Is one coilover better than the other?

Would one of these be better than the other? I currently have 5100's and love them. But if Boss has some sort of advantage I may go that route considering price to almost be the same.

You are like $200 from a 2.5" fully rebuildable coilover.... why wouldn't you just go that way? Saves you money in the long run

I am looking for a little extra for some bigger tires down the road. I am with you. I think it's crazy expensive for just a half inch to an inch.

 

A replacement coilover will do 3" of lift. They are fully adjustable from 0-3" I would suggest doing upper control arms on anything over 2.5" of lift as well.

 

Exactly my thoughts. I was thinking of going with the SPC uca. I heard they are pretty adjustable. Going a bigger tire eventually I would assume the SPC uca might help some with that?

 

I would completely agree with @sdhq_offroad on that one, uppers for corrective angles and saving a couple more dollars and going with something like Icon or Camburg non resi coilovers. You can always set the coilovers to 2.5 until you get your uppers then crank them up to 3in and get the alignment done in one sitting.

 

Also if you looking at doing something like this down the road, and not at this exact moment @sdhq_offroad has some of the best deals around come black friday sales on everything suspension wise. I got my camburg uppers and kings from them for a hell of a deal last year.

 

Thanks everyone. I am just looking to gain height and have the best ride I can with adjustability for the cheapest $$$ Cake and eat it too... I suppose. Thanks for your suggestions. If anyone can recommend the best set up together for the best price that would be awesome. So correct me if I am wrong. New uca can be adjusted to give me extra height?

 

Most upper control arms are designed with drop in the arm to help account for getting back within factory alignment specs. The arm will allow for more suspension travel which in turn allow you to put more preload into a coilover for more lift. The arm itself does not lift the truck.

 

Personally i would spend the extra cash and get a set of kings, fox's or icons....They are bigger and have a better ride imho.

 

Pavement pounder mostly for sure. Playing in the dirt just a tad.

Well I'm trying to get a lift on the truck but also have it handled the best it can. I am also trying to avoid spacers and blocks if possible. Also trying to prepare for bigger tires as well. Do I have an anal side to do it right..... Of course. Just don't want the cheap way out. Originally besides my 5100's I was going to go rear shackles.. Which I still will. And Toytec or CB spacers up front. I have had mixed opinions about that. But if enough people can tell me for my purpose (mostly pavement) that the ride will still be ok and no damage can happen I may change my mind.

Simply lifting the truck does not allow for a bigger tire. The tire will have to go somewhere as the suspension cycles. The wheel wells are pretty big on the Tundra and allow for 35x11.5" tires as is. You don't need to do anything in the rear to fit 35" tires (adding longer shackles will just reduce ride quality) and the front only has to be raised about 1.5-2".

 

Well someone running the tire size I want has a 3-1 lift said he had to heat up the liners a bit. Other than that loose the mud flaps. I already trimmed the skid plate. I have 5100's on top setting. So I believe that is about 2.5 inches max if even. Looking to go from a 275/60/20 BFG Ko2's to a 295/60/20 Nitto Ridge grappler on +20 20 in Fuel Wheels. Currently have +60 Toyota Carve 20 in wheels. I think I read the Toytec Boss coilovers max out at 3 1/2 inches I believe. That is all I want if this is the case. Another question I have is how much can the SPC uca's help with fitment of new +20 wheels I want. Can they be adjusted away from the uca's for more clearance?

 

Shackles will not compromise ride quality as long as proper shocks are added (to allow for increased height as stock shocks won't)

It would take a good bit of modification for 35's to fit on stock suspension, so lift DOES allow for bigger (taller) tires but for wider than a 295 (ish) you'd need wheel spacers or wheels with a lower offset.

I would definitely invest in some UCA's. They're not necessarily needed but does improve performance and stops tires from wandering or darting after a nice bump

 

295's are as big as I want to go. The Nitto Ridge grappler ends up being like 33.94" x 11.77" wide I believe. Good enough for me. I want to ditch my 1.25 spiders as well once I switch over.

Edit: I mean close to the UCA. I have the BOSS kit on 3" and love it! Upgrading to 295/70's as soon as my tires wear out

 

So he lifted the truck but still had to cut/trim to make his larger tires fit. Simply adding lift does not allow more room for larger tire as it still has to move somewhere as the suspension cycles (unless you adjust bumpstops). Adding adjustable UCAs won't help with the fitment of the wheels but will aid in proper alignment and the ball joint has more travel than the stock joint. The SPC UCA takes up more room than the stock one but my 285/70R18s clear it on 18x8" OE wheels. More info below:

Adding a longer lever to act on your leaf springs improved the ride? Not sure that I believe that and it's definitely worse for towing. OP, here's a good read on the possible perils of lifting too much.

 

Nah it tows my double axle Mastercraft X-30 better too.

 

Is 3 in max height adjustment? Or is it 3 1/2.
