I know you've heard it all before but I am new to it. My 09 ST factory TRD dual exhaust is a little louder than I prefer but I can live with that. What bugs me is the newly discovered 'Drone'. It is prevalent a around 100kph (60) and isn't even there at another 1000 rpm higher. I am more for fuel economy so I am not going to drive along ay 3000rpm. Is there an easy fix? I guess it's a muffler shop job, right. The tips do 90s so not as easy as sliding a resonator in.

The TRD system on my crewmax didn't necessarily drone but I had this horrible helicopter type sound. I added an h-pipe just forward of the mufflers and it stopped the helicopter sound.

I don't really get that. Should have been a third pic showing where the exhaust goes. Doesn't look like it applies to my dual exhaust system.

I used 2 of the resonators on a 2018 with TRD exhaust. I don’t know if the tailpipes are routed the same as your 2009. They crisscross each other. Picture gives you an idea.

Worked well on canceling drone, but not cheap. It will temper the exhaust sound too.

Way cool, thanks for sharing. I always wondered if you could put 2 resonators on the TRD dual exhaust.

You can, but the driver’s side has a slightly different angle than the passenger side. I had to buy them as a TRD specific pair from Keith.

OK. Ignore this. I am now understanding the Helmholtz concept of an enclosed pipe. Snow is melting away and will get under the truck today to get some picks of my exhaust setup.
Here's a pic of the twin tail pipes coming out of the muffler and turning left and right at the spare.

It's a pissoff I feel the need to deal with this (it's pretty damn loud). I have owned both an F250 Turbo Diesel and a Ram 1500 Hemi and never had this.

The exact reason I ended up selling a 2004 4Runner V8. The mileage and the drone.

Drone is a reality of these V8s and dual exhausts make it worse. Find a stock single out 2007-2013 exhaust system - they're laying around everywhere and so worthless that someone might even pay you to take it away. At some point (I think 2014) Toyota shortened the mufflers and the stock trucks got louder - all I know is my Dad's 2010 is much quieter than my 2021. I bought the resonator for mine because it droned at 1500-1700 RPM and I hated it. The overall quality of the truck feels much higher now because it eliminates the vibration you feel from the drone.

The resonator will solve your problem, but the cost is significant.

So kind of curious, can you use the Helmholtz resonator and still stuff a 35" tire under the truck?

Mine used to do that, as well. About 5 miles of my commute is at 55 mph and it had the helicopter sound. After about 40,000 miles, it went away. My exhaust has completely mellowed out and you can't even hear it half the time now.

Yeah, you have some play in where you can mount the resonator it looks like. The real issue with mounting a 35 is clearing the shackles and cutting the guides I think.

Sweet, I'm going to plan on ordering one of these @dirtydeeds exhaust's before the sale is over this month. Just been really up in the air about which one to get even after listening to so many sound clips I'm still undecided. Like I want a nice noise to it but I don't want it to be obnoxious or drone on the highway! The stock muffler is just way to quiet, plus if I'm only getting 9 mpg i want to hear the expensive gas I'm blowing out the tailpipe

    This guy explains it.
NoDrone Resonators from Synapse Engineering - YouTube
He says the length determines the RPMs it covers. He did not say wether a short piece covers lower or higher drone. Mine is the typical 1800 to 2500 range. I finally got to the front of the truck this morning to find that my twin exhausts run into one muffler at the front. So, I guess I would need two. He also said that the farther forward the more cancellation you get.
