Random stall, restarted and drove fine after

My dealer has several locations, I spoke to the service manager at the main location a couple days ago. I took the truck in yesterday and they pulled the history, the head tech spoke to Toyota, they told him they are aware of the problem both with the stalling and the rear moldings. They told him not to touch the truck if it is running ok otherwise. The engineers are aware of the stalling and are working on it.
He did say that they believe it may be an induction issue. What that means??? Vacuum Leak? Internal engine issues? It may explain though, why some feel like there is no off-idle power when accelerating when the engine does not stall. So for now, we wait for a solution.

22 Crewmax with 7k (currently, the issue happened at ~5k) on the odo, had the same issue. Driving into a field on my place and the truck suddenly died, popped up a message that said "Engine stopped, please pull over when safe." Took it to the dealership, explained the conditions in which it happened.. they kept it for 2 days, on the phone with engineers all day, all that stuff. Said they'd never heard of it, how strange! Gave it back to me, said see ya later.

Didn't really think about it, but now that all of you mention it, it did happen on a bit of an incline. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary though, nothing crazy. Certainly nothing that should have killed the truck. I was under 10mph when it happened, and on private property, but it's a scary thing.

It has only happened one time, no indications of anything failing before or since. Bizarre issue but I'm glad to know I'm not going crazy. Also, the only thing they told me they actually checked was the evap system. They may have done more, but that's all they admitted to.

 

Could it be some kind of malfunctioning crash sensor? Maybe like a safety engine shutoff in the event of a roll over or something?

 

Fuel related? Bad check valve, pump or etc?

 

Software. Should improve on first update, whenever that comes, probably sooner than later given the random stall issue some are experiencing.

 

A little late to the party.. but unfortunately i had the same issue yesterday. Posted a private video - (only viewable with this link) of my dashcam of what happened.



I was not on an incline. I had a full tank of gas. Auto start/stop was not disabled. Completely stock truck going on 1100 miles with no issues. The dash warning image in the video 'Engine stopped shift into P' was taken from another member on here as I didnt have time to snap a picture of my dash. But it was the exact same message so i included it for reference.


Documenting this to share my personal experience only. This is a brand new generation so bugs are expected. It is however a little disheartening since its a 50k+ truck and I had to experience the engine cutting off in the middle of busy traffic with vehicles behind me. That being said, the issue has not happened since and the truck is driving normal. Just wanted to share this and document so i can bring it up with Toyota later.

Really awesome you managed to document this so thoroughly. Helps convince me to buy myself a dashcam, even apart from its utility during car accidents. I have to imagine this is helpful to present to the dealership and prove your experience.

 

I had a loss of power yesterday but the engine didn't shut off. As I pulled away after stopping at a stop sign, the engine just lost power and the truck coasted. I took pressure off gas pedal and pressed again, nothing. After removing pressure from pedal a second time and pressing again truck responded as it should. This is the only time this has occurred for me.

 

this is what I think it is. Dealers had no idea when it happened to me. My codes were a little different. “Parking support brake malfunction visit your dealer” and “check engine reduced engine power” Mine died on the interstate going 35mph. I was accelerating to pass a car on my right with traffic stopped ahead of me. Tundra freaked out spuddered and went into limp mode. After I restarted I’ve had no issues. I think the tundras think they are in danger and shut down. Who knows though. I have read everything from a wastegate to a cracked charcoal filter above the spare tire for the same issues.

 

My driveway out of my house is uphill. Maybe 10% of the time starting the car and going straight uphill I get a very near stall. Not quite, but I always thing the engine is about to die. I hope it's just a cold start issue (Not weather, I'm in a warm part of the country).

 

More and more seem to be experiencing this. Hopefully something the software update will fix.

 

I have a 22 Tundra myself. It has stalled twice on me. Both times as I was approaching a stop light. Foot on gas pedal, took foot off gas to slow down, stall. Was dead before I even touched the brakes.
I went to the dealer the first time. No codes. I have an appt tomorrow to have them look at it again.
I happened to notice one day that the voltage gauge fluctuates up and down big time. I started watching it and realized that I have a rough idle as it compensates. I can recreate the symptom by putting it into drive and holding the brake. In fact one day I caught it just as it almost felt like it was gonna stall. It didn’t but I saw the gauge on the way back up as it seemed to recover.
I am going to point the techs in the direction of a faulty/underpowered alternator or battery.
I believe that this is what is creating the stall. I will update this post after I get some answers from the dealer.

I wonder if Toyota outsmarted themselves with the start stop system in this configuration somehow

 

Happened to me on the highway going ~40 mph. Construction zone, no shoulder, message said same thing everyone is saying here - “power steering out, find a safe place to pull over” etc. Turned right back on with no issues, haven’t had an issue since. Dealer said same thing - never seen it or heard of it, “not an issue to be concerned about”. They said the battery voltage was low and may have been the cause. “Probably happened because it sat in a lot for so long” - even though I drove the car off the lot a week after it was built…they have no idea what’s going on ha.

