Do you mean not on the same circuit or not the same outlet?
Disposals draw a crap ton of amps……. Loose wire nuts or corroded connections can cause that. Sometimes the “tang”? Inside the socket on the light gets pressed down to far and doesn’t make good contact, and sometimes heat and corrosion can occur on that mating surface. I had to replace soooo many heat lamp sockets for this exact issue at McDowells.

I'm guessing the same circuit but different outlet. The disposal switch is on one side of the sink and the light switch is on the other.

Pretty sure it's LED. Normal style bulb you'd find in a lamp but screws up into the ceiling.

My guess would be EMI? Do you have an incandescent or cfl anywhere for some quick testing?

It could be simple voltage drop as disposal cycles too. Easiest way to fix that is tie into an independent circuit for lights which isn’t the same as the disposal.

    How old is the disposal?

Want to confirm if it's on the same circuit first? Throw the breaker that makes the light turn off. Then check if the dishwasher is off also.

Electricians residential and commercial tend to do some nonsensical shit sometimes (no offense to anyone in the industry), but even worse stuff happens when people call others in to remodel, or remodel themselves. It's sometimes hard to tell what is what. The first GFI outlet in my top-floor master bathroom's circuit is in the half-bath on the middle floor. Why? Who the hell knows. The panel has that circuit labeled as "hallway". The hell?

But that said, the boiler in my espresso machine will cause the can lights in my kitchen flicker rhythmically when it's heating up, the tiniest, barely visible flash, about 1 per second. I have a mix of LED and halogen on the ceiling for, uh, reasons, and they both do it ever so slightly. Relatively new house. Definitely on separate but adjacent circuits. All circuits test out to be wired correctly.

Do you really need/use the dispsal? They are pretty gross and make plumbing issues down the main line worse by sending lots of stuff that normally wouldn’t, or shouldn’t go down the drain.

The disposal is brand new. We don't use it a ton though. I just want to know if this is going to cause a fire otherwise I'm not that concerned. It's a minor annoyance but if it's easy to fix I'll do it.

Oh boy! Somebody didn't heat this bearing enough so it got cold before it was slid all the way on.

    20220301_211032.jpg

So we get to take turn tightening the pusher bolts, and then beating the hell out of it. Too far on to take off, and reheat.

Agree with you on that. I had to go and fix a disposal because it was locked up, turned out the lady's parakeet died and guess where she decided to dispose of it. Yup down the sink. Surprisingly the lil bird did lock up the disposal but after getting the bird out and some manual cranking on the disposal it worked. I just use strainers

That was a rental so my only gratification I got out of it was saving the homeowners from buying and installing a new disposal.

This. It can only be voltage drop or loose ground / bad contact. I don't think its voltage/amps. It's a bad connection and the disposal vibrates.

This is 98% it. It could be something else, but not likely. Your sink light is almost always tied onto the same circuit as the GD. Didn't you redo your kitchen a few months back?

That's a great question because recent work leans toward over current and if it just started happening, loose connection or fault.

Exactly. The joint in the box coulda been jostled, or the screw not tightened enough on the switch.

And that’s why all newer houses that are wired correctly have dedicated circuits for both the DW and GD, eh? But yup, I agree, sounds like a weak connection in this case

edit: it may not be the same everywhere, but dedicated circuits are standard here

When we re did our kitchen every appliance got its own circuit. In our next house, light in the bath failed but there was power. It was a ground in a box in the kitchen, above the ceiling, no access. Well, a hammer got access.

The drywallers sheeted over my plans and inspection card once. Inspector showed up while I was having a WTF talk with them, then they all stood back and watched me retrieve them with my framing hammer. Just glad I remembered about where they were inside the wall

That is classic and also, WTF drywallers? In my case, I had identified the problem and had a idea of the route of wires to the box. Electrician worked for a warranty company and had to call his boss about the repair. He located the general location of the box but could not touch my ceiling. I told him that was not a problem and grabbed a similar framing hammer and made him a hole.

Disposals were created by drain technicians to ensure they'll have work to do in every house. I always told customers just pretend it isn't there. I'm strongly considering getting rid of mine when I replace my sink.

It's still gonna be on there more than likely. It's even in the code that it's acceptable to put the sink light on the disposal circuit since you're already hitting the switch with a home run and the sink light switch is right there too.

Wtf. That's against code. Every box has to be accessible. Also, a ground shouldn't cause anything to fail. They're only there for fault current if an uh oh happens.

I thought the purpose of a garbage disposal was to get rid of food waste and prevent raccoons and other critters going through your garbage and tearing it apart?

The local pig farmer hasn't come by my parent's house since the 1960s I was told. They supposedly visited every week to empty the food trash pail secured underground with a heavy ass lid.

    Here's an example...
