Hey all, just posting for visibility, I’m 192 miles in and the 10th day of ownership of my 2022 Limited and I got the waste gate issue. Posting out of frustration and for visibility; the dealership didn’t even give me a loaner. Lol $57,000 truck:

    Parking brake assist malfunction
    Reduced engine power
Electric “burning” smell on drivers side engine.
    Cruise control unable to engage

First off...Welcome to the Forum! I'm sorry this was your first post.

Secondly...Sucks about your truck. The bigger gut punch is your dealership not giving you a loaner. Especially, if it's going to take 10-30 days to fix your truck. I'm not one to "make a scene" to get my way, but I 100% would not have walked out of the dealership without a loaner or them arranging a rental. That's unacceptable.

Side note: Be sure to add your info to the "Turbocharger Failure Tracker" thread - https://www.tundras.com/threads/2022-gen-3-turbocharger-failure-list.102563/#post-2633530

Bummer. Sorry to hear that happened.

What was your build date? and What's the reason they gave you for not being able to provide a loaner? That's not cool. Did you take it to the original dealership that you purchased from?

Sorry to hear about your truck. Could you clarify, is it a wastegate issue or a parking brake issue or both?

Updating with the same info I added to the issue thread:

    1.) Build date: 1/22/22
    2.) In service date: 2/02/22
3.) Mileage and date of failure: 192 miles on 2/12/22
4.) Description of problem and resolution: Turbo replacement needed after receiving “Reduced Power - Visit Dealer” warning
Parking brake assist malfunction - visit dealer

updated: dealer reset lights and told me “not to floor it” ugh. I was told Toyota is building a new part for a fix and sees no value in replacing a faulty part (currentpart) with another faulty part (new andshiny). I see that logic, but dang.

also I don’t think the code ever calls it waste gate i think it assumed from the engine power issue.

thanks for the sympathy tundra bros!

Interesting. If they're having the part redesigned or if they're going to start sourcing it from a different supplier then I guess that makes sense.

Can I ask what your driving style was before the issue popped up? Were you pushing the truck hard, or least more aggressively than "normal" driving, or were you driving just normally?

There's no right or wrong answer since this issue shouldn't happen either way. I just haven't heard anyone discuss their driving pattern at the time the issue popped up. Like did it happen just after you floored it off the line at a stoplight or did it pop up while you were warming the truck up just sitting in your driveway?

Also...when did it occur? Just after startup (engine still warming up) or were you 30 miles into a long commute with the truck at normal operating temp?

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.

That would make me want to tell them “just keep it.” Got any N/A v8s left in stock?

you could try to contact toyota corporate about the loaner esp if it's causing a hardship for you. a lot of dealerships are offering them but it may be by dealer discretion.

Welp, I’d say a hobby of mine is reading manuals, and so I took note of what to do and what no to do while breaking in the car during the first 2000 miles, according to the 730 pager. I was on the highway when the alert came on, and there is a possibility I had to move out of a blind spot and accelerated, but it was also rainy and, from driving on Texas roads that can get slick upon light rain, I tend to drive more “normal” to cautious. Also, the app has a “driver score” that for some reason really grabs my competitive attention, so I try to limit the conditions that can affect that score negatively. So, I guess all I have is my word but I’d say I drive less erratic than the average driver(?)

I've babied mine as well, followed the break-in guidelines in the manual. I'm about 200 miles shy of my 5,000 mile maintenance interval. Actually, this weekend was the first time I ever put into "Sport" mode just to see the acceleration difference. Mine was a November build date and I took delivery of mine on Dec 15th.

I was just curious if there was any type of "trigger event." Like if it happened during hard acceleration or something. All that means is that it would be something to watch out for and see if others could test/replicate it. I've seen videos on YT from a couple of aftermarket exhaust companies where they're banging the engine off the line by flooring it so they can showcase the exhaust note on camera. Every time I see one of those videos, all I can think is, "Well, I guess they don't have the wastegate issue because that gate valve would be slapping open & shut at full force."

My dealership also said they wont give a loaner but I could rent one. I laughed and said no thanks. As someone was about to pic me up a employee said “your warranty should cover some rental days. If you like I could get that set up for you?” Forget it I have a second ride.

Toyota is making me not want to get a Tundra.

