2WD Diff advice (LSD)

    My 06' DC is getting ready for a big service in two weeks. (Calipers, rotors, pads, rack bushings, trans service, and diff service).
    My question is, I have 4 quarts of Mobil 1 75w-90 Gear oil and some LSD Additive, now I keep reading crazy stories but nothing really definitive on any forum. Turk is at 152k miles, and I'm not looking to blow my rear end up. Any advice if the fluid I chose will be good or not would be kismet.

    Go easy on me lol

    I just realized that I wasn't clear in the post, sorry about that.
    my question is, is the Oil of choice decent for the rear end.
    I'm reading all conflicting experiences. Some respond well, others have complaints.

    If it’s a clutch pack lsd, they usually suggest non synthetic fluid

    I'm not really sure, manual states 90w or 80w90. But that stuff is near impossible to find. Any suggestions?

    That's funny because I went to get 75-90 and all they had was 80-90. And 75-140...:)

    Sounds like a lot of good maintenance going on. The truck will appreciate that.

    I ran Mobil 1 for years with no issues. It comes with the LSD in it, so you don't need to add any.
    I switched to Lucas conventional and it seemed to hook up better. It also has the LSD additives in it, so you don't need to add any.
    Valvoline 80W-90 is available at most auto parts stores but does not come with LSD - you can add your little bottle to that.

    I don't think you can make a bad choice here.

    I have the same truck, 06 2WD DC w/ LSD. . . I used Lucas last time and have had no problems.
    I think it's hard to go wrong as long as you follow specs and use a reputable brand.

    I used Valvoline 80w90 and added a bottle of additive at 158k on my 05', no issues.

    I used this and no issues. 2004 DC 2WD with LSD. I will say it doesn’t seem to hook up very well.

    Realistically at that mileage there is a good chance your clutch packs are shot and it doesn't matter what oil you use. I would do some testing on your diff before fussing over additives.

    I use virgin olive oil and 2 tablespoons of lard as lsd additive for the fatty burnouts. 240k miles with no trouble.





    Kidding, I run Lucas conventional. 75-90 is fine.

    I run this too but I know I've heard running full sythetic doesn't really do anything but I didn't realize it may make the LSD perform worse. Maybe I should switch to conventional just for the rear diff.
    I did a burnout before I got new tires and wheels and I know both wheels spun. That's the only indication of my LSD working that I have although I've never found the "LSD Additive required" sticker either.

    I ended up doing the rear end sooner, just to do a little inspection on the under carriage.

    I ended up putting in the M1 75w90 with a 4 oz. Shot of Yukon Limited Slip additive. I'm glad I did, as the old fluid wasn't murky, but I was fairly dirty and quite dark. I'm About 60 miles in and I'm satisfied. No chattering or noise, hooks well, and seems a good bit lighter on its feet.

    I did, however, run into another problem, carrier bearing is worn and wobbly, along with a slight leak coming from my shaft seal in the trans. Huzzah! I'm less than excited about this one.


    Also thanks to all for your input! I have lots of options now for future services!

    If you dig around there is a carrier bearing part number to order it direct from Spicer. That's who makes the Toyota version and its less than half price if things haven't changed.

    When I replaced my carrier bearing I had a slight leak at the trans. I didn't have parts to mess with it, left it alone, forgot about it, and here I am nearly 10 years later without a problem. Hopefully yours isn't too bad, but smart to replace the seal. From what J understand it isn't hard to do.

    I did in fact go to drivetrain america and ask for the part number to my Vin.
    Lo and behold, found the spicer carrier bearing Amazon for $66 and wouldn't you know it? Stamped Toyota right on the bushing.
    Part number for it is,
    Spicer: 211750-1X

    Also, not for nothing but I ended up grabbing the MOTUL 90pa and redoing my rear end. The Mobil 75w90 with the additive was great until it reached 85 degrees down here in Tucson. I started to get noise, and it seemed to not want to hook all that well.

    My local go to shop for Tundra and Sequoia strongly recommends conventional Lucas SAE 80-90 heavy duty gear oil with 4 oz of Motorcraft friction modifier for the rear limited slip diff.

    Lucas 80W-90 heavy duty oil comes with friction modifier included so adding extra isn't really necessary. That's what many of us with LSDs already use, including myself.

    I read some threads around here that showed some tests were Lucas gear oil didn't do too great compared to other brands. Mobil 1 did a lot better than Lucas in several tests, but I also understood those tests to be a little old. Anyone know of any recent gear oil tests?

    I don't have a LSD in my Tundra, but on my 08 Tacoma I used Lucas and it skipped bad even though it has the LSD additive in it. I drained it and went back in with standard gear oil and a tube of the additive and it didn't skip at all. I know some people swear by the Lucas, but just providing my experience.