 

If the battery was charging when the engine starts to stall it makes sense that the gauge moved down. The position in the picture is about 12V. When the battery doesn’t need charging, the alternator is turned off so the gauge goes from 14 (middle) to 12 V. It will move to 14 V when coasting in some situations and if you apply throttle, it will go to 12 V. I don’t think battery is an issue for stalling otherwise the engine would have a hard time starting back up.

 

So I haven’t had a stall, but I’ve had a dead pedal a few times. Come up to a stop sign or light, start to take off, it’ll start to move and then you can feel the truck fall on its face for a few seconds, nothing happens. After that it’ll drive like normal.

 

Did you come to a complete stop (3 sec ore more) or kind of roll through? I noticed sometimes it feels like it needs to downshift of you roll through stops and doesn’t give power while it’s shifting.

 

Damn. That seems like a pretty big safety issue.

 

Was the truck on any kind of incline? That seems to be one aggravating factor.

Odd thing happened to me today in a parking lot. The parking lot was extremely full today so I was going aisle to aisle looking for a space. As I was making the (relatively) tight 180° left turn into the into the next aisle of parking spots and my truck just dies in the middle of the turn. Same error on the dash "Engine stopped. Shift into P" and then it also flashed another error, something to the effect "Steering Pressure Low" (may not have been the exact words). CEL light was illuminated. I didn't get a picture of it because it was a busy lot and I just wanted to restart the truck and get it out of traffic.

The truck restarted fine and I parked without issue. After I was done with my errand, I found a way out of the way area of the parking lot and made a series of tight 180° turns (wheel nearly at full lock) and it never happened again. I never got a notification on my Toyota app, as with my one previous CEL about the Radar Cruise, and there's no history of the event in my Toyota app.

Very strange. Ghost in the machine. I'm at 9k miles. I'll mention it to my dealer at my 10k service.

Just posting my experience as others have to add it to the internet file.

Edit: I can pull my dashcam footage too and post it. The only thing it'll show is me turning...nothing exciting...but I'll pull the footage this weekend & upload it for posterity.

 

Strange! Sounds very similar to my situation. Lets hope a software update will fix the issue. I'm 1k miles more since that initial incident and still hasn't happened since. What a fluke..

 

My old school brain thought: "Well...maybe I'm low on power steering fluid for some reason." I was thinking the fluid was low and it might have all sloshed to one side of the reservoir during the turn and then triggered some type of safety feature to prevent damage to the rack & pinion from low fluid. [SHURGS]

Nope. The 2022 Tundra has Electric Power Steering. Imagine my surprise when I popped the hood, scratching my head as I looked for a power steering fluid reservoir. For about 3 mins, I felt like an idiot. Then pulled out the owners manual.

 

I’m definitely having the same stalling issue… if the truck is under a slight load and at very low crawling speed i can get it to stall by simply give it a quick throttle blip and it will stall almost every time I do this… it’s almost like if It had a standard transmission and I didn’t push the clutch pedal in quick enough before the engine stalls from going to slow…
Truck started doing it around 1500km and I now have 5000…
Never leaves me stranded and as long as I’m super smooth with the throttle I can stop it from stalling…

Im also experiencing a small buck at cruising speeds when Im very lightly feathering the throttle almost like I’m just to say applying pressure on the throttle pedal to slow down then it will give me a small little jerk…
Hopefully they update this soon kind of annoying…

Interesting you mentioned a "buck", I have noticed that my truck regularly "bucks" or leerches often when starting from a stop. At first, I thought it was me inducing the behavior because I wasn't used to driving a new vehicle. I have concluded that it doesn't matter how hard I try to accelerate gently, sometimes I just leerch, like I pressed the gas too hard. Anyone else notice this?

 

It's a blessing and a curse that your issue is so repeatable. I'm assuming you've mentioned it to your dealership? Curious what they've said about it? I tried to duplicate this a couple of times in my neighborhood, but no luck. My stall was just that one time and I've tried to repeat it. I can mention it to my dealership, but unless they can repeat it...they usually just kinda shrug it off.

I do have a buck when first shifting into Drive, but I'm pretty sure it's transmission lag. The transmission seems to take about 1 to 1.5 seconds longer than "normal" to shift into Drive than other vehicles I'm used to. Granted, that 1-1.5 seconds isn't very much, but it's noticeable. Enough so that I have to consciously delay myself from pressing the gas otherwise I'll bring up the RPMs and the transmission will dump those RPMs into Drive thus lurching the truck forward.

That being said, I've never noticed a "buck" when accelerating from a stop while already in drive.

 

Had the exact thing happened to me but when I braked really hard the engine shut off and said power steering low.
