Tundra 5.7 Exhaust clapping noise

My exhaust system is a front cat delete with a y pipe into a caver r muffler. Ever since I got rid of the 2 cats the truck sounded way better/Meaner especially at idle and in low gears but sometimes when I hit around 3k rpm it makes this awful clapping noise. I was wondering if anyone knows what exaclty causes this noise and how I can get rid of it. I have seen a video of someone that cut there rear cats and said it sounded like crap afterwards but he said adding a x pipe and then y piping it back after fixed the problem, does this seem like it would work?

You should post a guide for this mod so if/when our cats get stolen we can just treat it as an exhaust upgrade.

 

What size pipe?

 

Well I don’t know what to say about the guide, my front cats were complety clogged almost so I had to find a shop that would actually mess with the cats(most will not!) and from there it’s just cutting the cat out and replacing with some piping

 

Pretty sure it’s all 3in but there are many different parts so I wouldn’t doubt it maybe sum parts that haven’t been touched are the stock 2.5 but my muffler I got 3 inch and my exhaust shop had no trouble getting it on

 

3” all the way may be the problem. Didn’t allow for much back pressure to even exhaust pulses. X pipe helps blend the two sides of the exhaust together, adding a Y pipe at the end might help with the clapping. But dual 3” all the way is too large for these motors.

 

I always figured the smaller exhaust pipes is what made a lot of that clapping noise and the bigger pipes were deeper sounding, and I already have the y pipe so are you saying to put an x pipe then y pipe it after the muffler?

 

There’s a sweet spot for every motor. If you were supercharged, it would be different. A lot more air / exhaust flow. Too small is bad, too large can hurt low end torque. A reputable exhaust shop that builds custom exhaust should be able to match the system to your motor.

 

Eventually I’ll plan on getting some headers but that will probably in a couple years or something lol so I don’t really wanna complety change out my system but try to tweak it to get rid of that clappiness and it only happens when I’m really really on the throttle so that why I think an x pipe might prevent it but I don’t really wanna just go experimenting quite yet

 

What confuses me a little bit though is that most dual system trucks are the ones that make this terrible sound so I’m a Little hesitant to switch over to the duals if I were going for the x pipe

 

X pipes are used to balance the exhaust system in a dual exhaust setup. True duals have a left side motor and right side motor system. The X-pipe blends the two together to equalize the back pressure and exhaust pulses. Most high performance setups have an H or X pipe to do this. I think these motors are usually plumbed with 2.25-2.5" pipe. If you Y into a single, that pipe could be 3". The Carver R muffler is also creating the sound in your system. You may get more pleasing results with a different version or different brand all together. Get a good set of headphones and go to youtube and listen to all the exhaust videos for your version of Tundra. Lots on there, it will give you an idea of what's available and what sounds good to you.

 

Okay thanks for all the info. So are you saying the cavern r is creating the sound I don’t want? Or is the lack of muffler casing the sound because the cavern r is almost complety straight through. Do you think I would have better luck changing mufflers or changing over to duals with x pipe or something of that nature messing with the exhaust flow because I honestly love the way my truck sounds until it hits that noise which only happenswhen I’m trying to race or something like that so I don’t hear it all the time only full throttle

 

Do the Youtube thing and see what YOU like. Everyone's taste is a little different. You don't like your current setup, sounds like something new is in order.

 

3” exhaust system should be matched with long tube headers, otherwise you are headed for underperformance.

to get rid of it just make both banks of exhaust before the y pipe the same length.
