On front visibility, one big reason for my love of the ‘05 RC Tacoma is how easy it is to see around, side, front, rear.
For my ‘02 Tundra with the shell, I still want a front camera. It’s so nice to nail the parking exactly where you want it. And extra safety when lifted.

 

That's why they put cameras in front so you can see what's there. Can't say it's a good design though. I prefer better visibility myself.

 

Johnny (puppypunter) has side facing cameras tied to his turn signals. I was planning to do something similar with the Tundra. One day. I haven’t yet located the ideal spots for them. I believe his are rear facing for BSM in traffic. I wouldn’t mind a front quarter facing option too, so more like 6 cameras, front, rear, driver side front, driver side rear, same for passenger. So your front / rear selector is one control input and your turn the other. Sometimes a passenger front corner camera can be useful in a tight spot.

But, I can also see how these aids make drivers less capable. And back to the ‘05 RC Tacoma with zero extras, that seems like the perfect training truck.

 

I tried to integrate the smallest camera on the market from a vendor sample and was unsuccessful myself due to the lack of space behind the mirror in the housing.

That was back in 2014 though.

 

I want a few camera all capable of recording at the same time. If ya’ll figure it out, lemme know.

 

That's easy to do actually if you run your own 4-channel solid state DVR. Only trick is to bump down the voltage of camera operation to reduce power dissipation, at least for a "good" camera that provides specs.

 

Great point. The stock mirrors are so rounded anyway, modding them for cameras is not easy.

I’m thinking the shell might be the best spot for attaching. But I don’t really want a rack on my shell. So possibly something off a bracket on each windoor T handle, one front and one rear. Then wiring becomes a small issue but a small hole for that at the top of the door isn’t so bad, just seal it up. That’s the theory anyway. Then with the shell removed you have front and rear only but also improved view out the back window due to no shell.

good call, i thought id have to piece something together. Whats with the 4.8w rating? Seems kinda low.

 

And sensors all around, everywhere. But really, you should be able to see enough you don't need to rely on driver aids. It's not realistic for a person to be looking ahead and looking at a front camera.

Unless, of course, the whole point is to ultimately make cars so dangerous we need to let the car do all the piloting.

 

I think Cruzer made this work. Check his later gen build. Not the same truck, but the distribution and “brain” will probably be similar.

 

Lack of visibility is nothin new, truckers have been dealing with it forever. So just follow the experienced, and put inboard facing MIRRORS on all corners of your turd gen. Then you can safely tow any step side to the junkyard for disposal without the worry (or guilt thereafter) of running over any children belonging to parents that have failed at teaching said kids to stay outta the gawd damn street. Boom.

 

Or we could just stop trying to make trucks look like futuristic versions of the 1980s? I already had to live thru that decade once, I didn't need a flashback.

I read later posts and figured out what he meant by 2 low. Someone in here broke it down well, so I better recognized what he wants to compare.

I still stand by the opinion I offered, that 4x4 > 2wd + locker for most circumstances. I bought an inferno 2017 2wd, love it, and drove it a lot of places off road that other guys needed 4x4 to get to. But I later wanted 4x4 so I bought another truck.

Finally, OP already had 4x4’s. And there’s the cool description of pulling a heavy shipping container. I just didn’t remove my post because I think I’m not the only one that wouldn’t know what he was initially asking. Anyway, clarified.

It’s been a while, but I thought it was a popular mod with the tacos, “the Andy mod” or the yellow wire mod, along those lines…….. or maybe I made all that up and it’s just locking the rear end; not in 4 low, my apologies, it’s been a long day, been smoking since 430am…..

I had "2lo" in my 95 Tacoma. If I put the TC shifter to 4lo but didn't lock the front hubs I had 2lo. Used it all the time since it was a manual trans truck. Keeps from wearing your clutch out. It was nice on a hilly driveway with lots of cars on it.

Don't think I'd ever need it in a v8 auto tundra though.

Yeah, I have it in the 2016, was thinking out loud about the 2005 as far as capability goes, with a stock 2wd, wondering if adding a TC was looney bin material.
