A LOT has changed in the last few weeks with the Tundra, and there's very little that has carried over from phase one. In fact, just the roof rack setup, wheels, and tires are the same.

    PHASE ONE

With just 4 days before our most recent trip, we got the Tundra ready to take off road. 7,200 miles later, and I'm home! There's still plenty to do, but I figured a mid-build thread would be worth doing. I'll update as more is added! Some of the stuff is reviewed below.

We started with a 2022 Limited with the TRD Off Road package:

And are here as of 3/2/22:

    Complete-

Wheels: Method 705 18x9 +18 offset (20% off with this link)

Roof rack: Prinsu with 40" cutout
Roof light bar: Heretic Studio 40" light bar

Westcott Designs lift info (PHASE ONE)

The lift is a preload collar from Westcott Designs. It works by adding a spacer collar at the base of the spring rather than a spacer to the top of the strut, which keeps all of the factory geometry. It's much better than a traditional spacer.

Any time you add compression to a spring, you're going to change the ride. It's fine for road and light off road use, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything tougher than maintained dirt roads. Washboard roads get old quickly with the firmer ride.

Unfortunately the stock suspension (TRD OR package) on these '22 Tundras has pretty terrible flex, and since Westcott reuses this in their lift, it still has terrible flex. You'll lift tires regularly.

I'd recommend a max tire size of 35". It fits well, and is the max that will fit in the spare tire location. We tried 37s (see the picture below), but with even the slightest flex you'll get rubbing. This is as far as we could go before it bottomed out:

The tires in the picture are Toyo RT, but we switch to Toyo ATIII. I chose them because they were the only tires available! I actually really like them, and they seem to perform a little better off road and in the snow than the KO2s I had previously - albeit with maybe fractionally more road noise. We'll have to see how they wear over time.

Wheels are the 705s from Method Race Wheels, and are fantastic. Not only do they look great, but they're also bead grip wheels... plus you can get 20% off! The bead grip wheels have ridges and oversized safety humps that help hold the bead of the tire better. This means you're less likely to lose the bead when you air down to low pressures. In this picture I'm at 13psi:

EDIT: Added pictures of the wheel poke to show how the offset/wheel/tire combo stick out:

Nice! Thanks for sharing here (and YouTube and IG and Patreon). I'm still waiting for my Limited allocation to come from one of ~half a dozen dealers I'm on the list with. Love your choices and will use much of your research on my truck.

Did Heretic say when they would release those lights on their website? The amber fogs and that hidden lightbar look great on the new front end!

Hopefully you get something in soon!

Paint match. It cost $500 for the three pieces that make up the mustache with me removing the pieces. Wrapping would have been a couple of hundred less, but wouldn't last as long.

I just know that it's soon. They asked me for the pictures to put on the website yesterday!

@RevereOverland are the CBI bumpers steel, or are they planning an aluminum choice?

When you get your wiring sorted, I'd love to see a video on where you're putting the Redarc modules as well as how you're running wiring. And is your 2nd battery in the engine bay or elsewhere?

Aluminum will be an option "eventually"

Right now the battery is in the back foot well, and the REDARC components are mounted under the seat. I'm planning a seat delete, and will probably move the REDARC stuff to the deleted seat back, batteries into the under seat storage, and compressor in the back footwell. The REDARC stuff is a perfect fit under the seats, but it's tough adding or changing up the wiring on the RedVision system with it mounted down there - everything needs to be pulled out to add an output.

Thanks! I wish I could make it, but it doesn't quite line up with the schedule!

Thanks for the 20% code! My buddy owns a tire shop and he couldn’t even get them for less from his wholesaler. Ended up getting the 703‘s. Did your factory TPMS switch over fine to the new wheel?

You've changed my mind on the new Tundra. I'm still not a big fan of the rear but yours looks top notch! I'm sure it'll continue to grow on me.
