A positive side effect of having the diode: faster phone charging

 

Sweet well just ordered that 4 pack off Amazon, But going to check out the voltage when I go out in a little bit to see what it sits at running! So hopefully they outa come in a few days!

 

Wish I had saw this post a few months ago, That is a fair price. The northstar or whatever they are are stupid expensive, no kind of battery is worth $400 CAD, dont care how warm and fuzzy it makes you feel inside.

 

I got the GM diode for under $2 at O’Reilly

 

Does anybody know if the diode with AGM is a Toyota thing or just Tundra. I had a AGM in my wifes 4runner for a few years and never had any issues.

 

The short answer is it's a Toyota thing.

The less short but light on details answer is, it depends on how you use an AGM. AGM batteries will do fine with a stock Toyota voltage as long as they are only asked to float charge or keep topped up a generally full battery. Float charge is fine for most AGM batteries around 13.5- 13.8 volts - so if you drive your 4Runner around regularly, don't have other major accessories that drain the battery down, the battery will be fine.

However, if you regularly discharge the battery like running a fridge or even an always on dash cam with a voltage sensor, AGMs work best with a cycle charge that is at a higher voltage - 14.4-14.8 depending on the manufacturer. Most (a generalization of recent years) Toyota alternators are controlled to max out at 13.8-14 volts which is ideal for a non-AGM.

Over time, an AGM that is not charged at the correct voltage will have a reduced lifespan and has an increased potential of internal failure.

 

Mine is averaging between 13.4-14v while running. So I'm assuming it should be more than that. I had the same battery in my Tacoma and i believe it was defiantly charging around 14-8-15v I believe.

 

Mine does between 14.2-14.7

 

it may seem cheap and not worth it, but I’ve seen and have had much luck personally with Everstart batteries from Wal-Mart.

Does this affect lithium battery as well? I've been debating going with antigravity lithium battery but I can't get an answer if our alternator would be ok to charge it.

 

So I got that fuse in last Saturday and put it in and been watching my voltage all last week and its ranging from 14-14.75. I've seen it go up to 14.75 is about the max its been. But its kind of been up and down all over the place. I'm assuming that's normal?

 

Yeah fluctuation is ok. If you're too concerned put a monitor to your battery posts and see what you're getting there.

 

Ya I figured the fluctuation is ok. Not too concerned about it and I'm sure it's fine. Was just poking around and was considering picking up one of these to monitor it every once and a while.

No, lithium charge differently. On paper, an Antigravity should be fine with the stock charging as they have a management system built in but I have no personal experience.

Lithium batteries are very rare on Tundras as starting batteries so it’s no surprise you can’t get a clear answer. Cost benefit just isn’t there as weight savings isn’t a consideration for a Tundra and most lithium starter batteries aren’t designed to discharge with accessories and be a starter. Plus the whole collisions and fire thing - it would need a box of some sort.

Those are pretty awesome! I actually just put in a Rago Fabrication mount in the center of my dash last week and took their charger that came with it out and fitted it with a USB fast charger with a voltage meter in the center and it fast charges and its pretty slick!!!

 

Ooh looks good man. If you really wanna be sure tho I think meters at the posts are optimal.

 

Ya I totally agree with ya there, that one on the Rago mount matches my ultra gauge with the exact same numbers as well.

 

Have you noticed that your phone charges faster?

 

It's pretty much the same, I used to use a fast charger that plugged into my cigarette lighter down below my climate controls. I may have lost a few mins on charge time but not that much. I never used a regular 2.1 usb to charge my phone.

 

Man I've noticed a difference but only on long drives.

 

When my S22 is low lets say about 20% and I plug it in, it usually says about 1 hour and 18 minutes to full charge. And that's a 5000maH battery. I'll have to plug it into the factory 2.1V plug on the lower dash to see how much of a difference there is now.

 

I have an S20 Ultra and I love the quick charge capability. Android FTW

 

I just upgraded from my s20 ultra to a s22 ultra! Had it for 2 years and and it was time for a upgrade!

Totally agree, I had one and it did not disappoint!!!

 

Mind if I ask how your electrical is after swapping the fuse to the GM Diode?
