 per tire? ouch. guess i should have looked into this more prior to buying new wheels. thoughts on buying used? this ebay auction seems about right?

In theory those should work for you. Probably wouldn’t be my choice, since the age / real battery condition is unknown, and it costs to have them installed.

If your previous wheels were alloys, you could also swap those sensors over to the new wheels. But again, questionable life left in those if they are original from your ‘13.

That said, my winter set of wheels have what I’m pretty certain are three original sensors from ‘08, and still going. Had to replace one back in ‘16 when I bought the truck.

Get these Autel TPMS sensors and either clone your existing or program into your truck. I used an Autel TS508 to program my sensors. The MX sensor are compatible since they are dual frequency. (315mhz & 433mhz) Once you are done with the TS508 you can sell it. There are some also used on eBay cheaper.
