So many cel issues with this new tundra. This truck is too computerized and it doesn't look like much testing was done. Toyota is known for their reliable engines but not software development, which I think is extremely lacking in this rollout.

I can make $8000 on my 2018. Its crazy. I was excited about it back in Dec. But then I started doing research and even started a thread on it to help me make a decision. For me they took too much truck utility out of the new Tundra that I need and some other things I am not crazy about. I ended up researching the F150 - Tremor. The Ford dealer matched the price on my truck but they can't get me a truck within 6 months. And the thought of going to a Ford is not appealing.

That job would be way to boring. But the trucks still drive fine even with “reduced power” unless you expect full pedal down turbo performance.

Are you sure you are not a former car salesman? You are doing really well!

Tell the customer anything so long as you don’t lose your sale over it. Tell them the turbos definitely don’t go out, even if both were to go out tell them that “it’s fine to drive like that.”

Tell them if turbo goes out it, it definitely “won’t go into limp mode”.

When it does go into limp mode tell them it’s “fine to drive it around like that”.

When they complain about performance in limp mode ask them why they were expecting “full pedal down performance.”

If a Customer disagrees, tell them they have unrealistic expectations. Reiterate that this situation "is just fine". I mean who needs their truck to tow something or drive over 40 mph anyways?

You got to say whatever it takes man! Always be closing!

But they keep on selling 'em. If the problem can happen at 3K miles it can certainly happen at 10K or 30 K. Enjoy driving one! Toyota knowingly peddling junk.

Is the turbo issue is software related?

    or 36,001 miles...

I know I know, Powertrain warranty is 60K miles, but some of you fan boys are putting a hard sell on this having nothing to do with Toyota's "bulletproof powertrain".

"Relax it's only the wastegate, not the engine"
"Relax it's not made by Toyota, its a a foreign supplier"
"Relax it's not the turbo, it's only the software"
"Relax it's only the actuator, not the turbo."

Let's put this "powertrain" discussion in simpler terms:
    TRUCK NO GO = BAD

Not that crazy at all. The 2nd gen Tundra is the most dependable truck on the road, and Toyota just stopped making them. If you value your time over any feature a truck may or may not have, and if your first criterion is a rig that is reliable over the long term, there is no better choice.

If I had an issue with my 2022 Tundra, its my issue and mine alone working with Toyota to correct. Over 1300 miles without issue at this time with 12/7 production date.

What I would not do without having any skin in the game (Owning a 2022 Tundra) is continually stirring the pot over the current situation. To me, not sure what the motivation or value with continued beating the drum.

I also would not bash Toyota publicly if I did have a truck with a major issue. Large Corporations scan public media - its a fact. Patience and a calm demeanor go a long way towards positive resolution.

While there are for sure documented issues, all have been corrected by Toyota or in the correction process.

IMO, the intent of this thread is for those with Turbo issues share experience. What is nature of the issue, how long (Miles) owned and Toyota's response and time to repair. Has the same problem occurred again?

Sharing this information with owners accomplishes two positive results. Helps other owner to identify the issue and then provide Toyota with this information and also share what the Root Cause and process fix Toyota completed eliminating the issue?

I'm hearing rumors saying Toyota now has a software based solution to the turbo issue.
If that's true, then why did Toyota actually replace turbos?

If so, did Toyota mistakenly replace turbos when the actual issue is software? Or will new software just cover up a mechanical issue?

If you try to cover up a hardware issue with a software fix eventually the hardware WILL fail so you’ll be back to square one.

There's been some issues but TFL has one of the earliest builds and been working the snot out of it with no issue. I'm still wondering why it is one side only that is causing codes. Supplier must have bad machining for something that are mirror images, WTF.

I can't fathom why it is only one side if it's a software problem? Whatever, I'm just curious without a horse in the race. I'll need to replace the '19 someday and 19-20MPG consistently from the Sequoia certainly has appeal.

Good point. Don't believe these are sequential turbos, believe they are parallel and virtual mirrors of each other.

Bashing or communicating - its all in the delivery.

People are more apt to listen and work with someone who is polite and sticks to the facts. Agree its a communication thing.

And the point is communicating the issue from those who actually have it vs. those who do not own a car and just fan the flames

I would like to communicate to Toyota that there is $70K in a bank account that will be theirs as soon as they cop to what is actually wrong so we can make an informed purchase. If that ain't soon, that money goes to Ford who's F-150's are not experiencing a rash a 1st month powertrain failures.

I would like to communicate to all '22 owners (Hadelson included) that I wish the best for all of you and honestly hope you don't get bit.

Hmm, I am not sure what one calls the outcry and anger expressed by those that were upset over Rivian’s price increases, but whatever it was, it got Rivian to reverse their price increase on existing orders.

    Moral of the story?

When dealing with the service team at your dealership, I always recommend being polite because they have no ability to rectify this issue at the moment. They would love to be able to fix it and have you go away happy. (Having worked at a dealership in a service advisor role for many years, I fully sympathize with them on this issue.)

But on the internet, it seems as if those that scream the loudest get action.

Always good to be the great communicator. Good luck as this is a personal decision.

Just for the record, I have this for a fun ride. Lots of various documented recalls and TSB's for mechanical issues between common components with the F150 Drive train. Some are F150 only and other Mustang only. I also rent and drive a lot of vehicles and have had numerous F150's. Very nice but not on par with the new Tundra but that's my opinion. The 5.0 and Eco boost are solid power plants, but both have documented issues. MPG is solid and actually better then where my Tundra sits at this time although I have a very short work commute------3 miles to the office detracting local MPG.

Fortunately, these go from Flat Rock to Roush and are fully worked over eliminating most of the issues. The double overlapping warranties take care of just about anything that happens although I have not had any issues.
    Roush 3.jpg

Best of luck to you and your future F150 purchase. Now can we move on back to Turbo issues.

So tech replaced turbo through wheel well.

You can see the open actuator in the second pic.

Original CEL at 54 miles was turbo waste gate stuck open, limp mode, and parking brake malfunction.

    Great share! Thank you!
Did the Tech tell you anything specific about what caused the what gate to stick open?

Others on here will know a lot more, I could be wrong, but I'm, pretty sure I noted something that does not look right. With everything is powered off, I'm pretty sure the wastegate should not be sitting there half open like that.

In that 2nd pic, I believe that is the wastegate itself. I'm pretty sure it should not be sitting half open like that if the motor is off. Most wastegates open against a spring and without the actuator pushing it open, the wastegate should fully close and returnto its closed fully seated position based on the spring pressure alone.

Only a guess, but I would think it would take some serious mechanical binding to freeze it open against a strong spring trying to close it. Multiple potential binding points too. At the wastegate hinge, the actuator arm linkage or the actuator itself and probably other locations