Clearly this turbo is an ongoing issue. Toyota should have been transparent from the start.

From my short time on this forum, I have seen that the Tundra fans clearly love their V8s. They also clearly had misgivings about the Tundra going turbo.

Now they are being proven right on a daily basis.

5.7 cam shafts were breaking on new trucks in 2007. issues happen with first year production.. thats why i tell everyone avoid first years. especially ones with this drastic of a change

they'll make it right. just sucks.

Yep, the problem is exacerbated by supply issues. Not only are the trucks experiencing failures of critical components, but the lead times for parts are excessive. Toyota is also choosing to build trucks with parts they have rather than allocate those parts to fixing trucks already paid for and in service.

So in the end, the broken trucks are staying broken and new owners are taking it in the shorts if their new Tundra is affected by the turbocharger failure issue.

The supply issues are getting bad. I can’t even get factory air filters for the 18+ Camrys right now at work. 16k backordered last we checked. Lots of parts on back order that normally wouldn’t be

A loaner would be a must in my contract or it would be a no-go for me. My 2 local dealers have always offered a free loaner (even for maintenance, other than basic oil change)

These massages came up twice the first at 88 miles went to dealer it seems when truck gets turned off the message reduced engine power disappeared. I was told they were able to read codes but were unable to replicate the error , after 4 days the truck was returned to me. I was told if the message returns come back with the code showing.
5 days later under 500 miles the
seconded message came and the check engine light was illuminating . This time even with truck turned off and restarted the message and check engine remained. Another 5 days later today I was told Toyota said until the dealer is able to replicates the codes there is nothing that nothing that can be done and come pick up the truck. I was stunned I call some Toyota number and spoke to and advocate clearly there is a waste gate problem has anyone else had this issue with a Toyota dealer.
I told the advocate I wait for brake malfunction or a loss of engine power as the messages are displaying. I was told they would look into and get back to me in a few days

I purchased this truck January 26 and actually drove for a total of 7 day and the reduction in engine power error appeared twice and brake and check engine light came on once. I will keep post on what advocate. But I would be reluctant to let my wife or daughter dive this truck.

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear you’re having issues already. I can say I can empathize with you. I had an issue with my truck that was electrical related and it was in the dealership twice. The second time was like two weeks. They tried the we don’t loan out vehicle garbage and I knew better.

there’s some ammunition for you, which got me a 22 Hybrid Sienna. Also keep in mind there are laws in place, at least in Texas, that protect us. I’m not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. Read this for more help
    https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/consumer-protection/lemon-law

There’s more on this subject but I can’t remember where in the Texas Law they are. One of stated how they have to cover ALL cost associated with the repair. I’ll keep looking and post it. Good luck. By the way if you contact Toyota directly, they’re super helpful as well.

I just cannot believe the dealer said there in nothing they can do until they replicate the codes, twice I have returned with codes once with 88 miles and now with under 500 miles . The dealer advertises a 30 day 1000 mile no questions return policy, I might be using. I reached out to Toyota but I am not feeling to confident

I remember when this happened. 20 owners had this issue but not sure how many is was finalized to be. Heard 40-50…but that’s all hearsay. You might be able to find out more working for Toyota….

I have faith that Toyota will fix the issue satisfactorily (easy for me to say when I don’t have a 2022 and it isn’t my truck having issues). That said, the dealer not giving you a loaner would have been a deal breaker for me. Toyota corporate would be given the chance to rectify this but if not a call to the BBB would be in order and I would leave a less than stellar review online. You’ll be surprised how that gets the attention of the dealerships. They expect you to pay your monthly payment while they have your truck, keep it because it’s a safety issue with no timetable for repair completion and NOT give you a loaner / rental? That’s a non-starter for me as the tundra is my daily driver……good luck and this sucks

Wow. That’s terrible and this thing is turning into a nightmare for Toyota and the new ‘22 truck owners asking “is my truck going to be one of the ones to fail”? “Can’t let my wife or daughter drive my new truck”????

Toyota needs to get this resolved ASAP and step up and do the right thing for these folks or this won’t end well or anytime soon… Sorry to hear and hope you get some answers!

Unfortunately that kinda data is out of the dealer tech realm. That’s a corporate kinda question
