Shop says 5.29 gears are supposed to be noisy

So far, I’m holding on strong getting used to it a few thousand miles later……… I LIED! I sometimes breakdown and cry. I have phantom whining in my ears when sleeping!

 

Go back to them and have them take a look. My sierras have zero whine.

 

Quick question to those who have done the swap:

My installer is having issues with setting backlash. The shims included in the kit are entirely too thick. He is looking for some .005-.015s or .020...the rear only came with .060-.080ish and none came for the front.

Also, which shims would you say would be good to start pinion depth?

Ok so after speaking with Keith Carty, NW Drivetrain, West Coast Diffs, and the local Toyota parts guy, I've come to the conclusion that if I had a water jet and stainless stock I'd make millions making shim kits for Tundras.

Maybe not millions but high thousands.

I finally found an install kit by Yukon Gear sold by East Coast Gear Supply that has super thin shims (.003 up to .020ish). Link here for any who may need it.

 

Just had Revolution 5.29 With REM installed this week. It whines at deceleration and freeway speeds. The whine at freeway speeds is annoying even with 8” dirty deeds exhaust.

 

Is it like a whistle? Like a turbo whistle?

 

Yes it is.

 

My Nitros do it on deceleration only. Installer mentioned checking backlash, pinion depth, and pattern multiple times and all are good.

I'm in the break-in period so running regular gear oil but on the drain and fill I'll be using quality 80W-140. Will see if the whistle is still there and to what degree. It actually doesn't bother me one bit but I don't get it on acceleration or cruising speed

 

I went with Revolution because they were supposed to be quiet like stock gears. I’ll give the shop a call in a few days if it’s still there.

 

Same boat either the decel whistle. My installers claimed every toyota he has ever installed gears on has done this . Also doesn’t bother me too much either, I’ve gotten used to it

So from my personal experience getting 4.88s on my TRD Off Road Tacoma.

Yes, regearing will add some diff noise. My expert regearer told me that since the gears I bought werent perfectly smooth on the outside they would be making a little more noise than “higher end” smoother machined gears. Thats not to say that the pattern was bad, it was dead on, but the outside of the rings had little circles.

I did hear a small whine, not enough to bother me.

 

Mine made a slight noise at first but it went away after a few hundred miles. It was very subtle to start with though, had to be listening specifically for it to know.

 

Hey, did the sound go away with the 80W-140? I’m getting my Nitro re-gear to 5.29s at the end of June so was going to get the same oil you did if the sound stopped or was at least quieter. Thank you!

Not 5.29 related but nitro gear related. My old man has 4.88s in his supercharged tundra. Slight whine but after switching to Amsoil no noise at all.

 

I'm putting Amsoil in our Sequoia and HPL 85w-140 in my Tundra. First time ever using Amsoil. I joined the "club" as it was the same cost to ship.

 

We run it in all our rigs. Ill be adding this to my difs/trans etc when the time comes

 

HPL 75w goes in my transfer case.

 

Amsoil for everything except engine (Kirkland or other cheap stuff every 4-5k depending on use) and TC (Ravenol 75W).

After watching The Car Care Nut, I decided he’s right—it’s less about how expensive your engine oil is and more about your OCI—he recommends never going more than 5k miles before swapping.

If I do gears, which I kinda want to, I will stick with Amsoil. Watching a bunch of threads including this one before I decide. I would probably do a limited slip in the rear at the same time.

Just to update but got my truck back early morning yesterday and i don’t have too much noise. Windows up and music off I hear it most at 50-55 mph cruising. Other than that nothing really. About 150 miles into break in. My shop did a few heat cycles for the first 50 miles before I got it back. Nitro 5.29 with Nitro gear oil as well. Not sure on what weight, will ask next week when I get it drained and refilled.

 

I've done my 500 mile break-in. Actually went 650. Shop drained and filled with HPL 75w-140. Old stuff looked like what you'd expect. Front was very clean. Rear was murky with tiny specks. Post-fluid change I don't really hear much of a difference.

When you hear your noise is it on acceleration or deceleration?

 

deceleration but I should’ve mention I do have a dirty deeds trd replacement system 5x12 (loudest version) on as well. So I’m sure that plays a little into why I don’t hear much on acceleration.

After the first drain and fill at 500 miles, do you plan on getting it done again at 5,000 or 10,000 just to be safe?

 

My mechanic told me that he's fully confident that the noise on the "coast" side is benign and would be more concerned if it were on acceleration. I told him it's cool cause it kinda sounds (to me) like a turbo spoolin lol

I plan on doing a regular interval change.

 

glad to hear that lol I was gonna ask the shop about it after a change if it was still there.

oh for sure! The whine/whistle to me doesn’t bother me too much since playing music on a low level drowns it out, same when I drive with my windows down.

I think I might stay with the same oil they used originally and if that still makes a noise then I might consider a 10k change and go

75w-90. All depends on how annoying it gets. I’m just about at 30 hours with my truck post change so still new to me and not annoying yet. Next weekend I drive 4/5 hours to lake George so we’ll see how it is on that drive. That might be my deciding factor

 

Well, if you think about it, road trips are rarely "coast" time. You'll be accelerating in cruise control and/or manually for the most part. Unless you're in mountain country the majority of the way. If I were you, I'd have saved the good fluid for the post break-in cause that's pricey stuff to drain after only 500 miles.
