Homies. He’d love to build a shop— and has space on his property to do it, so it’ll probably happen eventually— to accommodate more homies and more fun builds, but he’s got a real “adult” full time gig that requires a lot of travel, is an active military reservist, and has a lovely wife he wants to keep— so since he got this job, he’s kinda scaled back on some of the driveway truck builds. A talented guy though, and he loves wrenching, so he’ll probably continue to do builds and fabricating as time permits.

 

I only turn OD off if the transmission starts hunting.
Even towing 7000 lbs I’ve yet to have the transmission start hunting.

 

More progress on the engine. Pretty much assembled. Also ordered a new transmission from Toyota. I give up trying to deal with these junkyards for a used transmission. I’ll still piece an e153 together. But fuck it, brand new LSD e153 coming from Toyota. Hopefully soon. I’ll know shortly.

Random thought of the evening, is it possible to stuff a 4wd rear only kit into a 2wd to get 2 lo, or is that all in the transfer case at which point doing a full 4x4 conversion makes more sense ?

 

I’m not sure what you’re asking but I don’t know what 2 low is.

You can add a locker to a 2wd which would allow you to lock the rear wheels of a 2wd… and that would add capability in a lot of situation. Like the Tacomas have licking diffs in back.

But a 4x4 conversion, while fun and we all want to see one… so please spend that money and post a lot of pics!… doesn’t make a lot of sense; buy a different truck if you have a 2wd and want the same truck but with 4x4.

 

I am just trying to understand options on a 2wd. I have 1 of them and don’t plan to do anything but street with it. The other two are both 4wd already.

And clearly a locker in a 2wd makes sense and adds legit capability. But low gear range has to be worth something too, right? So my question is where does that low gear live? TC or diff?

 

yea, low is in the tcase. I havent looked too hard, but i should be able to do a switch to the ADD to gimme 2 low.

But a 2wd prerunner won’t have a T case right? So no low gear? And the benefit of going locker plus low is x vs fully 4x4 conversion as y and x is close enough to y that everyone goes y?

 

I guess it depends what you want to do. Offroad? 4x4 is much better.
Drag a loaded shipping container across pavement? 2 low should get you there.

snowbobs truck did some impressive things in 2wd with the locker on. My 2wd atv made it through a level 4 trail, and so did my buddies ozark 250. 4wd would have been helpful in the gravel and sandy bits, but where traction was available, 2wd was fine. (But live axle locked 2wd)

 

there is no transfer case yea. so no. there is no "low" gear. (technically any gear that isnt 1:1 is a low gear though... high gear if its above 1:1)

2wd transmissions have a tail housing. technically 4wd too. thats the main part that changes.

 

True dat. I dont know why i was picturing the 2wd trans like i was. I know ive seen a trans without a separate tailhousing, but brainfart as to what it was in.

So ... this is a complaint from a lot of folks driving the damn things, inability to see things over the absurd hood bulges. How much longer y'all think before the NHTSA forces auto makers to stop doing this BS design where you can't see over the front of the hood?

It's one of the main reasons I love our trucks, and really find the post-1GT models ugly af. This is really not ok...

 

PS - this actually happened over the weekend. I had to fab up some stuff under my bathroom sink, and I actually had the spare wood on-hand.

 

I feel this one. I'll never resist the urge to take a good 2x4 from the scrap pile, even if it means pulling a few nails.

 

No kidding. Back when lumber shot up we went to replace a motor on a generator. It was a crate motor so it came wrapped in plywood nailed to a 2x4 frame. You're damn right I kept every piece of that. My coworker said trash it.

 

I'm having major issues right now just driving through my neighborhood. 2 dozen houses going up, along with hundreds of townhome/condo/apt within 2 blocks, and 6,000 of the latter within 10-12 blocks. Every time I walk the dog I walk past one of the houses, tons of scrap 2x (4/6/10) laying around. Not enough room in my garage to keep it all, but I've picked out a few choice pieces, and mroe will probably land in the attic. May end up finishing out the rest of my attic floor before long.

This weekend, I needed to build a curb around a cutout for p-traps under my master sink. Ran down to the shop, "I know I got this!". Sure enough, I had 2 pieces if furring strip leftover from a door frame I built damn near back when our 1st kid was born, about 26" each piece. I only needed four 7" pieces and two 6" pieces to build my curb, perfect match. Bradded together with narrow crown, glued and trim nailed into place. Happy wife, happy life.

Y'all don't even want to see the footlong mouse that came out before I installed the new p-trap setup. Much less smell it. If you've ever been to a hair place where someone's getting a perm, imagine crossing that smell with restaurant garbage. Wanna hurk just thinking about it.
