Stay on this site, and you may as well keep working....as I have stated before this website has cost me a little over 7 grand, and I have yet to touch my suspension or tires...

Tried the strap wrench along with these. That socket style is the culprit and that conventional filter tool is too large

That is the lube that comes on the O ring in the cellophane package that's with the Toyota factory oil filter. I put a smidge of engine oil on it right before I twist it all onto the housing.

I refered to a rubber strap wrench which is fully adjustable...

Anyway, it looks like the regular metal removal tool should still work? If oly engaging the flats and not the ears..?

Fairly beefy impact driver as well?

You were right about the space. Gonna need to get it in the air. I used that cap style, it broke the ears and made the hole. The metal strap was too large

The first time I changed the oil I had to use an impact driver rated for 180lb-ft to remove the filter housing. And it struggled a bit

I was using an 18" breaker bar, but felt uneasy with the lever arm effect and potential for breaking something. The impact does a better job of keeping the torque application central to the filter cap.

So the removal wrench is rounding the flats on the filter housing?

    Got a picture of it?

Maybe a more precise removal tool could have better fit?

    Life.
It happens to all of us. Had a similar thing happen on my 13. Didn’t think I’d ever get that damn thing off.
On the bright side the tough stuff makes the best memories.
Nothing remarkable or memorable of all the other oil changes I have done but I won’t forget that one.

    Hahaha. Not even close.

140k miles. Ears had already been broken off and I'm sure the filter had not been changed in little while due to the difficulty I had removing.

I'll see if I can remember the brand of removal tool I purchased.

Deep Breath... I know it sucks, but it could be worse. You'll get through it, and learn from it. Don't let this ruin your week.
This is coming from a guy that is realistic. Some people say I am negative and need to see the positive side rather than the negative side all the time. I tell them I look at both sides and hope for the best but am prepared for the worst (if possible)

But all that ^^^ is behind ya. Get the aluminum cap and get it installed and torqued appropriately. Plan to do engine oil changes yourself and you'll never have to post about this again.

And for the record this here lil' Toyota truck board is CHALK FULL of similar stories to yours. And they ALL have the same root cause. Glad you're getting is solved and not looking back.

As a point of reference. I have done all my own engine oil changes since September of 1985. I've never had this problem. From here on you won't either.

I cant figure which removal tool I got, but it is a simple, black painted, cast aluminum piece, with a 3/8s drive.

If a beefy enough impact is not available, maybe a breaker bar with (light) pressure from a jack to keep your wrench seated.

You'll get the damn thing removed and replaced with and aluminum. You'll have a beer, and laugh about the whole thing...hopefully

Oh. Just have to source the new cap then?

When you get the replacement, be sure to swap over the perforated tube (unless yours comes with the correct size). There are a couple of tabs to bend up or down (dont remember) and then just twist out. Mine came with a little baby riser for some other engine.

All I know is I am starting to regret the tundra I had a taco that I put 233k miles on with no issues until I got too wild and started (intentionally) breaking shit.
I have out 50k on this thing with problem after problem ( most of which are self-induced though admittedly)

Please dont beat on your filter housing with a BFH. Seems like an excellent way to crack the engine block which would be a REALLY bad day.
