2014-2021 Front/Rear Anytime Camera Mod - FRAC Harness

Thanks. I was thinking about this and I believe there could be room to put a switch in the top of the lower center panel. So the panel in the last picture you showed. If you reach under the "ledge" there is about 1 to 2 inches of surface area that a switch or two could be mounted in. They would be very inconspicuous there as well.

 

I looked at AOB SPST switches and they will definitely work for the bypass but I didn't go with an illuminated switch because the normal or "enabled" position is the on position and the "bypass" position is the off position. So in normal operation, the switch will always be illuminated. Not a big deal, just personal preference.

Don't confuse the "anytime" nomenclature of the FRAC design with the motion bypass. Motion bypass allows you to use all GPS functions while in motion. It does this by turning off the Vehicle In Motion (VIM) signal and making the GPS think the vehicle is stationary. However the switch should not be left in bypass (off) except when needed to enter data because the GPS also uses the VIM to aid its calculations for speed and thus how fast to move the vehicle symbol on the moving map. So the moving map and route guidance will not operate properly if the bypass is left on.

The anytime phrase refers to the fact that you can switch either front or rear camera video to the display at any time. It is totally independent of the motion bypass logic.

Thats a great idea! I will measure mines when I get home. How many inches does it have to be to clear the switch? Another thing is to see whats in the inside of that ledge also, make sure a sw is even mountable.

 

It's pretty easy to pull that panel and the one above it. They are just held in place by clips. I think there would be adequate clearance and the switch needs a hole less than an inch in diameter. I'll have to check the dimensions.

Based on all the info I could find on-line, I am 100% sure that the FRAC harness will work with the non-navi systems. The two connectors used by the FRAC harness on the Navi units are identical to those on the Non-Navi systems. For that matter, the FRAC harness will work on all latest Gen. Tacomas and 4-Runners as well.

...looks like I've got some fab work comin' up...

 

Come on fellas... let's make this happen! Then we can get Tex to make a wire harness for the stereo!

 

@MikeyMTBs, check out this post in my Audio Mod thread. I won't be making audio harnesses because you can already buy them. All you have to do is connect your truck wiring to the harness pigtails as described in the thread, and you've got a plug and play solution!

 

@TundraTex , what kind of connections do we look for on the front camera? Will the front camera be PnP for video and power?

Can't wait for this so I can finally have a front camera!!!!

 

@BlueBottle the FRAC harness has a female RCA Jack to accept a Male RCA Plug from the front camera. The Male RCA is pretty standard on the cameras I've seen.

The FRAC harness has a fused camera power wire that will need to be connected to the power line from your camera. The cool thing about the camera I bought is that the 12V power line is integrated into the video cable sheath so it is routed along the same path as the video from the camera to the Entune space. I used a spade connector to connect the FRAC front cam power wire to the camera power wire. I actually grounded the front camera in the engine bay... See this post

I just checked the ledge area and it is just shy of 2". What is the diameter of your switches? Thats a great idea for switch placement very stealthy.

 

That's plenty of room. The round switch base (below the lip) is ~0.75 inches (19.5 mm); the outside diameter of the lip is ~0.9 inches (22 mm).

I like that ledge location as well. Glad it will work for you. I've got some remote Potentiometers for my EQ and Amp that are going to be mounted there.

 

Under that ledge is indeed a great spot for the two switches.

Hey Tex, Thanks for the link to your audio thread. I got some thinking to do... what will you control with the potentiometers on the amp? Bass?

 

The CRUX VIMTY-05 has been in my list to buy at Amazon. What's the difference between the frac and this unit? If they are similar I'm all for supporting local.

This Crux harness provides VIM bypass, just as the FRAC harness does, but it does not provide the ability for Front/Rear Anytime Cam. The purpose of this Crux product is only to allow external audio/video to be played on your entune system.

 

Got word from AxelsHumanDad that he will not be getting a FRAC harness. So there are two spots open.

For anyone that wants a front camera, you should be getting this FRAC unit!

 

Is there a step by step DIY (every tab/bolt etc ☺) guide to the install for those of us that are weary of removing interior pieces?

 

I may make one when I install mines.

 

I've been thinking about what to put in the instructions. Here is a list of the major tasks you will need to accomplish in order to install a FRAC harness.

1. Buy a harness kit from TundraTex

2. Buy a 12 Volt Front Camera from the supplier of your choice. The camera should provide video on an RCA male plug. The FRAC harness has a female RCA jack for the front camera video input. The FRAC Harness also has a 12V power line for the front camera, so run the power line along with the Video.

3. Buy a set of panel tools

4. Install your Front camera. Pick the installation location and run the video and power lines through the firewall boot (I used the passenger side boot). The 12V power and video lines need to be routed to the Entune Bay behind the radio. The camera ground can be connected anywhere in the engine bay. This thread provides a little info on how I mounted my camera. NOTE: The camera RCA connector may be too big to fit through the firewall boot nipple, so you'll likely need to cut the video cable to route it through the boot, then splice it back together once you're through.

5. Remove the two consoles below the Entune HU. These consoles are tight, but they are just clipped in, so they will pop straight out. The tools you bought in step 3 can be useful here. There are lots of YouTube videos demonstrating this.

6. Place a towel on the dash above the HU.

7. Remove the Entune head unit. You'll need a 10mm socket wrench with an extension. 4 bolts hold the HU in place. When you remove the HU bolts, you can pull the HU straight out and flip it up onto the towel on the dash to get access to the connectors as in this picture.

8. Connect the FRAC harness between the radio and vehicle harnesses - specific instructions will be provided.

9. Remove the Blank switch panels from two locations and snap in the provided panel and switch assemblies. Or if you're like @BlueBottle, cut your own switch mounting holes and install the switches.

10. Route the included FRAC harness switch wires to the switch locations and connect to the switch terminals.

11. Connect the relay ground wire from the FRAC harness to the Side of the Radio bracket. EDIT: This step no longer required.

12. Tidy up the harness with a few tie wraps. Reinstall the HU, the switch panels, and the other console panels and you are done!

I'll have a few more details written up later, but this list should give you a feel for the task.
