The thing that confuses me is the message about the ac in overlap with auto start...

I've driven more brand new cars and trucks than I can count and this is one the few auto/stop systems I like. Activates when you want with a firm brake push, stays off when gently touching the pedal, and can be overridden — though the yellow dash light when disabled is a bit much. Give us a green light when active and no light when off. Plenty of long stops do help save fuel, apparently any stop longer than 7-9 seconds outweighs the fuel used on startup. My A/S was working the other day at -10C (surprisingly) despite the parameters noted above. Yet didn't activate today at -8C.

FYI - If you leave the climate control system mode in Feet + front defrost mode, the auto-start system is disabled and you don't have to worry about the yellow dash light from a manual disable. When stopped and you press on the brake, it will display the Autostart cancel button symbol and then "For Climate Control".

Can anyone tell me how to get into the menu for the start stop? Not the menu that lets you change from standard to extended. I'm talking about the menu were you can change the duration and like 2-3 other settings about the start stop. I got to this menu by accident and I should have taking a picture of it because I can't get back to it now. Someone on here has to know which one I'm referring to.

You can only change to and from extended. There is a stop start information display but you can’t change any settings there.

can you turn it off permanently in tech stream? just disable stop start and not have to push the button every time you get in?

There is another window, I'm sure of it. I was able to get it to pop up twice after pulling into a parking place and putting the car in park. And I didn't release why the engine turned off until I remember the auto off feature so I went and pushed the bottom and a completely different menu popped up with different options. I selected one and ever since I have not been able to produce this menu.

Is it to save fuel and / or lower emissions? It seems like a lot of things going on for a stop light. I would also cringe at the added wear and tear on the starter motor. How does it work with an automatic trans, it kills the motor in drive? I guess i need to read up on these systems, but they seem like a gimmick to me. For now I'll manage without this feature.

My wife's new Ridgeline has the same damn thing, you have to turn it off every time you start it. I want to be able to turn it off and leave it off.

I forget the brand but somebody made a small harness/relay you install behind the dash (wired to the auto stop start OFF button) that forces the truck to remember the setting last used. If you turn it off, it stays off forever until you push again to turn on.

I believe it was only for Ford F150's but maybe they are making more for other trucks? worth a search.

I'm pretty sure that's the reasoning I read to help make the truck more 'efficient"

https://www.autostopeliminator.com/ .. from another thread on this subject. They'd need a truck local from someone in WV to develop a prototype and would pay $300 to use the vehicle for about 8 hours.

Hey gang, my issue is similar, except my auto stop quit working entirely, and a prompt comes up saying "battery charging". Any ideas?

    Lots of stuff!
We only experienced it coming home from the dealership. It has been off ever since. I see a little icon showing that autostart is not on and most of the usage has been while towing so I think it turns off for that as well.

It may be that the truck has been sitting and the battery is a bit low so it won't work if that is the case. There is a button to turn it on and off on the left of the steering column that should get it working again.

My thoughts on that type of system is that it is hard on the starter and battery, but mostly allowing the oil to drain out of the turbos, every time you stop, would be a detriment to their lifespan. I could be wrong on this and Toyota devised a system to protect the turbo bearings?

On my 2022 platinum, I really want to use the auto-engine-stop feature, but it is too inconsistent and "particular" to enjoy.

I've put about 9,000 miles on the truck over six months and found that the stop engine at hard press of the brake rarely works, like....ever.

Either I get one of the following messages:
    "Battery Charging"
    "For Climate Control"
    "Not available"

    OR

Even more annoying is that it does work - for about 20 seconds, sometimes less.

Example: I come to a crawl at a stop light I know will be a 2-3 minute wait, hoping to save a few cents on gas and engine wear-and-tear, I hard-press the brake, and occasionally viola! The engine stops, and I enjoy a brief intermission of gas-sipping down the intake while I stare at the stoplight.

But most of the time, between 10-20 seconds later - VAROOM, it starts right back up.

    What I've tried:
I have made sure my foot stays hard-pressed on the brake
That I press the "Off" button on the climate control
Everything else is off, including the dome light

The longest the engine has ever actually stayed off:
I have a record "off" of around 30 seconds on a few occasions, but to me it's like the feature is half-baked and is likely harder on the vehicle than if it didn't have it at all.

It's almost like ea puff of wind can fault the "pause" of the engine off, and it comes right back on.

    The Kia Telluride reference
Now, a point of reference from my wife's 2020 Telluride.

First, we love the Telluride. I know it's a Kia, but they got it all right with this vehicle. I always tell her if Kia made a truck, I would trade in the Toyota. 100%
The Tellururides auto-off engine feature is more automatic - oh, and eh-hum, hey Toyota (small pun)... it works.

When the vehicle is at a stop for about 1-2 seconds, the engine shuts off, but everything else stays running. It can sustain this sometimes for over 2 minutes.

So compared to my platinum Tundra, the Kia makes Toyota's version of this laughable. And don't even get me started on the "Highway Drive Assist"

I love Toyota trucks, this is my second Tundra - and I even owned the 2020 Tacoma for a while. There are many "other" things I love about the 2022 Tundra.

    Overall
But I'm very disappointed that the engine auto-off doesn't work right. It would have helped if I never saw how the Kia handles it, then I wouldn't know what I was missing.

The Kia battery is smaller with less amp-hour rating, and even though I know the demands of the current draw are likely more on the Tundra, 20 seconds engine-off is a joke.

I think a software update is needed to make the stop/ engine off feature more robust for Tundra owners.

My 10k service is coming up, I plan to speak with the dealer about the issue.

It’s a shit system anyways and is just there so they get the gov credit

just shut it off and drive normal, there isn’t much gain if at all anyways and you’ll save wear and tear

All this info must exclude hybrid's. Can't find a button to turn off and turned on defrost and engine cycled off.

I took my 1794 non-hybrid in this last week because I kept seeing the same message. On our 450 mile roadtrip back from buying the truck, I tried to actually trigger the auto/start stop when we'd get a coffee or something in a town. But I kept getting the "Battery Charging" message which seemed odd considering I was doing highway driving for long stretches and figured the battery had plenty of alternator time charging.

The dealer printed out a 6 page booklet with all the IF THEN ELSE logic (I appreciated it because I'm in IT and a developer) and its really complex set of logic to actually trigger the start/stop. As for the battery, after looking at the car the dealer didn't find anything wrong with the battery, alternator, or electrical system. I suppose I've done my due diligence in getting documentation saying we called out an issue for later if necessary. But now that its home and doing city driving, it seems to actually work so IDK.

I can also verify @moonbeam assessment that you can get a TON of messages on the dash related to the IF THEN ELSE case logic. And I also have seen the car start after sitting at one of our long stop lights for over 2 minutes without me taking my foot off the break. In that sense, it does seem like the application of the idea is lacking if you can't really sit at a light for more than a couple of minutes before its needs to turn back on.

The way I drive, I brake harder when stopping then back off a bit once stopped…this causes truck to shut off and turn on immediately, then remain on the rest of the time I’m stopped. The 1 second of off time is not worth it, and it drives me nuts! All the wear and tear without the fuel savings.
