Thanks for the clip on the oil control rings. You're saying the diesel oil works well for you? Did you have a similar issue or thats just what your doing knowing the driving you do?

I like it because it is a pretty darn good oil for $3 per quart. I certainly don’t feel bad for changing it often, too.
As far as viscosity, you can literally run whatever you desire and feel comfortable with. Hopefully once your mild oil consumption issue is resolved you can keep it under control by doing shorter oil change intervals. Cheers!

Also, while at it, do you mind changing your PCV valve? Between the engine flush and PCV valve you should very likely be in the green.

Lots of moisture being retained from the short trips, when you finally do a long trip, you boil the water out and burn off a little oil. Try one long trip a week and see what happens to your oil consumption.

I like the spirit of ‘cheap or free’ fixes. The question is what would be cheaper these days - burn some gas on long trips or change your oil more frequently.
P.S. You can change your oil filter every 5-10k miles if your oil stays clean with short drain intervals (2.5-3k). Nothing to filter out of the system.

Nice to see someone else use diesel oil. Although I use 5w-40 Vavoline premium blue which is also SN rated on top of all the other diesel certs. I been getting it on sale at my local Napa store, comes out to be $5.50 a quart lol.

With those conditions I would change much sooner. 4-5K miles. Oil is cheap, engines not so much.

My 5.7 is too dumb to read labels lol. I maybe lost 0.1 MPG comparing my March totals vs March of 2021 when I was still on 0w20.

Been using 0W-20 Amsoil Signature ... Switching to 5W-30 Mobil 1. 0W-20 Mobil 1 always seemed to create a lot more engine noise, largely my reasoning going from Mobil 1 --> Amsoil in the first place, engine sounded pristine. But the price difference between the two (Amsoil and Mobil 1) is unparalleled. Read going from 0W-20 to 5W-30 is key with the noise with any brand, preference is Mobil 1 tho.

OCI every 5k are expensive. Likely will use the 5W-30 on my wifes 2018 Malibu 1.5 too.

Can I get some feedback please? Just toss me a like if you agree. Response not needed.

    Thanks!

Whatever this forum told me to do
feedback = it makes no difference.

    Really.

I use Kirkland 0w-20 every 5k. Blackstone test was awesome.

These engines are designed with 5w30 specs. All over the world it is 5/30 in the US 0w20.

These engines are designed for any available oil depending on your temperature conditions. I’ve been very happy running my 15w40 Dino oil.

Was this really a question? I don't know whether to laugh or cry, haha.

At any rate, I've always used 0-20 in my 2014 1794. Now, at 137k, I have coolant leaking into cylinder 8 and need to have head gaskets replaced. So I'm now of the opinion, it doesn't matter what kind of oil you use, as long as it's close in viscosity and changed often. No, not blaming the gasket failure on the oil, just don't have faith that doing everything "by the book" will prevent issues with a shitty engine.

If you believe that chart, 0W-20 is good to the same max temperature as the other weights.

Using 15w-40 now lol. Got some delo 400 xsp for super cheap at Walmart on sale. Big 2.5 gal jug. Put that in and will be mixing what’s left with the previous leftovers premium blue 5w-40 on the sienna before our trip next month.

The only thing i wonder, is the vvti programmed any differently around the world to account for 5w-30 spec?

ive used both oils over the years, i get .2 mpg better with 0w-20

Agreed, when I do work 5 minutes away, especially in cooler weather, my oil cap looks milky. Driving like an idiot helps burn off the moisture though if long trips are not available.

Re: viscosities, I do 0w20 mobil1 synthetic every 9-10k miles. No oil loss after 120k miles.

My Camry did lose a quart every oil change though ever since she was new. She wasn't leaking. Maybe her 4cyl was thirsty. Exhaust pipe was clean as well, perhaps cat converter was taking it all in? (Dont have her anymore, traded for vensa)

I’ve been tempted to switch to 5w30 especially being supercharged, but I keep coming back to the cold start. The majority of wear happens at cold start so the sooner you get any oil regardless of viscosity where it has to be, the better. This is where 0w20 would be beneficial.

Are you in Canada or Siberia and 5w30 was not flowing good enough? Parking indoors or having a block heater are both viable solutions.

Yeah man, Siberia. All I know is it flows better when cold. That’s just the nature of a thinner oil. I can’t say how much better, I haven’t studied it. Maybe it’s negligible :notsure: Still a point worth considering.

Yes, but Mobil was using 20,000 mile oil changes for this test in order to showcase their Extended Performance oil, which is designed for 20,000 mile oil change interval. Quite likely there would be less varnish if the oil change interval was decreased.

The 0W test is performed at -35 degrees C. The 5W test is performed at -30 degrees C. Unless you are expecting to start in temps below -30 degrees C, then 5W or 0W are generally interchangeable.

The non-polar synthetic component of the Mobil 1 base oil does not provide enough dissolving power to keep the polymer viscosity modifier in solution at engine operating temp. Hence it coats your engine internals with yellow film.

At -35 degrees C and lower your gasoline might not evaporate readily and provide enough vapor pressure to ignite. That is also why engine block heaters are popular in colder climates.
