This is crazy but my truck is doing the exact same thing. 2wd trans shit the bed, stopped going into reverse, Metal to metal spinning grind sound. Eventually stopped going forward in low gears. If i really stepped on it and it shifted into higher gears it would act normal again. Dropped the trans and pan lots of chunks of metal on all three magnets. 4WD trans was sourced new filter and torque converter installed. Mated to vehicle buttoned everything up and still no reverse but grinding spinning sound is gone and she sounds a whole lot better. Under load truck does a slight turn same as OP video. With rear axle jacked up and thrown into reverse gear no wheel movement immediate but with a little gas wheels spin freely.

    STUMPED to say the least.

I was just using the s10 cases as an example, because i knew there were 4wd and awd differences. A little digging shows v8 4runners had awd torsen center diffs like land cruisers. Something i wasnt sure about earlier.

    motorhome was a v10 gasser, so ?4r100? [\off topic]

@Hasteen just a converter and filter? Why not dig all the way in and check clutches/bands and pump? Those metal chunks had to come from somewhere.

@Sirfive the 4WD I sourced was clean when I drained the fluid and inspected the pan, with only 128k on the donor I figured it was safe. I still have the 2WD and will be inspecting it further. I have never disassembled a trans completely so that will be interesting.

My bad, i missed that part. Im not sure how much the computer runs the trans. I wonder if theres something that needs to be done to learn or teach the trans? Does the trans pump fluid through the cooler?

@Sirfive i had that same conversation with a service advisor buddy of mine but I haven’t found anything that confirms a relearn required.

I haven’t checked the lines yet.

Trans doesnt work in or out of 4wd, so it's not the transfer case. Also it hasn't made any sounds at all so it doesn't seem like anything broke completely. I'm thinking it's either the torque converter, pump, or a solenoid .I just scanned the codes as I havnt had time recently and it has code p0770, shift solenoid e :(

I dont know which solonoid is ‘E’, but i dont think you have to drop trans or valvebody to change it.

Solenoid is easier to do than a trans rebuild that’s for sure.

Is there a transfer case in neutral function of these electronically controlled transfer cases?

I’ll check my codes this afternoon if there are any, no CEL on at the moment but that doesn’t mean anything plus I just had the battery disconnected for a few weeks so anything that would be is gone. Will also be checking rear diff fluid and taking out the third member. I have a feeling that might be the culprit.

So I tested the transmission pump today by putting a hose on the trans cooler. It seems to be pumping fine but does the attached image look like it has small pieces of clutch or something in it?20220420_185757.jpg

Pour it out on to some clean white paper towel to see what's there.

theres little flakes of something. When you drop the pan to check/replace the solonoids, get a pic of the magnets.
